NEW YORK (AP) ? The daughter of a man pushed in front of a subway train and photographed a split-second before his death said Wednesday after a suspect was arrested that it "would have been great" if someone had helped her father up but "what's done is done."

A freelance photographer for the New York Post was waiting for a train Monday afternoon when he said he saw a man approach 58-year-old Ki-Suck Han at the Times Square station, get into an altercation with him and push him into the train's path.

Naeem Davis, 30, was taken into custody for questioning Tuesday after security video showed a man fitting the suspect's description working with street vendors near Rockefeller Center. Police said Davis made statements implicating himself in Han's death.

Davis, who police said was homeless, was arrested on a second-degree murder charge. He was in custody, and it wasn't immediately clear if he had a lawyer. He has several prior arrests in New York and Pennsylvania on mostly minor charges including drug possession.

Han's only child, 20-year-old Ashley, said at a news conference Wednesday that her father was always willing to help someone. But when asked about why no one helped him up, she said: "What's done is done."

"The thought of someone helping him up in a matter of seconds would have been great," she said.

Ashley stood with her mother, Serim Han, inside their Presbyterian church in Queens. The family came to the U.S. from Korea about 25 years ago. They said Han was unemployed and had been looking for work. Their pastor said the family was so upset by a front-page photo of Han in the Post that they had to stay with him for comfort.

"I just wish I had one last chance to tell my dad how much I love him," Ashley Han said.

The Post photo in Tuesday's edition showed Ki-Suck Han with his head turned toward the train, his arms reaching up but unable to climb off the tracks in time.

The photographer, R. Umar Abbasi, told NBC's "Today" show Wednesday that he was trying to alert the motorman to what was going on by flashing his camera.

He said he was shocked that people nearer to the victim didn't try to help in the 22 seconds before the train struck.

"It took me a second to figure out what was happening ... I saw the lights in the distance. My mind was to alert the train," Abbasi said.

"The people who were standing close to him ... they could have moved and grabbed him and pulled him up. No one made an effort," he added.

In a written account Abbasi gave the Post, he said a crowd took videos and snapped photos on their cellphones after Han was pulled, limp, onto the platform. He said he shoved them back as a doctor and another man tried to resuscitate the victim, but Han died in front of them.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said Han, "if I understand it, tried to break up a fight or something and paid for it with his life."

The suspect's last known address was in a working-class neighborhood in Queens. The only neighbor who even vaguely remembered Davis was Charles Dawes, 80, who stays with his son two doors down.

Davis "came and went, came and went, and he always looked serious," Dawes said. "But I haven't seen him for three or four months."

Subway pushes are feared but fairly unusual. Among the more high-profile cases was the January 1999 death of Kendra Webdale, who was shoved to her death by a former mental patient.

Straphangers on Wednesday said that they were shocked by Han's death but that it's always a silent fear for many of the more than 5.2 million commuters who ride the subway on an average weekday.

"Stuff like that you don't really think about every day. You know it could happen. So when it does happen it's scary but then what it all comes down to is you have to protect yourself," said Aliyah Syphrett, 23, who sat on a bench as she waited at Pennsylvania Station in Manhattan.

Diana Henry, 79, a Long Island resident, was waiting for a train at 34th Street. She stood as far from the platform as possible ? about a dozen feet back, leaning against the wall.

"I'm always careful, but I'm even more careful after what happened," she said. "I stand back because there are so many crazies in this city that you never know."

Oops! 18th-century French chateau razed 'by mistake'

PARIS (AP) ? Residents of a sleepy French village in Bordeaux have been left dumbfounded after discovering their local 18th-century chateau was completely bulldozed "by mistake."

The mayor's office in Yvrac said Wednesday that workers who were hired to renovate the grand 13,000-square-meter (140,000-sqaure-foot) estate in November and raze a small building mixed up them up.

Former own Juliette Marmie says "the Chateau de Bellevue was Yvrac's pride and joy." She adds "the whole village is in shock. How can this construction firm make such as mistake?"

The chateau's current owner Russian businessman Dmitry Stroskin was away and returned home to discover his beloved chateau ? with a grand hall that could seat some 200 people ? was nothing but rubble.

Voyager 1, So Close To Interstellar Space That We Can Taste It!

This is truly a triumph of modern science and unfortunately we do not dream big like this anymore. We are limited to our own backyard. The moon, Mars, etc. Such a shame.

If the "we" in question is NASA, your assertion is true. However, if the "we" denotes the human race, nope, the dream is still on, and there are still people working towards achieving even greater goals. People in Brazil, in Japan, in India, in China are working on projects that may take us (and the "us" here means human race) further.

And you would be wrong as well. The fact is that NASA is still dreaming big. Putting man on the moon for 3 days is NOT that hard. It was that NASA planned it, and CONgress funded it, allowing them to get it done.
Now, NASA was striving to go to Mars and the moon in the 90's when the republicans gutted this effort. They made NASA stop work on things like Transhab and VASIMIR. The neo-cons wanted NASA spending to go into a different direction. Clinton opposed it as being short-sighted, but it was part of a deal to drop our deficit.
THis was followed with more gutting the ISS, post Columbia, but oddly, the most important piece of the ISS, the centrifuge, was gutted. This would tell us how to survive on the moon and mars. And yet, the neo-cons gutted this on item. Just amazing.
Then it was decided to kill off the shuttle (good, since it was costing too much money), and push for Constellation. However, again, CONgress, basically neo-cons, underfunded it so badly that the program was DOA. Thankfully, the 90's plan that NASA hatched to get private space going was funded for cargo only.
Now, Obama comes on and backs pushing private space, while killing off Constellation (it was dead anyways and just rotting). Yet, the neo-cons have worked their tails off to kill it and any attempt to leave the planet. They tried to kill the 1-2B for funding CCDev claiming a waste of money, while pushing the SLS for 20B telling NASA which contractors they would use. In particular, it was all of the contractors that were in CONgress critter's districts.
The neo-cons are STILL striving to kill off private space. In particular, NASA wants to fund PRIVATE fuel depot and various tugs for service. Some would be chemical, but others would be electrical (great for cargo). In addition, they want to get private space stations going, esp. Bigelow. These companies would then work together to put man on the moon and mars. NASA would simply lead the way, doing the hard R&D, while allowing private space to do the things that NASA has already R&D. With this approach, we will be on the moon by 2020, IFF the neo-cons are not allowed to gut NASA again.

NASA is dreaming big. It is one political party that is far more interested in keeping itself alive rather than worrying about our nation's future that is the problem.

There are plenty of various brand names, designs and designs it can be next to impossible to decide on what?s best for you and your loved ones. This article will provide you with info on what to expect, where you can go and what to buy. Whether or not you?re looking for a fundamental device or one with the latest technology has to offer, the next info will probably be advantageous to you and will help you choose the physical exercise gear that?s best for you.

Discover Out Everything You need To Know About Fitness Gear. Do you Need It? Or Are you Better Off Investing Into A Health and fitness Trainer?

The health and fitness equipment industry is growing these days. And because of this manufacturing companies cannot satisfy the growing fitness consumer demands. To help deal with this situation, used health and fitness gear has become a realistic option for numerous home health and fitness enthusiasts.

Once you initiate a health and fitness training program, a bodybuilding program or any other training regimen to amplify your well being and physical health and fitness, you have the option of registering inside a local fitness center or gym, or setting up your house fitness center. Home fitness gear are currently very popular due to their convenience and simple acquisition. It?s in this acquisition process of house fitness center equipment that the concept of life fitness gear accrues.

USA Fitness Shop

With the greatest brand names of the most enticing fitness machines offering the latest models with bells & whistles, some people may balk because of cost considerations. In truth, however, home health and fitness enthusiasts require not spend a fortune to get the best equipment. Scouting around for exercise gear falling in the reasonable price range will reveal many interesting options.

The benefits of cardiovascular exercise cannot be overstated. By performing cardio physical exercise on a regular basis, your body gains stamina and endurance and becomes much more efficient at burning calories. Another benefit is a much more efficient metabolism and a strengthening of the immune system. Cardiovascular physical exercise can also reduce stress and improve self-esteem.

For time savings and convenience, there is simply nothing better than having house fitness gear, so that you can get the exercise done and have no excuses for skipping it.The good news is that house health and fitness gear is no longer a luxury that only the rich can afford to have at the ready.

http://www.usafitnessshop.com/

Buying home health and fitness equipment may be challenging and costly, so knowing what you are trying to accomplish with your health and fitness goals is critical before you make a purchase. Keep in mind what you need the fitness gear to do, so you purchase the machines or devices that will help you reach your goals. Weight loss will require each cardio and strength training, toning will require strength as well as limited cardio, and muscle development or body building will require specific, increasingly challenging weight designed to work particular muscles from the body. Using the incorrect type of house health and fitness gear in your exercise will only lead to frustration and disappointment in your results.

If the amount of accessible space at your disposal is restricted, don?t despair. Numerous popular types of house gym gear have the ability to fold up into a much smaller size for storage, but consider if it will dampen your motivation if you have to drag out heavy exercise equipment each and every time you want to work out.

Old and used fitness equipment that has been used for two to three years is now bought by large fitness companies with $500 trade-in type programs. What they do is simply dump or actually bury this used gym equipment so they won?t impact the sales of new fitness machines sales. The biggest workout gear manufacturers are beginning to see all the benefits of various trade-in programs and using short term lease programs to produce much more new exercise equipment sales.

Purchasing lifetime or life fitness gear means that the equipment you purchase come with a lifetime warranty. That is just about the very best deal accessible in your nearby exercise gear store.

Not only does lifetime health and fitness equipment make sense if you plan to use the gear for a long time, it makes sense because the companies that provide this type of warranty usually make a high quality product. Think about it, the companies that make inferior products will not provide a lifetime guarantee; at most they may offer a 1 year guarantee. The reason for this is that they simply cannot afford to replace or repair all of their inferior products because they will give out, you can almost bet on it. When a company offers lifetime health and fitness gear you realize that it will last a lengthy time, and better yet the company has faith in their product.

The real problem with this approach is that well being clubs or health and fitness gyms will never sell most of their two to three year old workout machines for just five hundred dollars. That?s because all this commercial health and fitness equipment is built sturdy enough to have almost an eight to ten years lifespan. So, they simply won?t trade-in their three-year old used machines unless the offered price is high enough.

Second, you?re able to use your personal gear without any problems. You are not limited to the amount of time you spend using the gear because someone else is waiting in line, as often occurs at a fitness center center. You?re free to use it for whatever amount of time you select to spend.

How often you train will determine the quality and expense from the equipment that will match your level of vigor. In the event you see your self working out just once inside a blue moon, then cheaply priced or second hand equipment might suit your requirements to the letter. On the other hand, if you are a gym-junkie type, it will spend to dish out a few more dollars for a much more reliable piece of kit that can match your level of self-punishment.

Letten admits former top prosecutor posted online as 'eweman ...

Settling a question he has refused to answer publicly, U.S. Attorney Jim Letten has admitted in a court filing that his former second-in-command, Jan Mann, wrote caustic online commentary under the pen name "eweman." Letten's reign as the nation's longest-serving United States Attorney appears in peril over an online posting?scandal that has dragged on for much of the year.

He had earlier admitted that Mann posted online commentary at NOLA.com, but did not say which alias she used. But in a two-page letter to U.S. District Judge Hayden Head dated Nov. 20, Letten admits that Mann is "eweman."

Head has presided over the case against former Jefferson Parish President Aaron Broussard and others in the parish corruption scandal.

In June, before Broussard pleaded guilty,?Head ordered Letten's office to submit details into its investigation of online postings on NOLA.com, under pseudonyms revealed to be those of federal prosecutor Sal Perricone, who resigned over the flap.

The response to the judge's order came from Mann. Afterward, Head denied a motion to recuse Letten's office in the case, relying on Mann's account.

In his letter to the judge, arguing against any change in Head's ruling, Letten noted one alleged passage in which "eweman" answered online criticism on NOLA.com that federal prosecutors were going too light on Broussard and others in the case.

"Haven't you been paying attention?" wrote "eweman" a year ago. "You take the king down for anything you got him on. Al Capone went to jail for taxes, remember?"

Letten then goes on to say: "AUSA Mann posted on nola.com under the name 'eweman.'" As a result, Letten wrote, Mann was immediately demoted.

Letten's letter is dated a day after he announced he had demoted Mann.

A week earlier, River Birch landfill magnate Fred Heebe -- himself a former hopeful for the top federal prosecutor job in New Orleans -- filed a defamation lawsuit claiming Mann was "eweman."

Before then, Letten had repeatedly stated that neither he nor Mann knew anything about Perricone's online ramblings.

Last week, a different federal judge, U.S. District Judge Kurt Engelhardt, scoffed at that idea and suggested that?both Mann and Perricone could be subject to criminal prosecution for their rantings.

Engelhardt had conducted his own probe of misconduct in Letten's office, which included testimony last month from a former federal prosecutor, Mike Magner, claiming he told top brass in Letten's office that he suspected Perricone was?spraying vitriol on NOLA.com.

The idea that others, including Mann, either participated in or knew about the online razzing, and apparently said nothing, has wobbled Letten's?reputation and shaken the confidence of some of his biggest supporters.

Letten has declined to comment, citing an ongoing investigation by the Department of Justice's Office of Professional Responsibility.

Engelhardt last week suggested that the internal investigation was folly and "strongly" urged Letten to appoint a special counsel to investigate. In an editorial on Sunday, the New York Times editorial board?backed that idea.

Healing Canine Arthritis with?Platelets? - Pet Health Care Gazette

Seeing an older pet struggle to climb stairs or hearing your canine friend cry out in pain is a heart-wrenching experience for any pet lover. Finding relief for painful pups is often a challenge. But, a new therapy that comes from your pet?s own blood is showing some promise and giving owners, and veterinarians, hope!

Pet owners don?t want to see their beloved animals in any sort of discomfort, especially if the pain is something the owner can relate to. Degenerative joint disease, better known as arthritis, affects more than 50 million people in the United States and veterinarians estimate that about 15 million dogs also suffer from this disease.

In an attempt to provide relief for their four legged friends, owners will turn to a variety of treatment options. Non-steroidal drugs, acupuncture, stem cell therapy or even different types of lasers are all current alternatives in a veterinarian?s arsenal to help these pets.

In recent years, a new type of treatment that has been borrowed from human sports medicine has increased in popularity. Several high profile athletes, like Tiger Woods and Troy Polamalu, have received remedies consisting of blood concentrates with high levels of platelets. Also seen in equine athletes, the use of platelet rich plasma could show promise for treating injuries and arthritis in dogs. Proponents quickly point out that this type of therapy is completely natural, since the only ?treatment? comes from the animal?s own body (also known as autologous). Critics of this type of treatment say that the theory is certainly sound, but good scientific evidence is not here yet.

So, how can ?Platelet Therapy? possibly help an arthritic pet?

Most people understand platelets are cells that help blood clot after injury. However, platelets are also important in injury repair, providing a wide variety of growth factors that attract specialized cells to help fix the problem. The theory behind platelet rich plasma is that the increased concentration of these essential growth factors helps speed the healing process.

For both dogs and horses, a small sample of blood is taken from the animal and then placed into a specialized filter that helps concentrate the number of platelets. Once the filtration is complete, this new platelet enriched plasma can be injected back into the affected joint of the pet. It?s really that simple!

New, ?point of care? devices are now available, meaning veterinarians do not need any specialized equipment for this therapy. In fact, the whole procedure can be completed in about 15 minutes in the veterinary hospital, in the pet?s home or even at the horse?s barn.

Testimonials from pet owners seem to substantiate the success of these treatments. Many people describe how their pets have demonstrable beneficial changes in range of motion and overall movement and even an improved quality of life. Other owners express happiness with the ?natural? quality of the treatment and the lack of known side effects.

Veterinarians are providing positive feedback as well. Using highly sophisticated scales to rate lameness, veterinarians report better mobility and even less pain in their patients receiving platelet rich plasma.

But not everyone is convinced that this treatment will be the answer to arthritis or other musculo-skeletal injuries. Reviews of the literature detailing studies in human medicine have all stated that the evidence for the success of these therapies is not conclusive and large scale studies are needed for more substantial proof.

Additionally, the effective dosage of the concentrated platelets, the appropriate timing and number of applications for effective therapy is not known. There is even a question as to which types of tissue responds best to platelet rich plasma.

Thankfully, your veterinarian does have a wide range of treatment modalities that can help provide relief for your pet. Owners can help evaluate the effectiveness of any therapy by keeping a log of the pet?s activity and communicating movement changes, pain or even different attitudes from their pet. Working together, you and your veterinarian could find the best ways to keep your pets and horses as pain free as possible!

BannerPlay: Making Banner Ads As Simple As Google AdWords ...

Successfully advertising on the internet is not an easy feat for small and medium businesses with limited budgets. While Google and Facebook have opened the gates of advertising to small businesses, banner ads are still monopolized by larger businesses with strong buying power. Israeli company BannerPlay is now offering professional banner ads, using a pay-per-click (PPC) business model.

?BannerPlay is basically an end-to-end solution, a system that generates banner ads very simply,? BannerPlay CMO Niv Calderon tells NoCamels. ?Instead of hiring a designer to create the banner, then buy the media and then use some sort of analytic tool to get statistics ? we offer a one-stop-shop solution.?

The company uses a ?Google-like? method, buying?the ad space online and placing the banners created by customers on various web pages. The customer is billed using a pay-per-click method, which means they allocate a certain budget for their campaign, which remains online until the budget runs out.

The company says that customers can make real-time adjustment to their campaign, according to the statistical data BannerPlay offers its users. In addition, customers can create as many banners as they like for each campaign. ?We want to make our banner-creating system as accessible as Google Ads,? says Calderon.

The startup was founded last January by Rafi Ton (CEO) and Yoad Gidron (CTO). According to Calderon, the two were involved in creating banner ads for major brands, and decided to make the popular advertising platform more accessible to smaller clients. Calderon tells NoCamels: ?They said: ?let?s create this for everyone, so that whoever wants a banner ad could have it easily and not spend tens of thousands of dollars on a campaign.??

It?s all about usability

What BannerPlay claims to achieve is quite ambitious. The six-employee Israeli startup wants to rival Google as a prominent tool for affordable, effective online advertising. Calderon tells NoCamels that the company believes its tall order is achievable by simplifying the user interface, so that anyone can create a professional-looking internet campaign. Once generating the banner, the user can decide whether to let BannerPlay choose where to advertise it, or embed it themselves using an embed code.

Although the process is pretty much automated, the company insists that users with special requests, such as limiting target audiences, will have control over where their campaign is displayed.

?Our interface is so simple it?s crazy,? Calderon claims, ?you can design your banner ad within five minutes. We have dozens of ready-made templates and we also offer tailor-made designs for $200.? The company also offers ready-made in-banner game templates, such as wheel of fortune and crossword puzzles, which allow more interactivity with the user.

BannerPlay has some more advanced features, which are designed to increase engagement. ?We allow users to embed YouTube videos, contact forms and Facebook ?likes? in the banners,? says Calderon, ?so that you don?t even necessarily have to set up a landing page for your campaign.?

Creating an advertising ecosystem

Yoad and Rafi sit 300x200 BannerPlay: Making Banner Ads As Simple As Google AdWords

The Founders: Yoad Gidron and Rafi Ton

BannerPlay?s next step is developing a network of designers and game developers, who will be paid whenever their template is utilized. For instance, if an advertiser uses a certain designer?s template, whenever the banner ad is clicked, the designer will get a small share of the revenue. ?A major focus of ours is developing a strong social community of designers and game developers,? says Calderon.

Eventually, the company wants to create a sort of advertising ecosystem that will bring together designers, developers, advertisers and end users. The company?s role in that ecosystem is buying the media, offering the banner-creating platform and advertising the banners online. ?When you advertise with Google, you don?t really know where your ads will appear ? but you trust them. That?s what we want to achieve.?

The BannerPlay dashboard is available for free online. The website currently only operates in English, but Calderon says that they are in the process of translating it to several languages.

Calderon says that BannerPlay?s initial funding comes from local Angel investors, but would not elaborate further. He adds that BannerPlay is currently preparing for an additional financing round.

NASA's Mars rover finds complex chemicals

NASA / JPL-Caltech

NASA's Curiosity rover, shown in this artist's conception, is equipped to analyze chemicals on Mars.

By Alan Boyle

Although NASA's Curiosity rover hasn't yet confirmed the detection of organic compounds on Mars, it's already seeing that the Red Planet's soil contains water and more complex chemicals ? including signs of an intriguing compound called perchlorate.

The first soil sample analysis from Curiosity's Sample Analysis at Mars lab, or SAM, was the leadoff topic today at the American Geophysical Union's fall meeting in San Francisco. The findings were eagerly awaited because of rumors that the Curiosity team was on the verge of announcing major findings?? and although NASA tamped down expectations, the scientists said they were overjoyed with?the first round of analysis.

"We really consider this a terrific milestone," Paul Mahaffy, a NASA researcher who is SAM's lead scientist, said at the AGU briefing.

Mahaffy said in a statement issued by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory that "we have no definitive detection of Martian organics at this point, but we will keep looking in the diverse environments of Gale Crater."

Curiosity landed in Gale Crater on Aug. 5, and since then it's been studying Martian rocks, soil and atmosphere with a suite of 10 scientific instruments. Its two-year, $2.5 billion primary mission is aimed at determining whether conditions in the crater were ever conducive for microbial life.

SAM is a key tool for that mission, because it can cook Martian samples in a mini-oven and then analyze the gases that are given off to identify the compounds contained in the sample. Other instruments ? including the Chemistry and Mineralogy instrument, or CheMin ? were used as well to study the initial soil samples, collected over the past several weeks from a drift of windblown sand and dust called Rocknest.

NASA / JPL-Caltech / MSSS

This Oct. 31 view from Curiosity's Mars Hand Lens Imager, or MAHLI, shows two of the trenches made by the rover's 1.6-inch-wide (4-centimeter-wide) sampling scoop. The dust and sand from a dune known as Rocknest were fed into Curiosity's onboard labs for analysis.

NASA said CheMin found that the composition of the Rocknest samples was similar to that of soil analyzed by other Mars rovers such as Pathfinder, Spirit and Opportunity ? about half common volcanic minerals, and half non-crystalline minerals such as glass. SAM identified other ingredients in much lower concentrations, including water molecules that were apparently bound to the grains of sand and dust. Although the water wouldn't be enough to support any sort of life, the concentration was higher than expected.

SAM also identified a type of perchlorate, a compound that includes oxygen and chlorine. Perchlorate, which was also found by NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander in 2008, is considered a toxic substance and used as an ingredient in rocket fuel on Earth. But scientists say the compound could conceivably serve as an energy source for hardy microbes on Mars. Mahaffy said the particular type of compound detected by Curiosity appeared to be calcium perchlorate, but "we have to study that further."

Reactions with other chemicals in SAM's oven formed chlorinated methane compounds, which geologists consider organic chemicals because they contain carbon. Mahaffy said it was most likely that the chlorine came from a perchlorate-like compound in the soil. However, he said it wasn't yet clear whether the tiny amount of carbon in the compounds came from the Martian soil or was actually brought to Mars from Earth by Curiosity itself.

"We have to be very careful to make sure both the carbon and the chlorine are coming from Mars," he told reporters.

Caltech's John Grotzinger, the project scientist for Curiosity's mission, seconded that view. "We just simply don't know if they're indigenous to Mars or not," he said.

Grotzinger said the team would first have to confirm that the constituents of the organic compounds seen by SAM truly came from Mars. If the presence of organics is confirmed, then the scientists would have to look into whether they are merely part of the "background fall of cosmic material" onto the planet, or arose through chemical processes on Mars itself, he said.

It would take a step-by-step process to confirm the presence of truly Martian organic compounds, and reconstruct how those compounds were formed.?"Then you have ... to decide whether or not those formation pathways are abiotic, or maybe in the end biologic," Grotzinger said. "So you see there's a complicated decision pathway there, and we have to explore each one systematically."

Grotzinger cautioned that there would be no "hallelujah moment" in the search for organic chemicals on Mars.

A couple of weeks ago, he was quoted as saying that the data set from Curiosity would be "one for the history books." That led to speculation that an earth-shaking discovery could be revealed at the AGU meeting. NASA later said Grotzinger was referring to the two-year mission as a whole, rather than any specific findings to be announced in the near term.

Today, Grotzinger said his original comments were misunderstood.

"What I've learned from this is that you have to be careful about what you say, and even more careful about how you say it." he told reporters. "We're doing science at the speed of science [but] we live in a world that's sort of at the pace of Instagrams. The enthusiasm that we had, that I had, that our whole team has about what's going on here ... I think it was just misunderstood."

Update for 3:05 p.m. ET: After discussing this report with my friends in the newsroom as well as on Twitter, I've turned the headline around to emphasize the detection of chlorinated methane compounds, even though the origin of those compounds has not yet been confirmed. Is that going too far the other way?

Oysters eyed as help for polluted New York harbor

They are soft to the touch, but surrounded by a hard rough shell. Known as filter feeders, many as small as your thumb, they use their tiny cilia to draw in plankton, sediment and other particles over their gills and spit out cleaner water.

They dwell where salt water meets fresh water, and survive in a variety of temperatures from the chilly New England coast to the Gulf of Mexico. And they once played a vital role in New York's harbor providing both a vitamin-rich source of food and a means of commerce and trade.

Now, the oyster could have a different role to play - helping clean New York's polluted harbor.

These ecological engineers work round the clock filtering water, says Beth Ravit, an environmental scientist and professor at Rutgers University. One little oyster, or mussel, too, can filter up to 50 gallons of water a day.

"They literally change, physically and chemically, the system it's a part of," Ravit said.

Oysters help get turbidity, or cloudiness, out of the water, thereby allowing sea grass and other plant species to grow. In turn, Ravit said, this puts oxygen into the water, promotes photosynthesis, and creates conditions by which other marine species can survive.

Ravit, who works alongside the New York/New Jersey Baykeepers, an ecology advocate group, has been studying oysters, in the Hudson River Estuary since 2006 and says there are spots of populations along the coast, but otherwise they are close to extinct. Once abundant, this bivalve population dwindled in the past century as a result of heavy industrial activity, such as shipping and dredging, as well as overfishing.

Oyster larvae seek substrate, or a surface area, to which to attach and search for adult oysters. As they begin to pile up, they form reefs that can serve to protect shorelines by providing wave attenuation and offer other marine plant and animal species places to live in the crevices within its rough hewed shell piles.

"They look like the cold water version of a coral reef," Ravit said. "They create a home and a restaurant for other species to live and eat."

In the absence of adult shells, or another suitable surface to which to attach, the larvae die off.

Over the course of her time with The NY/NJ Baykeepers, Ravit has tested 15 locations in the Hudson River Estuary in an effort to jump-start a viable breeding ground for larvae, but with varying levels of success.

"Oysters are sensitive," she said. "They are more susceptible to sedimentation and contamination."

Nevertheless, oyster and mussel restoration projects have gained momentum in the harbor. The New York/New Jersey Baykeepers has approximately 30 different partners and has launched six different pilot projects throughout the harbor since 2010, according the Baykeepers oyster restoration program director Meredith Comi.

In Manhattan, landscape architect and urban designer Kate Orff is also working on plans to re-introduce oysters to the harbor. Orff's vision, which she calls Oyster-tecture, appeared 2010 in the Museum of Modern Art exhibit Rising Currents: Projects for New York's Waterfront. It combines the oyster's ecological benefits with elements of design.

"Oyster-tecture is about re-making and fabricating habitat infrastructure in cities that can serve jointly to increase biodiversity, but also enhance public space," Orff said.

On a recent visit to the downtown urban design firm, Scape/Landscape Architecture P.L.L.C, at which Orff is a principle, she explained her concept as she pointed to colorful renderings on the studio's walls. In one picture, beds of fuzzy rope knitted together create a support structure, one that could hold oysters beds above the siltation layer. The fuzzy rope beds interconnect reef structures made of rock and shell piles.

In another rendering, which Orff titled "The New Gowanus," she points out a series of oyster nurseries called Flupsies, or floating upweller systems; they are eight-chambered boxes giving oysters a place to grow out of sight from predators. Strung together, the flupsies form a series of rafts and public walkways providing people with access to the waterfront.

For Orff and her team, Oyster-tecture remains a futuristic concept intended to be executed on a large scale, but for now they are testing the idea of it in the coming month at a small site. Her team of designers and volunteers plans to launch a pilot project in the Gowanus Canal, a federal superfund site in Brooklyn, by lowering cobweb-like panels of fuzzy rope into the polluted water within an active industrial zone.

"Our plan is to retro-fit a working pier, a pier that is receiving shipments and barged material, with these habitat structures so that we can measure and monitor the rate of mussel growth," Orff said.

For this project, she is using ribbed mussels, a bivalve with similar filter feeding capabilities to oysters, but with a higher tolerance for pollution. She plans to monitor the mussels over the next five years, periodically measuring the biomass and taking water samples every few months.

There are some Brooklyn residents, like 75-year-old Ron Mehlman, who might find Orff's work beneficial.

"I came here 18 years ago when it was almost impossible to walk across the bridge because the smell was so strong," said Mehlman, whose sculpture studio was flooded by the Gowanus during Hurricane Sandy, forcing him to spend the past few weeks cleaning his workspace with bleach and water to mitigate mold and also the smell from the polluted canal.

"People should go back and look at Venice, for instance," he said. "How they're coping with it and how they work their problems out."

Despite the interest in oyster restoration projects, they also have their setbacks. In 2010, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection shut down the New York/New Jersey Baykeepers efforts with two projects, one in the Navesink River and the other in the Raritan Bay, citing concerns about poaching and illegally harvesting oysters from polluted waters and fears that people would, in turn, eat the contaminated oysters.

In 2011, however, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, in partnership with the Navy, granted Ravit and her NY/NJ Baykeeper team members permission to renew oyster restoration efforts at a private pier located at the Naval Weapons Station Earle near Sandy Hook, N.J.

Oysters and mussels aren't the only or final answer to cleaning New York's pollution, and for now, Ravit is focusing on finding the right areas in the harbor for oysters to flourish.

"We have to get to a critical mass where they can create enough offspring to offset the natural mortality the species would have in the wild," she said.

As for Orff, she said rebuilding oyster populations will not only help bring back cleaner water, but will encourage people to re-engage with the waterfront.

"The key lesson to Oyster-tecture is that we can start now with readily available materials," she said. "It's played a role in getting people excited again about the harbor as this new front door, or a new kind of Central Park."
