Griffin?s Military-Grade iPhone Case With Kindergarten-Grade Colors

Griffin?s Military-Grade iPhone Case With Kindergarten-Grade Colors

So tasteful.. Which soldier wouldn't want one of these?

Clearly the ?military? part in Griffin?s Military Grade Survivor case for the iPhone doesn?t refer to the color. While olive drab is an option, the majority of the rugged cases come in candy colors more suited to a pre-schooler?s toy box than the killing fields of, well, whichever countries the U.S is currently at war with.

That?s not to say it isn?t tough. The blurb says that the case has been ?independently tested to meet conditions outlined in US Department of Defense MIL-STD-810 and UK Department of Defense Def-Stan 00-35.?

The Survivor combines a polycarbonate shell with a silicone wrap to produce a rainproof, dust-proof case that will keep the iPhone safe, and a multi-position clip keeps it out of the way when you?re shooting people in the face. You can pick different colors for all three, which is exactly how I ended up with the monstrosity above.

For all its protection, the case is fairly cheap, costing $50 whichever garish color combo you choose. And amusingly, the folks at Griffin put a link for pastel-colored styluses on the product page, just in case you want to sketch a little drawing in the middle of a firefight.

Amazon Kindle Fire sold out as new model expected

NEW YORK (AP) ? Amazon.com Inc. says it has sold out of its Kindle Fire tablet computer amid expectations of a new model for the holiday season.

The Internet retailer has a major press conference scheduled for next Thursday in Santa Monica, Calif. It's widely expected to reveal a new model of the Fire there, so Thursday's announcement that the first model is "sold out" suggests that Amazon halted production a while ago to retool for a new model.

Amazon launched the $199 tablet last November. It was the first Kindle with a color screen and the ability to run third-party applications, placing it in competition with Apple Inc.'s iPad, at half the price of the cheapest iPad.

Amazon doesn't say how many Fires it has sold, but says it captured 22 percent of U.S. tablet sales over nine months. That would make it the second-most popular tablet, after the iPad. Tom Mainelli at research firm IDC said that figure matches his estimate of 6.7 million Fires sold, all in the U.S.

The Fire, which is about half the size of the iPad, could face a tougher challenge this holiday season. Many analysts expect Apple to introduce a smaller, cheaper iPad to take on the threat of the Kindle Fire and reach buyers who can't afford a full-sized iPad. In addition, Google just launched its own Kindle-sized tablet, the Nexus 7, and is selling it for $199.

Amazon kept the price of the Kindle Fire low by keeping it small, stripping it of features and taking a small or zero profit margin. Its strategy is to make the Fire a means for people to buy more e-books, music and movie downloads from the Amazon store, which is intimately linked to the device. That's a contrast to the strategy of Apple, which sees content sales as a sideline and wants to make a profit on every device sold.

Apple has sold more than 84 million iPads since its debut in 2010, contributing to strong quarterly earnings and a market valuation that has exceeded $625 billion ? the highest ever for a public company. The iPad 2, released in March 2011, sells for $399. The newest models, out this past March, sell for $499 to $829, depending on the amount of storage and wireless capabilities.

Amazon itself was the main outlet for the Kindle Fire. Its website now directs customers to used Fires available from other merchants. Staples stores recently sold it for $179. It wasn't immediately known whether some stores still had it on shelves.

Amazon could update the rest of its Kindle line at next week's event, too. The current models were launched a year ago. In the intervening time, competitor Barnes & Noble Inc. has launched a Nook e-reader with a built-in screen illuminator for reading in the dark.

ABI Research said Thursday that sales of dedicated e-readers, like the non-Fire, black-and-white Kindles, peaked last year. It expects worldwide sales of e-readers at 11 million in 2012, down from 15 million in 2011.

The research firm expects tablets to outsell e-readers 9 to 1 this year, despite costing four or five time as much. Still, e-readers won't go away completely, ABI analyst Joshua Flood said.

"We believe there will always be a niche market for the dedicated reading device for voracious readers, business travelers, and educational segments, particularly ones that are low-priced," Flood said.

Shares of Amazon, which is based in Seattle, fell $1.40, or 0.6 percent, to $245.72 in afternoon trading Thursday.

Invention of Mobile

Delicious Digg Facebook LinkedIn reddit StumbleUpon Twitter Bit.ly Email PDFmyURL
Mobile telephones have altered the globe of communication. From the initial call built in 1946 on one of only a handful of moveable phones to any one of a typical millions, likely billions of calls made today, the mobile or cell phone has altered this method of communication forever and a day. The mobile telephone is either the largest invention of the twentieth century or the most demanding. It is unquestionable that your particular technology behind the cellular telephone is one of the highest quality inventions and that advances in technology keep making the cell phone progressively a wants device.
It was n't until 1973 when Dr. Martin Cooper, former general manager of the Systems division at Motorola, was credited with making the first ever call on a moveable cell phone-a prerogative he enjoyed as its chief creator. Ironically, the first call was made to the head of lab at Bell, their chief rival. Perhaps this was actually fitting since Bell was responsible inventing the crude cell that was designed to be used in prowl car in the 40s. Four years later, Bell made a prototype that was used on trial in Chicago by up to two thousand people. Two years what is going to, in a completely not related speculation, a separate operation was undertaken in Tokyo. There was considerable international buzz about the new technology as it went from being something existing only in science fiction to something that seems imminently. In 1981 Motorola joined with American Radio Telephone to start a second U.S. cell system test in Washington and Buffalo. The movement was gathering impulse, and by 1982 the FCC finally empowered commercial cellular services for the United States. Ameritech made the first American commercial parallel cellular service available in Chicago. Still, the technology was expensive and it was far from being as accessible as phones are today. But by 1987 cellphone subscribers exceeded one million and airways were crowded together. The 90s brought on a new wave of cell phone technology that ushered in the modern era where one is one of the average person. Day to Day Life. The cellphone changed all of a typical questioning. Now, mothers could call and find out if their children carry it to their destination without any misadventures. Husbands could tell their wives when they were running late. If they weren't enquiring about someone's whereabouts they were wishing they had thought of to tell them something before they were away from their office or home phone. Maybe it was to stop and pick up the kids or to go by the bank because they loan officer called. Whatever the reason, before the invention of the cell phone, they would have to wait to see them and so send them back out to appeal to the issue. Emergencies. Cell phone service has been responsible saving more lives than is definitely accounted for. Were someone try and put a number thereon, it would doubtless be in the millions, simply due to being able to contact help wherever you are located. Doctors can easily stay in touch along with their answering service every single time, making them more available in the case of emergencies. Cell phones have grown key pieces of equipment in search and rescue operations. The chances are very good that a person who gets lost will have a cell phone. The cell phone may be geographically followed using navigation tools and GPS which happens to be built into most new cell phones. There have been completely numerous cases of trampers lost in the woods who were only found due their cell phones. Law Enforcement. In addition to hunt for criminals, law enforcement now go through about offences faster than ever before. The hesitating citizen who doesn't want to discover involved physically involved in a happening crime will most oft call it in to the police. This pays law enforcement a start on capturing criminals. Cell phones that include video recording can really film the offense it turns out, offering grounds that is positive in court. Business Communication. Gone are the days when a deal is lost come from not being at work. Nowadays, deal can be sealed while on vacation. The mobile telephone has made the office open All day every day in some cases. Being out of the office is no longer an option because most business people are tethered to their office during their cell phones. Technology has brought the office to the cell phone with the addition of smart phones and email via the telephone. Documents can be sent, reexamined and sent back all while being on the go. The Flip Side. With cell phones the workday is never over and time spent with family or friends can be perpetually off and on unless the tools is powered off. There are safety issues besides with cell phones. Drivers who can't wait up to the point they are stopped to have a conversation run a much greater risk to be in an accident. Using an earpiece helps the problem but does not avoid it beeing the focus is still on the conversation.

Understanding Flood and Wind Damage Insurance

As the Gulf Coast braces for hurricane-force weather, you may be wondering how flood and windstorm insurance coverage works. Here are five things you should know:

1. People usually underestimate the risk
90% of all natural disasters involve flooding, according to the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). To further underscore the danger, the NFIP notes that homes have a 26 % chance of flooding during the life of a typical 30-year mortgage. That compares to the nine percent risk your home will suffer fire damage.

Also, keep in mind that if you live in flood-prone areas, your homeowners policy doesn't protect you for flood damage. You'll need separate insurance for that.

2. The 30-day clause
You can't just go out and buy flood insurance after learning that a hurricane or tropical storm is approaching. Coverage becomes effective 30 days after purchase.

3. Wind damage and insurance
Insurance for windstorm damage caused by hurricanes usually comes with a deductible tied to your home's value. That deductible typically ranges from 1 to 5 %.

In some coastal areas, with high wind risk, hurricane deductibles may be higher and even approach 10 percent.

4. Premiums for flood insurance
The average premium for flood insurance in 2010 was about $600 a year. But it can climb dramatically in a high-risk area.

Flood insurance in low- to moderate-risk areas is much less, as low as $129 a year in some cases.

5. Limits of federal flood protection insurance
Flood insurance provided by the NFIP tops out at $250,000, so you may have to buy more flood coverage with a private insurer.

These policies can add as much as several million dollars of extra coverage to your NFIP base, but can only be purchased after first securing the NFIP protection.?

UN chief to raise human rights in Iran meetings

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon plans to tell Iran's leaders on the sidelines of a summit of nonaligned nations that the human rights situation in the country is critical.

U.N. associate spokesman Farhan Haq told reporters Tuesday that the U.N. chief will also convey the world's concerns on Iran's nuclear program, the Syria crisis and terrorism.

The U.N. announced last week that Ban would attend the summit of the 120-member Nonaligned Movement despite strong opposition from Israel, the U.S. and Jewish groups. Haq said he was heading to Tehran on Tuesday.

Since the announcement, human rights groups have urged the secretary-general to raise human rights concerns during his expected meetings with Iran's supreme leader and president.

The nonaligned bloc is second in members only to the U.N. General Assembly.
