Honey Boo Boo's uncle reveals he's HIV positive

By The Hollywood Reporter

"Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" co-star Lee Thompson -- aka "Uncle Poodle" -- revealed that he is HIV positive in a recent interview with Atlanta-based gay magazine Fenuxe.

Thompson -- uncle to Alana Thompson (aka "Honey Boo Boo") and brother of her dad, Mike (aka "Sugar Bear") -- told Fenuxe that he took a test in March that came back negative, but two months later, his test was positive.

"I knew it had been my boyfriend who infected me," he said. "I later learned he had been HIV positive and was not taking medication and had not bothered to tell me about it. I was advised that I should press charges and, hesitantly, I did. It was the right thing to do."

His ex is now serving a five-year sentence, said Thompson, who married boyfriend Joshua Yarbroughe in August.

"I would have been cool with his HIV status if he had been honest," he added. "I don?t have an issue with the disease. I would have known how to protect myself."

Thompson's revelation is part of an effort to promote safe sex. He called people who are having unprotected sex "damn fools."

"They are playing Russian roulette; they are playing with their lives and that of their sexual partners," he added.

Thompson also is working to combat bullying in schools, saying he was bullied after coming out while in high school.

Next up, he's hoping to get his own TV show and "highlight what it is like being gay in the South. I think I have a good story to tell."

Turner International to Cut Staff in Europe, Middle East, Africa - The ...

Alexander Tamargo/Getty Images

LONDON -- Time Warner's Turner Broadcasting System International unit said Tuesday that it plans to cut about 30 percent of the staff in its Europe/Middle East/Africa (EMEA) business as part of a restructuring that will give more power to regions and cut back on central functions.

The company's overall EMEA business includes about 900 positions, so about 250-plus positions are expected to be eliminated in the restructuring.
?
Gerhard Zeiler, president of TBS International, unveiled the organizational shake-up. "Some functions, which can be handled externally at the same quality, will be outsourced," the company said. It didn't detail the annual savings from the cuts.

Turner International said it anticipates the 30 percent reduction in positions across the EMEA business to become effective upon completion of a consultation process with staff representatives. "This estimation comprises open headcount, positions that became vacant and are not being reoccupied, redundancies and outsourcing," it said without detailing the likely timing of the moves.
?
The decisions are part of a review process for its EMEA business that Turner International launched in September.

?This review required us taking some tough decisions, but they are absolutely necessary to put Turner International in the best possible position for future growth,? said Zeiler. ?Greater empowerment and broader accountability for local management will lead to simplified processes throughout the organization, improved efficiency and reduced costs.?
?
Turner Broadcasting System International operates more than 100 channels that are versions of core Turner brands, such as CNN, TNT, Cartoon Network and Turner Classic Movies, in more than 30 languages in 200 countries around the world. Turner's EMEA business has 17 branded channels in 27 languages in more than 100 territories.

NYC school bus strike beginning Wednesday, union says

A strike by New York City school bus drivers that had been threatened for weeks will be starting Wednesday morning, affecting 152,000 students, the president of the union representing the drivers announced Monday.

Michael Cordiello of Local 1181 of the Amalgamated Transit Union said more than 8,000 bus drivers and matrons would take part in the strike, brought about by a dispute over job protections in any new bus company contracts for the bus routes. Matrons accompany the children on the bus and make sure they get on and off the bus safely.

Earlier Monday, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the city had been anticipating the strike.

Flanked by Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott and other officials at a news conference, Bloomberg said, "The city is prepared for a strike."

Under the city's strike contingency plans, students would receive free MetroCards for mass transit. Parents or guardians of younger children also would get the cards.

Families of special-needs students would be reimbursed for private transportation.

The city wants to cut transportation costs and has put bus contracts with private bus companies up for bid. The union is decrying the lack of employee protections, saying current drivers could suddenly lose their jobs once their contracts are up in June.

The mayor said the privately-contracted drivers were demanding job security, or Employee Protection Provisions.

However, such a guarantee is not allowed in contracts between drivers and companies chosen by the city to provide bus services. The state Court of Appeals in 2011 barred the city from including EPP because of competitive bidding laws. Hence, the mayor said, the city cannot accept the union demand for an EPP clause.

Drivers' contracts expire on June 30, and Bloomberg said the city must "go ahead" in seeking competitive bids that would save money.

Cordiello refuted the idea that the EPP was not allowed. He said the 2011 Court of Appeals ruling was based on the fact that the city at the time did not offer the judges enough evidence to support its contention that the EPP job-security clause does not push up costs.

The union president also challenged the mayor's assertion that both sides in the labor dispute had been talking "all along."

Not true, Cordiello said. He said he'd met the mayor for only 20 minutes last week, and the deputy mayor for an hour.

The head of another union, Teamsters Local 854, said its members would not go on strike with the bus drivers because their contracts don't allow it, but they would not cross any picket lines. Local 854 represents drivers, matrons and mechanics, some of whom work alongside members of ATU.

Dan Gatto, president of the local, put the blame on Bloomberg. "For weeks now, City Hall has refused to discuss the job-killing provisions they are insisting on as part of new contracts with bus contractors," he said.

"We urge Mayor Bloomberg and his administration to work with the ATU to resolve this dispute before a job action is required," he said.

Cheesecake Factory pasta on annual list of caloric "food porn"

(Reuters) - A Cheesecake Factory pasta dish with 3,120 calories - or more than a day and a half of the recommended caloric intake for an average adult - is among the headliners on this year's Xtreme Eating list of the most unhealthy dishes at U.S. chain restaurants.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest, a consumer-focused nonprofit group that promotes healthier eating, compiles an annual list of "food porn" to alert consumers to menu items with eye-popping levels of calories, saturated fat, sugar and/or sodium.

"You'd think that the size of their profits depended on their increasing the size of your pants," CSPI Executive Director Michael Jacobson said of the industry's Xtreme Eating winners. The list was released on Wednesday.

CSPI for years has used the "awards" to raise awareness and drum up support for calorie disclosure on restaurant menus - something that larger chains soon will be required to do under the U.S. health reform law.

The Cheesecake Factory's Bistro Shrimp Pasta, made with a butter and cream sauce and topped with battered, fried shrimp, also contains a 89 grams of saturated fat and 1,090 milligrams of sodium. CSPI said it confirmed the nutritional data with the companies on the list.

Typical adults are advised to consume no more than 20 grams of saturated fat and 1,500 milligrams of sodium per day.

"It's like eating three orders of Olive Garden's Lasagna Classico plus an order of tiramisu for dinner," CSPI said. Some in the food and beverage industries have dubbed the Washington-based group the "food police".

More than one-third of Americans are obese, and about 10 percent of the nation's healthcare bill is tied to obesity-related diseases, such as Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and hypertension, according to the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development.

The nation's food and beverage industries are under increasing pressure from consumer, health and parents' groups to offer more healthy alternatives.

Restaurant companies say it is their job to give consumers choice. Many, including Cheesecake Factory, have lower calorie sections on their menus alongside their indulgent offerings.

Cheesecake Factory is known for its ample portions and wide array of cheesecakes - many of which weigh in at around 1,000 calories per slice.

It makes regular showings on the Xtreme Eating list, but since August 2011 has promoted its "SkinnyLicious" menu of entrees with 590 or fewer calories, including salmon rolls and a pear and endive salad.

Jayne Hurley, CSPI's senior nutritionist and an author of this year's Xtreme Eating report, said such lower-calorie items should be recategorized as "normal" rather than "diet".

"It's the steady stream of high-calorie foods that sabotage your diet not just for the day, but for the entire week," Hurley said.

California-based Cheesecake Factory did not respond to requests for comment about their winning dishes.

Other Xtreme Eating winners for 2013 include:

--Johnny Rockets' Bacon Cheddar Double Hamburger with 1,770 calories, 50 grams of saturated fat and 2,380 milligrams of sodium. For comparison, three Quarter Pounders with Cheese from McDonald's have 1,570 calories.

--Cheesecake Factory's Crispy Chicken Costoletta with 2,610 calories, 89 grams of saturated fat and 2,720 milligrams of sodium. CSPI said an entire 12-piece bucket of KFC Original Recipe fried chicken has about the same number of calories but less than half the saturated fat.

--Smoothie King's Peanut Power Plus Grape Smoothie, which includes peanut butter, banana, sugar and grape juice. A 40-ounce large size of that drink has 1,460 calories and 22 teaspoons of added sugar plus 29 teaspoons of naturally occurring sugar.

The U.S. government's Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends that women consume no more than six teaspoons of added sugars per day and that men consume no more than nine.

--Chocolate Zuccotto Cake from Maggiano's Little Italy. One slice weighs nearly one pound and has 1,820 calories, 62 grams of saturated fat and 26 teaspoons of added sugar - or 15 Hostess Ho Hos, CSPI said.

Death highlights firefighting risk: union

AAP

A Victorian man who died while fighting bushfires in Tasmania was a firefighter of 30 years' experience who had recently passed a fitness exam.

Peter Ronald Cramer, 61, from Tyers in Victoria's Gippsland region, died on Sunday while assisting backburning operations at Taranna, east of Hobart.

The Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) firefighter had been working on foot to identify potential containment lines on the southern boundary of the Forcett fire about two to three kilometres from the active fire edge.

DSE chief fire officer Alan Goodwin said Mr Cramer had been a DSE firefighter for more than 30 years and a CFA volunteer for more than two decades.

He was a DSE training co-ordinator who also volunteered his time to train CFA volunteers.

"Peter was a well-respected and trusted member of the DSE community," Mr Goodwin told reporters in Melbourne.

"He was a very experienced firefighter.

"He spent a lot of time training and advising a lot of our younger firefighters coming through.

"He knew the bush, and it's a sad loss."

Mr Cramer was one of more than 70 Victorian emergency services workers sent to Tasmania on Thursday to help fight the state's devastating fires, which have destroyed more than 130 homes since January 4.

He was due to return home on Tuesday but was found dead at 5pm (AEDT) on Sunday on a bush track after he failed to make a scheduled call-in.

Mr Goodwin said the cause of death was unknown, and Mr Cramer had recently passed a fitness test.

"Certainly all our firefighters that we send away, all our firefighters go through our fit-for-fire program, through medical testing and so forth, and Peter was certainly part of that," he said.

Hermione Way's Facebook Post About Harry ... - Business Insider

1D Super Humans Facebook

Bravo star Hermione Way found herself in the tabloids after frolicking in a hot tub on Necker Island with Richard Branson and newly single Harry Styles last week.

On Saturday, Bravo 'Start-Ups: Silicon Valley' star Hermione Way wrote a long Facebook post titled "Kiss and don't tell: Why I decided not to sell my 'dirty harry' story to the press."

The post attempts to explain why the reality star and health entrepreneur turned down an alleged $100,000 offer from an entertainment reporter wanting Way to spill details on her now infamous hot tub romp with One Direction boy bander Harry Styles -- just hours after he broke up with Taylor Swift.

"As soon as the first story broke I received emails from more than ten journalists, offering me cash for further details on the story or as it's called in tabloid speak; a kiss and tell," explains Way in the post. "One journalist's hunger for the story meant he hunted me down and sought me out ... He followed my Twitter stream and saw that after the Caribbean I would be in Vegas for CES."

Way goes on to reveal, "The first offer was 50,000 pounds ($80,000). He would make sure I was portrayed in a 'good light' and would help me sell it to subsequent magazines and papers."

Ultimately, Way chose not to "kiss and tell" -- but we suspect there was nothing to tell in the first place.

As Business Insider's trustworthy source previously told us, "nothing really happened between them" and all of the reports are "overblown."

In fact, Styles jumping into the pool with Way was as far as it got, we're told.

But Way wants her nearly 15,000 Facebook subscribers and 22,000 Twitter followers to commend her on her so-called class in handling the press situation following her wild trip to Necker Island.

"Keeping the trust and relationships of the group of people I was with on Necker island meant more to me than making a quick buck out of some poor, broken hearted teenage boy," Way continues. "I had one of the best weeks of my life on Necker with a group of people who are some of Silicon Valley and the technology industry's elite investors, entrepreneurs and technologists. Throughout the week we spent much time hanging out and talking to Richard Branson - he is such an incredible person and I also wanted to keep his trust."

The post has 304 "likes" and 142 comments, ranging from kudos on her class to the hypocrisy of her words:

But perhaps it has nothing to do with class or integrity at all, as Way herself commented on the post:

6 Ways You Can Have a Healthy Relationship with Yourself | World ...

How to Have a Healthy Relationship with YourselfThere?s an assortment of articles about helping us build healthy relationships with our partners and loved ones. But we don?t hear nearly as much about the most important relationship in our lives: the one with ourselves.

As writer and photographer Susannah Conway said, ?Your relationship with yourself is the foundation of everything.?

Having a good relationship with yourself gives you important insights into your life. For instance, years ago, John Duffy worked as an accountant. But he wasn?t happy with his career path. ?I had to look within to determine who I was and what I wanted,? said Duffy, Ph.D, now a clinical psychologist and author of the popular book The Available Parent: Radical Optimism for Raising Teens and Tweens.

?Were I not eager to get to know myself well, I would not have made the career change that allowed for so much possibility and happiness in my life,? he said.

Having a good relationship with yourself improves your relationships with others. Conway compared it to the safety instructions on airplanes: Put on your oxygen mask before putting it on anyone else, even a child.

?I have learned, through experiences in and out of the therapy room, that if we are not connected and emotionally available to ourselves, we cannot be connected and emotionally available for others either,? Duffy said.

So what does a healthy relationship with yourself look like?

?A healthy self-relationship is the ability to value yourself as a person, and embrace your strengths and weaknesses,? said Julie Hanks, LCSW, a therapist and blogger at Psych Central. She?s realized that her strengths and weaknesses are two sides of the same coin. ?I am a passionate and creative person and with those strengths comes the tendency to be disorganized and emotionally overwhelmed,? she said.

?It means simply considering yourself, every day,? Duffy said. That consideration includes self-care, self-respect, goodwill and self-love, he said.

A healthy relationship looks like kindness, said Conway, also an e-course creator and author of This I Know: Notes on Unraveling the Heart. ?We have unconditional love for our family and loved ones ? we need to extend that to ourselves, too,? she said.

Regardless of whether you?re used to extending love and kindness your way, you can build and bolster that healthy bond. These are six ideas on cultivating a good relationship with yourself.

1. Care for your needs.

According to Hanks, ?A great place to start cultivating a healthy relationship with yourself is by caring for your basic physical needs.? That includes getting enough sleep and rest, eating nutrients and exercising.

Conway agreed. She stressed the importance of giving yourself the space to discover and connect to ?what feeds you in mind, body and spirit.?

2. Joy is important.

?Prioritize the activities that bring you joy and fill your emotional reserves,? Hanks said. Conway suggested giving yourself treats every day, such as ?a walk in the park, a small bar of chocolate, a long bath [or] a yoga class.?

3. Focus on your inner world.

According to Hanks, a healthy relationship with yourself also includes being aware of your internal processes. She suggested simply asking yourself these questions on a regular basis: ?What am I feeling? What am I thinking??

Also, consider the why behind your behavior, thoughts and feelings. For instance, Hanks suggested asking: ?I wonder why that?s bothering me? I wonder why I?m feeling more lonely lately??

Journaling and therapy are other vehicles for becoming more self-aware, she said.

Conway teaches several online courses and offers a free workbook, which also help readers tune into their inner lives.

4. Regularly make time for yourself.

For instance, ?Sit quietly for 10 minutes in the morning with your first cup of coffee,? Conway said. ?Find books that speak to your soul and steal moments to dig into them every day,? she said.

5. Meditate.

?I find the most useful method to be the gift, to oneself, of a daily meditation,? Duffy said. ?In those moments between the thoughts, we allow ourselves peace of mind that can carry us through even the most stressful days.? These are several suggestions on meditating:

6. Be your own best friend.

?Any time you hear the negative put-downs swirling around your head, think about what you?d say to your best friend or sister or daughter, and then rewrite the script with love,? Conway said.

Again, cultivating a positive relationship with yourself is the building block for your whole world. As Hanks said, ?It?s crucial to have a great relationship with ourselves because it?s the only relationship that you are guaranteed to have every day of your life!?
