Fire alarm blares 15 hours at Pa. public housing

(AP) ? A fire alarm that blared for more than 15 hours at a Pittsburgh-area public housing complex has finally been shut off.

Residents of Glenshaw Gardens in Wilkinsburg say the alarm's strobe lights began flashing and a high-pitched screech began sounding Sunday evening when a resident burned some popcorn.

Allegheny County Housing Authority officials say the alarm was turned off Monday morning.

Building president Bud Joyce says the delay occurred because the housing authority began managing the building in May and didn't have a key to the room where the alarm's control panel is located because the room also contains access to a bank's automatic teller machine.

Accessing the room in a way that would safeguard the ATM caused the delay. Joyce has apologized to residents and says, "It won't happen again."

Hellooo :)

Hey Tilly!

Welcome to RoleplayGateway! I hope you enjoy your time here and if you have any questions, feel free to ask. The community is very helpful and usually if they don't know the answer to your question, they will point you to someone else that might be able to help!

I am going to give you some links that may help you out on the site. The RPG User Manual will give you some basic info on the site and how to use it and the Rules are short, sweet and to the point.

Once you get familiarized with the place, I'd suggest going to either the Interest Checks thread or the Roleplayers Wanted thread. Interest checks are for people looking to gather people for a roleplay that's in its planning stages and Roleplayers Wanted is a thread looking for people to join a RP that has already been created but simply needs more people!

Now, you can do more than simply roleplay here at RPG. A lot of people use the forums for other interactions and for these threads I am just going to link them. These other threads are also useful in getting your 10-thread posts which you need to have up before the system will let you send private messages. This is to prevent spam, basically, with a more in depth post here.

So we have Discussion & Debate, the Creative Realm which has writing/artwork and music, and my favorite the Forum Games.

Hope that helped and if you have any questions, let me know!

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A trio of female firsts and three former GOP presidential contenders were among the first speakers disclosed Monday for the Republican National Convention at the end of the month in Tampa, Fla.

The convention schedule is packed with high-profile names to fire up divergent wings of the Republican Party, from social conservatives to fiscal hawks. They will speak before Mitt Romney accepts the presidential nomination.

Convention leaders were not ready to announce the keynote speaker, a prime speaking slot that has the potential to catapult a rising member of the party to national prominence.

South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez, the first female governors of their states, are among party leaders slated to address the gathering that begins Aug. 27. Martinez has the additional distinction of being the country's first female Hispanic governor.

Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, the first black female to hold that job, is also scheduled to speak.

Sen. John McCain of Arizona was set to speak, as well as a one-time rival, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee. The two, along with Romney, vied for the 2008 presidential nomination. McCain outlasted Romney and the former Baptist pastor in the primary campaign.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich, who briefly ran for the GOP nomination in 2000, also was to speak at the convention along with Florida Gov. Rick Scott, whose state is playing host. Both are tea party favorites and are set to speak to fiscal issues many Republicans hold dear.

"They are some of our party's brightest stars, who have governed and led effectively and admirably in their respective roles," Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said in a statement. "These speakers ? and those that will be announced later ? will help make it a truly memorable and momentous event."

Republicans are holding back on announcing other speakers, including the keynote speaker.

In 2004, a little-known state senator from Illinois named Barack Obama used his turn at the Democratic National Convention in Boston to gain national prominence and ? four years later ? the White House.

When someone is announced as a speaker ? keynote or otherwise ? it could indicate that Romney has decided against that person as a running mate.

Martinez nodded to that dynamic.

"The veep rumor is over. I've said it over and over and over and over, I don't have any interest in being the vice president," she said.

Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida and Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin are both big names in the party believed to be among those Romney is weighing for the vice presidential slot or for the keynote address. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Sen. Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire and Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio also were noticeably absent from the slate of announced speakers and may be contenders for running mate.

If passed over for the vice presidential pick, there is a very good chance they would earn speaking slots ? if not the keynote.

The speakers already announced suggest where Romney is looking to make progress as voters start to pay attention to the fall campaign.

The all-important female vote clearly is a priority ? evidenced by the choices of Haley, Martinez and Rice. Polls through the spring showed President Barack Obama outpacing Romney among female voters, although strategists from both parties say that gender gap is narrowing. A strong play for female voters at the convention should be expected.

Haley, who backed Romney in her state's first-in-the-South primary, is the youngest sitting governor and her husband will deploy to Afghanistan next year. She probably will have a strong message for military families, and for younger voters.

Martinez, who made history in her state and nationally when she was elected, could appeal to Hispanic women, a sizable demographic that broke for Obama four years ago. She can also address voters who feel securing the nation's Southern border is a top concern.

And Rice, an academic who served President George W. Bush as national security adviser and as secretary of state, could appeal to working women and those who put the United States' security as a top concern.

Some suggested she would be an excellent choice for Romney's running mate but Republican conservatives led a revolt, citing her support for abortion rights.

Romney, with limited foreign policy credentials, needs leading foreign policy figures like Rice to vouch for him.

Another prominent voice on foreign policy, McCain, will speak up for Romney.

The Senate veteran, who was a prisoner of war during Vietnam, remains among his party's most visible figures. His dislike for Romney has apparently faded since their primary fight four years ago.

"In these challenging times, America needs Mitt Romney in the White House," McCain said in a statement Republicans planned to release Monday. "The Republican National Convention in Tampa will help give us the momentum to get him there."

Another GOP rival from 2008, former Arkansas Gov. Huckabee, also will try to help Romney.

Huckabee's appeal among social conservatives has not shrunk and his backing is likely to help evangelicals who have been slow to warm to Romney and his Mormon faith.

Among tea party supporters, Romney will get a boost from Kasich. His home state of Ohio is a linchpin in Romney's strategy and no Republican has won the White House without carrying the perennial Midwestern battleground. No Democrat has won without winning Ohio since John F. Kennedy won the presidency in 1960.

Florida is another key state for both campaigns. Florida's Gov. Scott will address the convention, customary when the incumbent governor's party hosts the convention.

Democrats have started rolling out their convention schedule. Marking a first for Hispanics, San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro will deliver the high-profile, prime-time keynote address on the convention's opening night, Sept. 4, in Charlotte, N.C. First lady Michelle Obama will also address convention delegates that night.

Former President Bill Clinton and Elizabeth Warren, the party's popular Senate candidate in Massachusetts, will have prime speaking roles at the convention on Sept. 5.

Vice President Joe Biden and Obama will speak in prime time on Thursday, Sept. 6, the convention's final night.

Stop Your Computer From Crashing: Install A Registry Cleaner

Is your computer not as functional as it used to be? Does it shut down without any warning? Is it taking too long for your programs to fully load? If you?ve encountered any or all of these then it?s possible that you have a problem with your windows registry. If that?s the case then a registry cleaner like Registry Easy is what you?ll need to fix these issues. There is no doubt that this will make your faster.

Is it really necessary to clean up your Windows registry? Why is the registry important? A registry is a feature of computers running on the Windows operating systems. It keeps computers running seamlessly with an user?s habits and profile. Your installed software and hardware, preferred start-up menus as well as profile information are just some of the information it stores. It also monitors how you use your computer. The windows registry is so important and fragile that the most minimal of error can completely break down your computer. Additionally, it isn?t very self-sufficient; it cannot clean itself. For instance, if you uninstall a program, the registry tends to retain information related to that program. This information is kept by the registry even if you have no use for it because the registry does not know how to delete it. This is the importance of cleaning your registry. Regularly cleaning your computer?s registry with registry cleaners would only mean that you are taking responsibility for your computer?s maintenance. Tried and tested registry cleaners like RegGenie, FixCleaner and RegistryFix are available in the market today.

While you can certainly open up the registry and delete entries on your own, this isn?t recommended. As previously discussed, making alterations in your registry no matter how seemingly menial can have the potential to pretty much end your computer?s work life. Safely getting rid of the stored unnecessary information on your computer is what registry cleaners are made for. Theoretically speaking, that is how they?re supposed to work. This makes choosing the best registry cleaner for your computer very important. Sub-par registry cleaners will only leave you with a bigger problem and a non-working computer. This often results when cleaners delete files that are still needed by other programs. Read registry cleaner reviews before your purchase by going to The Software Product Reviews at ReviewMOZ.org. This is to make sure that you get a cleaner that won?t leave you with a damaged registry.

Before you buy any online product visit this PC software site if you think you might want to purchase it.

Olympics threaten business productivity

?

A large audit firm has borne the brunt of the strong popularity of the Olympics. While employees are increasingly likely to follow the games in London on the Internet, the group sent an email to all employees asking them not to watch streaming videos from their professional positions. This practice, along with the growing use of smartphones to follow the Olympics, is thus required as a challenge for companies.

In addition to distract employees, extensive use of streaming, Facebook or Twitter to follow the Olympics is likely to absorb the activity range of the company. If one consumes little twit data on a corporate network, a multiplication of these 140 character messages, often with links to videos, become a real headache for network managers.??

To prevent this, companies have installed firewalls responsible to sort applications. But most companies use firewalls first-generation, unable to make that sort. Another more radical solution, companies have banned their employees to follow the Olympics from their workplace.

The French champions indiscipline

According to a survey conducted by Monster, online recruitment specialist, more than one in four employees in the world declares not be allowed to watch sports on his working hours. And against all odds, it is in the host country of the Olympics that bosses are more rigid: 40% of UK workers do not have a green light to follow the games in the office, followed by Americans (in 35%) and French (30%) cash advances pay day loan. The French are among the most unruly.?Nearly one in five French employee is willing to defy the bans, a proportion well above the overall average of 8%. In contrast, only 5% of employees Germans are ready to get rid of the forbidden employers.

Other companies, however, show more lenient towards the Olympics and their employees. A large U.S. consultancy has mobilized television stations to broadcast continuously competitions. However, employees are allowed to follow their athletes than 12:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.. Partner groups of OJ go even further. Employee bloggers of Procter & Gamble delivering reports of the Games on the intranet.?Coca-Cola, one of the major sponsors of the Olympics, has even decided to send employees volunteered to help local teams to manage the logistics, even if they do not know the business and employees received a return with the person of their choice to attend a race decided by lot.

Q&A with Abhijeet Vijayakar, Founder of BrainNook - EdTech Times

Disaggregation of edtech programs: rather than self-contained programs that have everything in a silo, teachers/students will split practice, assessment and reporting among different programs. Open APIs make it possible for programs to communicate over the Web. Platforms like Edmodo are bringing a critical mass of educators and students together onto a single site; apps help with practice and assessment, across multiple devices (Web and mobile); performance data is pushed back to the platform or into the school SIS.

BrainNook is pursuing this trend aggressively. We are integrated with the Edmodo platform, both pulling data out of the platform and pushing data back in. Going forward, we plan to integrate with additional platforms and be available across multiple devices.

What do you think are the biggest obstacles in adopting technology in the education space?

Selling to districts and schools is still a high-cost process that many startups can?t afford ? so a lot of technology isn?t as widely available as it should be.

However, other changes have made it easier to get technology more widely adopted. Three major ways in which this is happening:

1. Adoption of the Common Core standards means that it?s possible to develop curriculum-based programs that target the majority of schools in the country rather than being restricted to a specific state?s standards. This unifies the market for edtech companies.

2. Educational social networks like Edmodo/Schoology, and social media tools like Twitter, make it possible to target teachers bottom-up rather than selling top-down to schools

3. The spread of cheaper mobile computing devices like tablets means that students don?t have to be at a computer to use a program ? they can use it during a classroom period. Technology can be integrated much more organically and deeply into their everyday learning schedule ? great for programs that want long-term, high-frequency (but possibly short-session) use.

Overall, we?re very optimistic about the emerging mechanisms for bottom-up distribution of educational technology.

Where do you see education technology going in the next 5 years?

Two major trends: connectedness and interoperability.

  • Connectedness:?Students will learn in an environment connected with their peers and teachers, as more edtech companies apply the lessons of social media products like Twitter/Facebook to helping students learn. Students can dip into and out of educational experiences on mobile devices in short bursts as wireless Internet access becomes ubiquitous even in K-12 classrooms. We focus on this type of connected gameplay experience in BrainNook.
  • Interoperability:?Related to the disaggregation trend. Edtech products on the Web will communicate with each other in increasingly sophisticated ways; data silos within each program will break down. Imagine a future where a teacher can purchase e-books for her class from an online store; information about the books she buys is exposed through an open API to a separate website, which then uses those books? content to automatically generate comprehension quizzes or other assignments for students; performance data from these assignments is visible to the teacher when she logs in to a platform like Edmodo, or directly in the school SIS.

Lying less linked to better health

ScienceDaily (Aug. 4, 2012) ? Telling the truth when tempted to lie can significantly improve a person's mental and physical health, according to a "Science of Honesty" study presented at the American Psychological Association's 120th Annual Convention.

"Recent evidence indicates that Americans average about 11 lies per week. We wanted to find out if living more honestly can actually cause better health," said lead author Anita E. Kelly, PhD, professor of psychology at the University of Notre Dame. "We found that the participants could purposefully and dramatically reduce their everyday lies, and that in turn was associated with significantly improved health."

Kelly and co-author Lijuan Wang, PhD, also of Notre Dame, conducted the honesty experiment over 10 weeks with a sample of 110 people, of whom 34 percent were adults in the community and 66 percent were college students. They ranged in age from 18 to 71 years, with an average age of 31. The just-completed study has not yet undergone peer review and has yet to be published.

Approximately half the participants were instructed to stop telling major and minor lies for the 10 weeks. The other half served as a control group that received no special instructions about lying. Both groups came to the laboratory each week to complete health and relationship measures and to take a polygraph test assessing the number of major and white lies they had told that week.

Over the course of 10 weeks, the link between less lying and improved health was significantly stronger for participants in the no-lie group, the study found. For example, when participants in the no-lie group told three fewer white lies than they did in other weeks, they experienced on average about four fewer mental-health complaints, such as feeling tense or melancholy, and about three fewer physical complaints, such as sore throats and headaches, the study found. In contrast, when control group members told three fewer white lies, they experienced two fewer mental-health complaints and about one less physical complaint. The pattern was similar for major lies, Kelly said.

Compared to the control group, participants in the more truthful group told significantly fewer lies across the 10-week study, and by the fifth week, they saw themselves as more honest, Kelly said. When participants across both groups lied less in a given week, they reported their physical health and mental health to be significantly better that week.

In weeks when participants told fewer lies, they reported that their close personal relationships had improved and that their social interactions overall had gone more smoothly that week, the study revealed. "Statistical analyses showed that this improvement in relationships significantly accounted for the improvement in health that was associated with less lying," said Wang, who is a statistician.

At the end of the 10 weeks, participants in the no-lie group described their efforts to keep from lying to others in their day-to-day interactions. Some said they realized they could simply tell the truth about their daily accomplishments rather than exaggerate, while others said they stopped making false excuses for being late or failing to complete tasks, Kelly said. Others said that they learned to avoid lying by responding to a troubling question with another question to distract the person, she said.

The study sample was 63 percent women, 87 percent white, 4 percent black, 4 percent Hispanic, 3 percent Asian-American and 2 percent of another race. Annual family income for the participants was fairly evenly distributed over a range of less than $25,000 to more than $160,000.

Because the findings are new they will be submitted for scientific review and publication later this year, Kelly said.

The "Science of Honesty" project was supported by a grant from the John Templeton Foundation.
