How Google has got Delhi's Chandni Chowk market online | Firstpost

Over 2,500 businesses in the capital?s iconic Chandni Chowk market are now online with their own websites as part of an initiative by Google, called ?India Get Your Business Online? which was?launched in November 2011.

Under the scheme, Google offers free websites and domains to small and medium businesses (SMBs) in the country. After a year, they need to pay just the website hosting charges. Google runs similar initiatives in other parts of the world as well.

The Chandni Chowk Market: Reuters

?With over 137 million Internet users in the country, an increasing number of users are now looking for local information online,? Google India VP and Managing Director (Sales and Operations) Rajan Anandan said at an event on Saturday night.

An initiative like this helps SMBs get started on the Internet, he added.

?There are 47 million SMBs in the country, but only 400,000 have a web presence. Of this, only 100,000 have a decent quality web presence,? Anandan said.

As part of the project, Google India and HostGator went to each shop in Chandni Chowk and built over 2,500 free websites for businesses operating from the market. In addition to creating these websites, Google India has also launched a common website ?www.chandnichowknowonline.in? to provide a directory of businesses from Chandni Chowk.

Communications and IT Minister Kapil Sibal, who is also a Member of Parliament from the Chandni Chowk constituency, said the move will help shop owners increase their business as information about them would be more widely available.

?Internet is becoming an engine of economic growth and is expected to contribute over USD 100 billion by 2015 to India?s GDP. Embracing Internet will increase competitiveness of these businesses in the global economy,? Sibal said.

Google aims to build over 500,000 free websites for SMBs in the country by 2014. ?We have created over 150,000 websites across 7,850 cities in India within a year. Next year, we expect to cover 300,000 businesses and by 2014-end, we will meet the target of 500,000,? Anandan said.

He added the company is looking at some other major business hubs to take more small businesses online but did not disclose any details.

?This initiative from Google has provided all businesses with a professional website, which will now make it easier for customers to find us online and help us to grow our businesses,? Kinari Bazaar Gota Zari Association of Chandni Chowk spokesperson Pradeep Jain said.

With Chavez stricken, elections become crucial

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) ? Hugo Chavez's cancer has upended politics in Venezuela, transforming Sunday's nationwide elections for state governors and legislators into a test of his legacy that could chart the country's future in the uncertain months ahead.

For the first time in his nearly 14 years in power, the charismatic, voluble Venezuelan president has been unable to actively participate in such a campaign.

The question now hovering over the vote: Will his illness help or hurt the ruling apparatus he has built almost singlehandedly and strengthen his leftist agenda?

If Chavez's camp can maintain dominance in the country's 23 governorships, all but eight of which it holds, it can forge ahead with plans to solidify his "socialist revolution" by fortifying grass-roots citizen councils that are directly funded by the central government.

Chavez's backers have framed the election as a referendum on his legacy, angling for the sympathy vote.

For the opposition, the elections are apt to determine the fate of its leadership. The most pivotal race involves Henrique Capriles, who gave Chavez his stiffest challenge yet in the Oct. 7 presidential election by winning 44 percent of the votes.

If Capriles, 40, can win re-election as governor of Miranda state, which includes parts of the capital, the grandson of a Polish Holocaust survivor would be the opposition's most likely choice in the event of a presidential election that would need to be called within 30 days if Chavez died. Even before Chavez's mortality became a factor, the Miranda race was considered crucial for the opposition with Capriles facing Elias Jaua, Chavez's former vice president.

Chavez has virtually monopolized power in his person, painting much of the country red, the color of his leftist movement, as he nationalized key industries and expropriated private land.

The man he designated to succeed him before flying to Cuba last Sunday for cancer surgery, Vice President Nicolas Maduro, is a political lightweight by comparison. Capriles is widely seen as having a far better chance against Maduro than against Chavez.

Another key race is in Zulia state, Venezuela's most populous, where opposition Gov. Pablo Perez is running for re-election.

David Smilde, a University of Georgia sociologist and analyst for the Washington Office on Latin America think tank, believes Capriles will hold on to Miranda's governorship. But he expects an unusually high turnout Sunday that he believes will favor the Chavistas, even among voters fed up with high-level corruption in the president's inner circle.

Many Chavistas have been moved by the president's plight, and some pro-Chavez candidates have been calling for people to vote for them in a show of support and solidarity.

"It is now about Chavez and his legacy," said Smilde. "And there is a lot of sympathy."

Smilde said the woman who cleans his Caracas apartment complains about Chavez but, after news suggesting his cancer was incurable, "she was talking to me with her eyes moist about Chavez and how she's going to vote for Elias Jaua, and that kind of surprised me and I tend to think it's not isolated."

Gladys Espinal, who recently completed studies at the free, state-run Bolivarian University to be a schoolteacher, was also voting for Jaua.

"The (electoral) map is going to be filled with red because that's the best gift we can give our president," she said in a downtown Caracas bakery.

Chavez's health has become such a factor in the vote that pocketbook issues like growing public debt and a scarcity of dollars that's pushing up the prices of foreign goods are falling to the side.

In the past, the opposition has fared better in regional elections than in presidential votes because it could hone in on nuts-and-bolts issues such as the plethora of unfinished public works projects under Chavez or citizen insecurity.

Smilde noted the big popularity boost that followed Chavez's re-election to another six-year term: 68 percent approval in an early November poll by the Datanalisis firm.

And that's before he announced he would need a fourth surgery for a cancer first diagnosed in mid-2011.

Candidates of the governing Unity Socialist Party of Venezuela have campaigned on strengthening communes, which are grass-roots citizen councils that receive their funding directly from the central government.

It's a mechanism that has allowed Chavez to bypass state and municipal control and build loyalty, or dependency, opponents say, among the working poor through government goods and services they never had before. Free health care, subsidized food and access to free education have proliferated under the system.

If the Chavistas gain or even hold steady Sunday, the executive branch could strengthen its hold on the grass roots, as communal councils decide, often based on loyalty, such questions as who gets a new roof, or who receives vocational training, distributing the funds directly.

"The idea is a gigantic state that controls everything," said Angel Alvarez, a political scientist at Venezuela's Central University.

Chavez, 58, underwent six hours of surgery in Havana on Tuesday that government officials said involved bleeding, which was stanched, and would mean a difficult recovery.

Analysts say his absence during campaigning could hurt Chavista candidates in Sunday's elections, especially relative newcomers who in the past could count on the president accompanying them on the hustings.

Government officials have been doing their best to compensate.

They have been holding vigils for Chavez all week, hanging banners in tribute and broadcasting elegiac footage on state TV of the former army lieutenant colonel who first gained celebrity by leading a failed 1992 coup.

Capriles complained this week of the government using Chavez's failing health for political leverage, citing Jaua's statement that "people should vote Sunday for the president's recuperation."

"The leadership of a single person is not transferrable," Capriles told reporters.

Smilde, for one, expects whomever the Chavistas choose as their candidate to win any presidential election that would be called if Chavez, who is due to be inaugurated Jan. 10, dies in the next few months.

After that, many analysts believe the country could slide into economic turmoil as a fiscal hangover bites from Chavez's huge social spending last year. By law, presidential elections must be called if Chavez dies in the first four years of his six-year term.

Opposition congressman Julio Borges, who leads the Primero Justicia party, called Sunday's elections "just another piece on the chessboard of a country that is going to suffer very profound changes in the coming months."

He predicted a split electoral map, which he called the beginning of the end of Chavismo as "the president is going to be disappearing from the scene little by little."

In addition to choosing state governors, voters will also be selecting 229 members of state legislative councils.

Francisco Sanchez, a 45-year-old refrigerator salesman, said he hoped the opposition would have an edge Sunday as Chavez's one-man rule ebbs. But he fears divisions within it.

"We must remember that the only thing that unites the opposition parties is their desire to get rid of Chavez," he said.

Helping Others When We Can Barely Help Ourselves In Our Grief

depressionBy Maureen Hunter?-

The pain of our grief is so massive, so huge and so crippling we are struggling to help ourselves in early grief, let alone be able to help anyone else or cope with the demands of looking after our family. It?s as if we?ve been put in a high speed spinner, churned about and then spat out in tatters and tears. Our heart is fractured and we are broken, no longer whole. We are reeling from the devastating impact of our loss and yet we worry about helping our family through and being there for them ? our daughters, our sons, our husbands, and our kin.

As a mother I know what mothers do. We nurture, we care, we carry on and often we?re the backbone of the family. When grief assaults us our backbone crumbles into a pool of pain so deep we feel we?re drowning and yet amidst all that we feel a responsibility to help, to be there, to support our families, to support others. As much as we would want to there is absolutely no way in the midst of early grief that we can be there for them in the way that we were. Our whole world has collapsed leaving us feeling overwhelmed and out of control. Our capacity to function has been crippled. We can?t think straight, can?t sleep well, can?t barely move ? we are consumed by our grief and thoughts of our loved one.

When Stuart died my world imploded and I did too. My body parts were moving, my legs seemed to be working but my mind was dense fog and I was consumed by tears and exhaustion. My family arrived for the memorial service and my daughter asked me to look after my then 18month old granddaughter for a few hours. I couldn?t do it. I didn?t have any reserves within myself to give to my beautiful girl. I was cleaned out, a void, an empty shell.

I was like that for a long time but not forever. Fast forwards eighteen months and I was able to walk with a friend through the very same circumstances of losing his daughter as I had lost my son. I had something to give. In the intervening months I had done a lot to replenish my void ? my heart and my soul. In many ways I was lucky! It was an excruciatingly lonely and painful time but I didn?t have the responsibility of looking after anyone else. I didn?t have to worry about the impact of my grief on my husband ? there was just me.

This may not be the case for many of you. You desperately need a break but you can?t say ?No?. You have young families to care for, grandchildren, and elderly parents ? pressing needs which are there no matter how you feel. There is no stop button, there is no pause. You are on autopilot. You have to do what you have to do. So how do you?

Simplify everything ? get groceries delivered. Buy ready-made meals a couple of times a week. If friends ask how they can help ? think what would make your day to day easier, could they be a part of that in some way.

Structure some routine ? when everything?s totally out of control, carving a structure or routine for ourselves can put a framework back around our lives. It can return to us a sense of control that we?ve lost in our world.

Carve out some space for you ? plan a few hours to yourself, Get someone to babysit, take over your role for a little while. Take that small piece of time for you. Make you as much a priority as anyone else.

Be a friend to you ? nurture yourself wherever you can. Consider supplements, rest when you can, ask for help, take time for you. Give yourself the grace to not be perfect, to stumble and fall through this difficult time.

Grieve ? throughout it all your grief is still there. Let yourself feel and let your pain find its expression. Even if you have to stagger the moments when you do this, don?t hold it and fold it inside of you.

Support ? when the going gets tough it?s so very hard to do it all alone. Find those who can be there for you, who will understand and let you be you. Find those who can support you in a practical as well as an emotional way.

Friend: Adam Lanza's mom was gun enthusiast

Nancy Lanza, in a photo that a relative saved from Facebook.

By Michael Isikoff and Hannah RappleyeNBC News

NEWTOWN, Conn. -- The mother of the suspected Sandy Hook Elementary School gunman, herself slain at the outset of the murderous rampage, was an avid gun enthusiast who liked to take her sons to the shooting range to practice their marksmanship, a friend tells NBC News.

Dan Holmes, a local landscaper and a friend of Nancy Lanza, mother of 20-year-old suspected gunman Adam Lanza, said she also was a collector.

??She had a pretty extensive gun collection,? Holmes said. ?She was a collector, she was pretty proud of that. She always mentioned that she really loved the act of shooting.?

Holmes recalled that she said she was able to ?focus in? while shooting.

Federal officials tell NBC News that Adam Lanza took three weapons with him to the school ? two pistols, a Glock and a Sig Sauer, and a Bushmaster .223-caliber semi-automatic assault-style rifle ? all of which were registered to Nancy Lanza.

It is unclear whether all the guns were used in the attack. At a news briefing on Saturday, Chief Medical Examiner Dr. H. Wayne Carver II, who led the team that autopsied the victims, said, ?All the (injuries) ? I know of were caused by the rifle.?

The Associated Press reported that authorities investigating the school shooting later recovered additional weapons -- a Henry repeating rifle, an Enfield rifle and a shotgun. It was not clear where those weapons were found.

Holmes, Nancy Lanza?s friend, said the 47-year-old single mother also frequently talked about how she was worried about Adam.

Investigators and former classmates of Connecticut school shooter Adam Lanza say he was bright, but extremely shy and remote. NBC's Pete Williams reports.

Related content from NBCNews.com:

She talked about ?how he was an unstable kid,? he said. ?She would talk about that. ?She was very protective of him. I don?t ? think she ever got major help for him. She just tried to handle it on her own. It was something she was definitely disturbed about.?

Meantime, federal agents visited a gun shooting range near Newtown, Conn., in an effort determine if Adam Lanza visited in the months before the attack, which could indicate he was planning or practicing for the bloodbath he carried out early Friday.

Dean Price, director of the Wooster Mountain Shooting Range near Newtown, told NBC News that he was visited by agents from the federal Bureau of Alcohol ,Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives on Friday night and that they searched through his records for any evidence that the younger Lanza had signed in there in 2012. They also checked to see if he had used the name of his older brother, Ryan, Price said.

There was no indication that Adam Lanza had used the shooting range, which requires customers to sign in and show identification prior to using the facility, Price said.

Agents also have been checking local firearms dealers to see if Adam Lanza purchased or attempted to purchase weapons or ammunition prior to the shooting.

Law enforcement officials said members of the public reported they thought they saw Adam Lanza trying to buy a rifle at a Dick?s Sporting Good store in Danbury, but investigators have yet to confirm that. ??

Donaldson & Guin Investigates Hi-Crush Partners, LP

    | Source: Donaldson & Guin, LLC

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Dec. 14, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The law firm of DONALDSON & GUIN, LLC is investigating Hi-Crush Partners, LP ("Hi-Crush") for potential securities law violations following its disclosure that Baker Hughes Incorporated ("Baker Hughes") had repudiated a long-term supply contract with Hi-Crush related to Hi-Crush's production of monocrystalline sand, which is used to enhance recovery rates of hydrocarbons from oil and gas wells.

According to Donaldson & Guin, LLC law partner, Tammy Stokes, "We believe that the contract with Baker Hughes had a material impact on Hi-Crush's business. If the company failed to disclose significant problems with that contract to its investors, those investors may have valuable claims against the company or certain of its officers and directors for violating federal securities laws."

A class action has been filed in federal court in New York on behalf of anyone who bought Hi-Crush securities pursuant or traceable to its Registration Statement and Prospectus issued in connection with its initial public offering on or about August 16, 2012. By law, anyone who bought Hi-Crush securities pursuant or traceable to this IPO has until January 22, 2013 to ask the court to name them the lead plaintiff for the lawsuit. Although an investor does not have to be named a lead plaintiff to participate in a securities class action, the lead plaintiff has more power to control the litigation and the lawyers representing the investors.

Hi-Crush investors who experienced large losses and who are interested in serving as lead plaintiffs for this class action lawsuit are encouraged to contact Tammy Stokes of Donaldson & Guin by email at tstokes@dglawfirm.com or telephone at 205-503-4512 to discuss their legal rights and options.

Engineers develop new energy-efficient computer memory using magnetic materials

Dec. 14, 2012 ? By using electric voltage instead of a flowing electric current, researchers from UCLA's Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science have made major improvements to an ultra-fast, high-capacity class of computer memory known as magnetoresistive random access memory, or MRAM.

The UCLA team's improved memory, which they call MeRAM for magnetoelectric random access memory, has great potential to be used in future memory chips for almost all electronic applications, including smart-phones, tablets, computers and microprocessors, as well as for data storage, like the solid-state disks used in computers and large data centers.

MeRAM's key advantage over existing technologies is that it combines extraordinary low energy with very high density, high-speed reading and writing times, and non-volatility -- the ability to retain data when no power is applied, similar to hard disk drives and flash memory sticks, but MeRAM is much faster.

Currently, magnetic memory is based on a technology called spin-transfer torque (STT), which uses the magnetic property of electrons -- referred to as spin -- in addition to their charge. STT utilizes an electric current to move electrons to write data into the memory.

Yet while STT is superior in many respects to competing memory technologies, its electric current-based write mechanism still requires a certain amount of power, which means that it generates heat when data is written into it. In addition, its memory capacity is limited by how close to each other bits of data can be physically placed, a process which itself is limited by the currents required to write information. The low bit capacity, in turn, translates into a relatively large cost per bit, limiting STT's range of applications.

With MeRAM, the UCLA team has replaced STT's electric current with voltage to write data into the memory. This eliminates the need to move large numbers of electrons through wires and instead uses voltage -- the difference in electrical potential -- to switch the magnetic bits and write information into the memory. This has resulted in computer memory that generates much less heat, making it 10 to 1,000 times more energy-efficient. And the memory can be more than five-times as dense, with more bits of information stored in the same physical area, which also brings down the cost per bit.

The research team was led by principal investigator Kang L. Wang, UCLA's Raytheon Professor of Electrical Engineering, and included lead author Juan G. Alzate, an electrical engineering graduate student, and Pedram Khalili, a research associate in electrical engineering and project manager for the UCLA-DARPA research programs in non-volatile logic.

"The ability to switch nanoscale magnets using voltages is an exciting and fast-growing area of research in magnetism," Khalili said. "This work presents new insights into questions such as how to control the switching direction using voltage pulses, how to ensure that devices will work without needing external magnetic fields, and how to integrate them into high-density memory arrays.

"Once developed into a product," he added, "MeRAM's advantage over competing technologies will not be limited to its lower power dissipation, but equally importantly, it may allow for extremely dense MRAM. This can open up new application areas where low cost and high capacity are the main constraints."

Said Alzate: "The recent announcement of the first commercial chips for STT-RAM also opens the door for MeRAM, since our devices share a very similar set of materials and fabrication processes, maintaining compatibility with the current logic circuit technology of STT-RAM while alleviating the constrains on power and density."

The research was presented Dec. 12 in a paper called "Voltage-Induced Switching of Nanoscale Magnetic Tunnel Junctions" at the 2012 IEEE International Electron Devices Meeting in San Francisco, the semiconductor industry's "pre-eminent forum for reporting technological breakthroughs in the areas of semiconductor and electronic device technology."

MeRAM uses nanoscale structures called voltage-controlled magnet-insulator junctions, which have several layers stacked on top of each other, including two composed of magnetic materials. However, while one layer's magnetic direction is fixed, the other can be manipulated via an electric field. The devices are specially designed to be sensitive to electric fields. When the electric field is applied, it results in voltage -- a difference in electric potential between the two magnetic layers. This voltage accumulates or depletes the electrons at the surface of these layers, writing bits of information into the memory.

"Ultra-low-power spintronic devices such as this one have potential implications beyond the memory industry," Wang said. They can enable new instant-on electronic systems, where memory is integrated with logic and computing, thereby completely eliminating standby power and greatly enhancing their functionality."

The work was supported by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) NV Logic Program. Other authors included researchers from the UCLA Department of Electrical Engineering; UC Irvine's Department of Physics and Astronomy; Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (a Western Digital Company); and Singulus Technologies, of Germany.
