Soul legend Bobby Womack announced this morning on Facebook that he has successfully undergone surgery for suspected colon cancer. "A tumor was removed last night which turned out to be cancer free," reads the message to his fans.

Womack's doctors believed that he was suffering from colon cancer after the singer was hospitalized for pneumonia earlier this year. News of Womack's illness went public after his friend Bootsy Collins told his fans on Facebook in March.

Womack is about to release a new album, The Bravest Man in the Universe, on June 12th. The disc was co-produced by Gorillaz and Blur mastermind Damon Albarn along with XL label boss Richard Russell. Womack previously worked with Albarn on two tracks on the Gorillaz's 2010 album Plastic Beach, including the hit single "Stylo."
