Volatile Spirits: Tasting Wine!!!

I still remember the first day I tasted wine ever. My cousin had taken our gang out, and red wine was ordered. I remember wincing at the first sip... but there was something in that sour taste blended with a quaint sweet flavour. I not only finished that glass, but although I am an essentially non alcoholic person, I would love to have a glass or two of wine occassionally. Oops, that's a secret let out!!!

So, when my blogger-and-more buddy, Sushmita?invited me for a Wine Tasting?event organised by ?Four Seasons, I readily agreed ignoring the fact that it was on a Thursday afternoon. The venue was near my office, Fresco Restaurant in Connaught Place, which is famous for exotic Italian food. I was joined by seven fellow bloggers, (left to right in the picture): Rituparna, Pratik, Purba, Deeba, Sushmita, Sangeeta and Rekha.

The bright face you see behind our group is Shamita Singha, Miss Earth Universe. She came across as the girl next door and told us about wines, about Four Seasons and interacted with us freely. Never for once, did she sound like a celebrity. But she sure knew a lot about wines!

I mean, I have consumed wine on various occasions at different restaurants in a?number of cities, and used to think myself as?quite a? connoisseur. But never had I bothered to think how wine was made, where it got its colour from, etc. Shamita told us all this, and gave us ideas about pairing different types of?wine with the type of cuisine. Yes, dont be surprised if I serve you wine with Baingan-ka-bharta (Roasted brinjal, a delicacy from the Indian cuisine)?now!?We tasted five types of wines over enthralling converstation, and were quite tipsy and gay by the end of the session. All of them were great!!! Two smart representatives from Four Seasons, Jyoti and a handsome young man (sorry, I forgot to ask his name) kept us company enthusiastically over the food and drinks.

We were gifted a complimentary bottle of wine for our friends and family. So come over, if you want to share my newly gained knowledge and taste the wine.

Some of my friends have also blogged about the event, and their posts are far more colourful, informative?and exciting!! Read them here, while I leave you a teaser with the snaps above:

(AP) ? Flames forced thousands of Colorado residents from their homes over the weekend and disrupted vacation plans for countless visitors as smoke shrouded some of the state's top tourist destinations, including majestic Pike's Peak and tranquil Estes Park.

Colorado is having its worst wildfire season in a decade, with more than a half dozen forest fires burning across the state's parched terrain. Some hotels and campgrounds are emptying ahead of the busy Fourth of July holiday.

One of the newest fires, a blaze near Colorado Springs, grew to more than 6 square miles Sunday after erupting just a day earlier and prompting evacuation orders for 11,000 residents and an unknown number of tourists.

The fire sent plumes of gray and white smoke over the area that obscured at times Pikes Peak, the most-summited high-elevation mountain in the nation and inspiration for the song "America The Beautiful."

Winds had started to push smoke away from Colorado Springs and evacuations orders were lifted for the 5,000 residents of nearby Manitou Springs, but area residents and tourists still watched nervously as haze wrapped around the peak.

"We're used to flooding and tornadoes, nothing like this," said Amanda Rice, who recently moved to the area from Rock Falls, Ill. Rice, her husband, four children and dog. They left a Manitou Springs hotel late Saturday.

Rice, scared when she saw flames, took her family to the evacuation center before she was told to go.

"It was just this God-awful orange glow. It was surreal. It honestly looked like hell was opening up," Rice said Sunday.

Even while other large fires burn across the West, Colorado's blazes have demanded half the nation's firefighting fleet, according to Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper. He said C-130 military transport planes from Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs would begin assisting Monday.

"People recognize this is going to take a big push" to extinguish, Hickenlooper said Sunday from a Colorado Springs grocery store, where volunteers were passing out burritos, sandwiches and drinks to 350 firefighters working near Pikes Peak.

A statewide ban on open campfires and private fireworks has been in place for more than a week.

While no homes were reported damaged in the Colorado Springs-area fire, a forest fire near Rocky Mountain National Park destroyed structures near the mountain community of Estes Park. The Larimer County Sheriff's Office said Sunday that 22 homes and two outbuildings had been burned.

The Estes Park fire destroyed vacation cabins and closed the most commonly used entrance to the park. Clouds of smoke blew toward the 102-year-old Stanley Hotel that inspired Stephen King to write "The Shining."

Also over the weekend, residents of a subdivision near the northern Colorado city of Fort Collins learned that 57 more homes in their neighborhood had been lost to the High Park Fire, which already had claimed 191 homes, authorities said.

The High Park Fire is the second-largest wildfire and among the most expensive in Colorado's history. It has scorched more than 130 square miles and was just 45 percent contained on Sunday, The Denver Post reported.

With Colorado midway through its worst wildfire season in a decade, travelers have seen some of their favorite sites closed to the public, obscured by smoke and haze. Some travelers were awoken with evacuation orders.

Families planning whitewater rafting trips or visits to the stunning red-rock formations in Garden of the Gods park in Colorado Springs were instead spending their vacations passing out bottled water and setting up cots in evacuee centers.

They included Mark Stein, of Morristown, N.J., whose family arrived after midnight Sunday at their Manitou Springs hotel for a week of whitewater rafting and sightseeing.

"We were sleeping for 15 minutes when they started knocking on the door ? a day from hell," Stein said of the day of travel. With his wife and two sons, Stein spent the first night of his vacation setting up cots for more than 200 evacuees who slept at the school.

"I think it's the best vacation ever. This is what the real world is about. There's a lot of people that need help," Stein said.

Also Sunday, a brushfire that began near Elbert, about 50 miles southwest of Denver, quickly spread to about 60 acres, forcing the evacuation of about 100 residents.

Elsewhere, firefighters contended with windy and heat as they battled wildfires in Utah, New Mexico, Arizona and California.

? In Utah, a 15-square-mile blaze around Fountain Green in Sanpete County was threatening more than 359 permanent structures and 213 mobile homes and travel trailers in four rural subdivisions, forcing about 1,000 people to flee. BLM says the human-caused fire erupted Saturday afternoon. Officials report progress on a 9-square-mile wildfire around Saratoga Springs, about 40 miles south of Salt Lake City.

? In Montana, two wildfires were burning in the southwest part of the state, including the fast-moving Antelope Fire, which started Saturday afternoon about 10 miles north of Whitehall and had grown to 462 acres on Sunday. About 100 firefighters were battling that blaze.

? In Arizona, the U.S. Forest Service said late Sunday that containment against the Poco Fire, just outside of Young, is up to 65 percent and remains under 12,000 acres. Officials say many of the firefighting resources are being released to their home units or to other fire assignments.

Living Will Challenges - Alabama Estate Law

HealthcareMaking end of life decisions means generating and updating your living will (or advance health care directive). While these documents often appear simple in comparison to other estate planning documents, that doesn?t mean that the underlying issues they addres aren?t complex.

According to a recent article in The Wall Street Journal titled ?A New Look at Living Wills,? unfortunately these issues are only growing increasingly complex.

In its essence, a living will is a document in which you clarify your medical wishes. This allows your loved ones to implement these wishes in the event that you are incapacitated and unable communicate them yourself sometime in the future. With modern medical science, doctors can keep a human body ?alive? long after the ?person? inside has lost what he or she would have regarded as a minimally acceptable quality of life.

With each new advance in medical science, there seem to be more and more ethical and legal dilemmas.

For example, the typical living will contemplates feeding tubes and respirators, but these can maintain a ?persistent vegetative state? leading to shades of gray for the appointed health care agent and physician as they interpret your wishes. Moreover, the boundary between the patient being ?there? or ?not there? is only getting hazier as science progresses. In the end, even physicians don?t always seem to understand the power they may be wielding over life and death.

Planning for your end-of-life scenarios is never easy, nor is it easy to faithfully interpret the wishes of a loved one. Nevertheless, as with all aspects of estate planning, communication with your agents, loved ones, physician and spiritual advisor holds the key to success?however you define it.

Put Your Money Where Your Heart Is. Including Faith and Values in ...

In this segment, I?m very excited about it. I just got my manuscript and I have to review it in case there are any errors. I have a book coming out at the end of July. The title of the book is: Put Your Money Where Your Heart Is. Including Faith and Values in Your Financial and Estate planning.

Many of you are not aware of it, most people come in to talk to our firm about money, but we also have a 3 prong approach. We?re interested in your health and we?re interested in where you?re going to spend eternity. So when I collaborated with some other authors, attorneys, and some other certified financial planners (I?m a certified estate planner and my daughter is a certified estate planner), we wanted something that we had some things in common. So this is a book that really matches up with our values. Let me give you some of the table of contents. If you call ahead of time, the book will probably come out at the end of July or the first part of August, so we?ll take reservations ahead of time. We?ll tell you how you can get this book later on at no cost to you. It?s going to be chock full of stuff. Here is an example of some of the chapters.

  • Connection between faith, values, and money.
  • What is financial planning and who needs it?
  • What if I don?t plan?
  • General investing principles.
  • Risk analysis and portfolio diversification.
  • Faith and values based investment choices.

We?ve had shows in the past talking about more responsible investing.

  • Retirement planning.
  • It?s all about estate planning
  • What is estate planning and who needs it?
  • What if I don?t plan?
  • Preparing for estate planning.

Chapter 8 is broken down into 4 parts, faith and values.

  • Big choices about your helpers. Guardians for minor children. Healthcare decisions during incapacity. We?ve talked about power of attorney in the past. Property managers during incapacitation. Trustees after death. Section 4 has to do with foundation planning techniques, power of attorney for health, power of attorney for property, wills, and probate. We?ve had several shows in the past on that.

There are over 22 chapters? 27 chapters in this book. I didn?t write every chapter but I?ve written certain chapters of this book. So if you?d like to get a copy of this. It will be out the end of July or beginning of August. Just call in and say you?d like to have more information and have it autographed. It?s called Put Your Money Where Your Heart Is. It?s including faith and values in your financial and estate planning. One of the topics in the book has to do with irrevocable funeral trusts, which we?ve been talking about. So there?s a table of contents. Let me give you some information. There?s an appendix, Appendix A, and some of the topics in it. One of them the question asked ?is leaving behind an inheritance biblical?? Well our website is Leave a Legacy. We didn?t come up with that name by chance. In fact, it cost a lot of money to get that domain, especially that ?A? in leavealegacy, but is leaving behind an inheritance biblical?

Leaving an inheritance is a biblical concept. Generally, the history behind it is that it was given to adult children while the parents were still living. It was considered good estate planning. According to Jewish tradition, a father would begin to pass along his inheritance to his oldest son when he reached his mid 30s. Now you might wonder why was that. I tend to think it was so he could monitor his son in managing his wealth while he was still living. Proverbs 13:22 states that a good man leaves an inheritance to his children?s children. Ecclesiastes 7:11-12 says ?wisdom along with an inheritance is good and an advantage to those who see the sun.?

Here?s another question in Appendix A. How should my faith impact my financial decision making? You know, on past shows we talked about yellow money, gray money, and red money. Yellow money is your emergency money, that?s checking account, savings account, money markets, credit union. And we say you should have anywhere from 3 months to 12 months. Red money is money at risk, that?s mutual funds, stocks, bonds, ETFs, commodities, anything that can go up and down. Green money is money that has these characteristics: Your principal is protected. Your interest gain is locked in every year. That would be a CD, a savings bond, an indexed annuity, a fixed annuity. And we talked about being good stewards. We are instructed to pursue wisdom. So when I?m talking about the economy I?m trying to instruct wisdom and understanding. Proverbs 23:22. In Psalms 15:22 it says ?without consultation, plans are frustrated but with many counselors they succeed. We are called to be good stewards of money that God?s given you.? And also Proverbs 16:13 states that if we commit our work to the Lord your plans will be established. And 1 Timothy 5:8 states that if anyone does not provide for his own and especially for those of his household, he is denied the faith ?an unbeliever or infidel. So it?s very important. That?s what we talk about in this retirement roadmap. Something that?s guaranteed. Something that is predictable.

In the Appendix it talks about, Is retirement biblical? There?s only one scripture reference to retirement in the Bible. Isn?t that something? It?s in Numbers 8:25, and it was only for the Levite priests who would retire, and basically they stepped aside at age 50 and that?s it. There?s no other mention specifically of retirement in the scripture. In fact, God created us to work to be producers, to stay active, to influence lives, to impact our world in a positive way. Biblically it appears that retirement should simply be a transaction to a different location or a different focus in our use of time, not a lapse into laziness or non-productivity. Don?t you find that interesting?

Right. So again, if you?d like to get this book we?re talking about the book that I helped author, by the way, is Put Your Money Where Your Heart Is. Including Faith and Values in Financial and Estate Planning. Even if you?re not a believer, you should get the book because it talks about being good stewards of your money. And we?re talking about estate planning, financial planning, power of attorney, wills, trusts, all kinds of good information in there. Let?s talk about another one in this Appendix A. How much is enough? This is a very commonly asked question. Warren Buffet and Bill Gates are traveling the world to enlist billionaires to join the club of billionaires, who have pledged to give away at least 50% of their wealth to charities. Certainly they believe they have more than enough. Scripture gives guidance in answering this question. Ecclesiastes 5:13 states ?There is a grievous evil which I have seen? under the sun. Riches being hoarded by their owners to his herd.?? And Proverbs 15:16 says ?Better a little with a fear of the Lord than great treasures in turmoil with it.? And I go on and on. Is it worth it to try to squeeze an extra 1 or 2%, to be too greedy? Or is it better to have a more predictable. You have to ask the question. What is God calling me to do? We also talk about the moral fabric of responsible investing. Does your money where it?s invested match up with your values? We?ve talked about on past shows we have software called The Evaluator and Investigator which can tell you if your investments are matching up with your moral values.

Now you know, interestingly, we see people who don?t want to know. Some people once their shown they?re really? What do I do now? Now I have to change my behavior. But we just had a couple in last week and they were shocked that some of these companies that are almost made in America type companies they were shocked to find out some of the things they invest in. So that?s really something that if you?re a Christian you should really want to know where it is you?re putting your money.

So if you?d like to get a copy of this book (it?s not out yet but it will be out the end of July or early August), it?s not going to cost you anything for this book, but you have to call our office and we?ll tell you how you can get it. What you will have to do is come in. You don?t have to spend much time. I want to shake your hand. If you want to sit down and talk, that?s fine. But there?s no cost for this book. If you?d like to get a copy of it, call Legacy Financial Strategies. When it first comes out we?ll give you a call and tell you how you can get it at absolutely no charge. The name of the book is Put Your Money Where Your Heart Is. Including Faith and Values in Your Financial and Estate Planning. I?m one of the authors. There are several other authors. There are some attorneys and some other certified financial planners. Thanks for tuning in and we?ll talk to you next week.

RolePlayGateway is a site built by a couple roleplayers who wanted to give a little something back to the roleplay community. The site has no intention of earning any profit, and is paid for out of their own pockets.

If you appreciate what they do, feel free to donate your spare change to help feed them on the weekends. After selecting the amount you want to donate from the menu, you can continue by clicking on PayPal logo.
