France vows to stay on deficit reduction track

PARIS (AP) ? France is vowing to meet its deficit-reduction target for this year despite offering billions of euros in financial guarantees to struggling companies and state agencies.

In a budget amendment Wednesday, the government says it remains on track to cut its budget deficit to 4.5 percent of the French economy's gross domestic product, largely thanks to falling borrowing costs that have saved the country ?2.4 billion ($3 billion) this year.

President Francois Hollande's administration is staking its credibility on meeting a series of deficit targets. But France's waning growth has meant the government has repeatedly had to cut spending and raise taxes.

At the same time, it has provided lifelines to carmaker Peugeot-Citroen and the unemployment insurance agency.

The amendment also promises to save ?1 billion by going after tax fraud.

Goose Creek High School football team loses appeal

COLUMBIA ? Goose Creek High School football coach Chuck Reedy wouldn?t talk to reporters gathered outside the High School League office Wednesday night after his school lost its appeal to remain in the Division II-AAAA playoffs.

But later in the evening, Reedy indicated the fight might not be over.

?We?re looking at our options,? he said by phone.

The only option at this point is the court process, and it?s an avenue the school and Berkeley County School District indicated they are considering. But time is short. The Gators were scheduled to play Bluffton in the second round of the playoffs at home Friday night.

The High School League?s Executive Committee voted 9-2 to uphold Goose Creek?s ban from the playoffs for allowing an ineligible player to participate in games. Goose Creek requested a second vote, asking the committee to consider a hardship case for the student involved. That vote went 10-1 against the team. The name of the player involved was not disclosed.

Wednesday?s hearing came after High School League Commissioner Jerome Singleton?s ruling Tuesday that Goose Creek used an ineligible player and therefore was disqualified for the playoffs. He ruled the school must forfeit 10 games the player dressed for or participated in.

Goose Creek, the defending Division II-AAAA state champion, was the No. 1 team in the state with a 12-0 record, including a convincing victory last week over Conway in the first round of the playoffs. The Gators were scheduled to host Bluffton on Friday, but now Conway will travel to Bluffton for the second-round game.

Reedy said he doesn?t know what he will tell his players.

?They have done everything right and don?t deserved to be punished,? he said. ?I don?t know what I will say. Words won?t make it any better. Nothing I will tell them will make it better.?

The meeting was open to the public, but Goose Creek requested a closed session and reporters were forced to leave the room.

Jay Bender, an attorney for the S.C. Press Association, said the closed session violated the Freedom of Information Act.

?There was a lawsuit a number of years ago that determined the High School League was a public body,? he said. ?The closed hearing is in violation of the law. I don?t understand it. It?s a body that takes public money and holds private meetings. If they want to operate like that, they should become a private club.?

Bender said the school was being punished, not the student.

?The player doesn?t have to be identified publicly,? he said.

Rodney Thompson, the Berkeley County School District superintendent, said he was proud of Reedy and his players.

?Of course, we?re obviously disappointed with the decision and the impact it?s going to have on the Goose Creek players and the Goose Creek community,? he said. ?We?re going to move forward from this day on and we?re going to take care of our students. That?s our main concern.?

Goose Creek was hoping for a fate similar to Summerville?s in 2005. The Green Wave knowingly used an ineligible player on the junior varsity football team. The Executive Committee upheld Singleton?s ruling but granted Summerville mercy and let the Green Wave varsity team back into the playoffs.

In the appeal, Reedy and Goose Creek Principal Jimmy Huskey said they notified the league immediately upon learning that a student on the team might be ineligible. They said the school and district exercised the right to appeal based on extraordinary conditions that there was no ill intent and no competitive advantage was gained by the team, players, coaches, staff or administration.

The ineligible player was a transfer student, and the updated student transcript record in question was received after the student was enrolled at the school. The original transcript used at the beginning of the season was incomplete, and when the student registered for winter sports, an updated transcript was used and the error was found.

A New Console Sonic Game is Due Next Year | GenGAME

No, the image above isn?t from a new Sonic game ? but according to Sega of Europe, the Blue Blur is due to see a new big console game next year. He?ll also see a massive merchandising expansion, as well as ?several new digital games.? Whether that actually means ?new games? or just ?new re-releases of old games? remains to be seen ? there?s a lot of potential to bring large chunks of the series to Wii U, including the DreamCast games, Sonic CD and the HD version of last year?s Sonic Generations.

Regardless of whether the game takes a side-scrolling perspective or goes full 3D again, we?ll probably have our eye on it. Read on for the full statement from Sega Europe?s brand leader Sissel Henno.

Over the next year there will be a big focus on the expansion of toy distribution across Europe. Similarly, we will also be growing the apparel, publishing and stationary categories. We will have several new digital titles launching as well as a new boxed game, so there will be plenty of opportunities to link marketing campaigns across games and merchandise.

Is the BBB Logo on the Debt Savers Website Misleading? | Get Out ...

A tipster (send in your tips here) asked me to look at a website for a debt relief website called Debt Savers. Their concern was the use of the BBB logo as a badge of trust by this company.

And they are correct, the Debt Savers website at DebtSavers.us or DebtSavers.info does display the BBB Accredited Member logo on the top right of the site.

What makes this an interesting case to discuss is if the BBB logo can actually be displayed by this company.

A look at the website and the site privacy policy gives us no clue where the company is actually located and where they might be incorporated or registered. ? Source, Source

A search on the BBB website could not locate a company called Debt Savers. It wasn?t until I chased down the domain ownership that I found a possible link.

The domain DebtSavers.us is owned by a lead generation company:

Raymond Bartreau
Best Rate Referrals, LLC
6785 W. Russell Road
Suite 210
Las Vegas, NV 89118

Best Rate Referrals (source) does have an A+ BBB rating and is an accredited member for their business category, marketing programs & services. ? Source

So my question to you is at what point does a marketing company step over the line in their use of the BBB logo to promote a lead generation site?

Do you think that the company that actually holds the rating should be prominently identified or is this practice just fine with you?

It looks like this same practice is being used on other lead generations sites that are part of this companies network as well. ? Source

Other sites in this network include:

ExclusiveDebtLeads.net
LoanModificationLeads.net
Car-Warranty.co
CarWarranty.ws
ShortSaleFaster.com
LoanModificationHelper.com

When Does It Become Deceptive?

Putting the BBB logo issue aside for a moment. In the case of the Debt Savers website isn?t it likely that the average consumer visiting the site might actually believe that Debt Savers is a real company?

Apparently there is no such company. It is only a lead generation site.

Florida gun range lets customers shoot at each other

Tiffany Chapin takes part in a personal safety course at Combat City (WKMG)

UPDATE: This story has been modified from an earlier version.

Combat Shooting Sports, a Florida gun range, has taken the concept of target practice to a whole new level. Customers can actually engage in simulated combat against other people, shooting real guns at each other.

However, as local affiliate WKMG explains, the customers aren't using live ammunition. Owner Dave Kaplan gives visitors a choice: He can modify your own gun to fire Simunition rounds.

"General dynamics created Simunition decades ago for the military and later law enforcement," Kaplan said in an email to Yahoo! News. "They recently created a civilian range program and we are probably the only facility doing person on person fighting. We are taking firearm training to a level previously held by professionals."

And while most customers are going for fun, Kaplan says a growing percentage of his visitors are women who show up to improve their personal safety skills and knowledge.

"Most women walk out of here very empowered, and that's the key," says Tiffany Chapin, who teaches one of the safety courses targeted towards women.

"We are insured, certified, and [use] proper safety gear from the Simunition corporation is always utilized," Kaplan added. "People are using real firearms modified to preclude the firing of a live/lethal round."

A trip to Combat Shooting Sports costs about $150, which includes the cost of the gun modification.

After receiving their modified guns and donning protective gear, customers are broken up into teams and take part in various games ranging from capture the flag to hostage simulations. Games can last from about 10 minutes to more than an hour. But customers are allowed to stay for the entire day and Kaplan says many do just that.

For more recreational users, Kaplan also owns Combat City, which offers customers the chance to engage in target practice and simulated fights using an airsoft gun from the store.

The Airsoft rounds don't inflict serious damage but they do hurt. An explainer on the Combat City website explains, "There is a degree of pain associated with airsoft just like paintball.? It is significantly less than paintball and without the swelling."

And for added safety, participants are outfitted in a set of protective gear including helmets and padding over sensitive areas.

All of the action takes place inside a former grocery store that has been modified into an indoor combat setting.

Children are allowed to fire the Airsoft guns, but are put in situations where they are themselves on the receiving end of fire. An earlier version of this contained a link to another story that inaccurately implied that the children were taking part in simulated. combat exercises.

A disclaimer on the Combat City site says "all ages are welcome," adding, " We can not tell you what you or your child can handle.? There are young kids playing at Combat City on a daily basis, only you can decide."

"We get 'em at all ages," Kaplan said in a separate interview with Fox35, noting that one of the participants on the video was 8-years-old.

Inactivity Is Killing Us

Inactivity: a weapon of mass destruction

Inactivity is killing us. Where sometimes there is a lot of controversy in scientific articles, there is none here: inactivity is by all evidence the fourth killer in the world. Put in another way, inactivity is the cause of one in 10 deaths in the world! Research has shown that inactivity caused in 2008 as many deaths as tobacco, which means that year, 5,3 million people died because they did not move enough! Dr I-Min Lee of the Harvard Medical School in Boston links 6 to 10 % of four major killers (cardio-vascular disease, type 2 diabetes, colon and breast cancer) to the fact that people are not even moderately active. Cartoonist Glasbergen got the right message but over estimated workout time in this caption: what fits better in your busy schedule? Being active one hour a day or being dead 24 hours a day? The message is even more disturbing when the right amount of time is put in: 20 minutes of moderate activity. This is all that would be needed to save the lives of 5,3 million people worldwide.

Exercise: a weapon of mass construction

There is more. Being active does not only save lives! It increases quality of lives! It has a strong favorable effect on many diseases: Alzheimer?s disease, depression, high blood pressure, diabetes, osteoporosis and of course, obesity. We?ll cover these subjects separately in future posts. Activity has even been proven to slow aging at the chromosome level! An easy way to see this is to consider activity as the ultimate weapon of mass construction.

Four Steps to defeat inactivity

1. Commit to yourself. Your life is worth 20 minutes of your time everyday or 30 minutes 5 days a week. Remember: you are meant to be fit and healthy. Inactivity will destroy this. What you are committing is to a lifestyle change. You deserve the best!

2. Don?t be fancy! You do not need expensive gym membership or ineffective gizmos that promise you health without effort. To begin, something as simple as walking briskly everyday will put you on the right tract. The principle is simple: what you do MUST ask a little more effort to your heart, lungs and muscles than sitting in a chair? The idea is to build some reserve to help you get through life?s challenges.

3. Once you are a little more fit, and it won?t take long, you?ll be able to move on to something a little more challenging. But once again, nothing fancy! You do not need a gym membership. A home training program with some support for motivation (online support is ideal) will do.

4. Believe in yourself and believe in your success.

Ready to invest in yourself? Ready for an active lifestyle? Visit my blog at http://www.blog.fitnessmissionpossible.com, hit the ?contact me? page and tell me what type of activity you like. I?ll be glad to help you choose an activity you?ll love practicing day after day. Remember: you deserve it! Believe in yourself!

France recognizes new Syria opposition, U.S. restrained

BEIRUT (Reuters) - France became the first Western power to recognize a fledgling Syrian opposition coalition fully, stepping out beyond the United States, which said on Wednesday the body must first show its clout inside Syria.

Six Gulf Arab states recognized the Syrian National Coalition for Opposition and Revolutionary Forces on Monday and France followed suit the next day, unlike its European partners.

President Francois Hollande's decisive posture on Syria recalled that of his predecessor Nicolas Sarkozy on Libya last year, when France led calls for NATO action to protect civilians which effectively helped Libyan rebels topple Muammar Gaddafi.

The European Union bans arms sales to Syria, but Hollande said the question of arming rebels would be examined when the coalition formed a transitional government. Paris had previously ruled this out, fearing arms could reach Islamist militants.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the formation of the coalition, which supersedes the widely discredited Syrian National Council as the face of the Syrian opposition, was an important step, but did not offer it full recognition or arms.

"We have long called for this kind of organization. We want to see that momentum maintained," Clinton told reporters in the Australian city of Perth. "As the Syrian opposition takes these steps and demonstrates its effectiveness in advancing the cause of a unified, democratic, pluralistic Syria, we will be prepared to work with them to deliver assistance to the Syrian people."

Suhair al-Atassi, a vice president of the new coalition, said that once it had proved it represents "revolutionary forces" on the ground, there would be no excuse for Western powers not to provide some form of military backing.

"The ball now is in the international community's court," she told Reuters in an interview in Dubai, blaming Western reticence to arm the rebels for the rise of extremism in Syria.

"There is no more excuse to say we are waiting to see how efficient this new body is. They used to put the opposition to the test. Now we put them to the test," she declared.

AIR STRIKE NEAR TURKEY

Syrian insurgents have few weapons against Assad's air force and artillery, which can pound rebel-held territory at will.

A Syrian warplane bombed the town of Ras al-Ain near the Turkish border again on Wednesday, rocking buildings on the frontier and sending up huge plumes of smoke, in the latest of several attacks since rebels captured the town last week.

After 20 months of a conflict that has killed more than 38,000 people, fragmented Syrian opposition groups struck a deal in Qatar on Sunday to form a coalition led by Damascus preacher Mouaz Alkhatib, who has appealed for international recognition.

Arab League and EU foreign ministers meeting in Cairo on Tuesday welcomed the coalition's formation as an important step, but did not recognize it as Syria's sole authority.

France, however, went ahead on its own. Hollande told a news conference in the French capital that Paris recognized the new Syrian national coalition "as the sole legitimate representative of the Syrian people and as future government of a democratic Syria making it possible to bring an end to Bashar al-Assad's regime".

Clinton announced an extra $30 million in aid to those affected by the war in Syria, to be delivered via the United Nations' World Food Programme, which is supplying food to more than a million people in Syria and to 408,000 Syrian refugees.

The United States says it is providing only humanitarian aid and non-lethal assistance to Assad's opponents, it acknowledges that some of its allies are arming rebels - something which Russia says shows Western powers want to decide Syria's future.

Russia and China have blocked any U.N. Security Council action on Syria, prompting Washington and its allies to say they could move beyond U.N. structures for their next steps.

So far, concerted action on Syria has been thwarted by divisions within the opposition, as well as by big power rivalries and a regional divide between Sunni Muslim foes of Assad and his Shi'ite allies in Iran and Lebanon.

An Iranian revolutionary guard general blamed Western, Turkish and Arab meddling for the bloodshed in Syria.

"They must leave the government and people of Syria alone so they can take the necessary decision about the kind of government in Syria," Brigadier-General Massoud Jazayeri was quoted as saying by the semi-official Fars news agency.

China also said Syrians should determine their own future.

"A political transition process guided by the Syrian people should be initiated and pushed forward as soon as possible, to realize an appropriate peaceful and just resolution," Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said.

(AP) ? A small plane with three people aboard crashed into a home near an airport in Jackson Tuesday evening and authorities did not have immediate information on casualties.

A deputy fire chief told WJTV-TV that one person escaped the burning home with minor injuries, but it was not immediately clear if anyone else was inside. One patient from the scene was in good condition at University of Mississippi Medical Center, said spokesman Jack Mazurak. He wouldn't give the person's name or gender or the extent of the injuries, citing privacy laws.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen did not immediately have information about the condition of the people aboard the Piper PA-32 single-engine plane. A single home was hit, said Jackson Fire Department Assistant Chief R.D. Simpson and a coroner was on the scene.

Roger and Michele Latham, from Superior Pallet Company in Flowood, Miss., own the plane, said their grown daughter, Emily Latham. Latham was near the crash site and said her father was supposed to have been on board but changed his plans.

"He went hunting," she said. "Thank God."

Witnesses say large flames and black smoke rose about 50 feet from a burning house that was hit in the neighborhood of modest, single-family homes surrounded by big magnolia and oak trees about a half-mile from the zoo.

The plane had just departed Hawkins Field Airport headed for Raymond, Miss., the FAA said.

The plane took off at 5:10 p.m. and shortly after, the pilot asked for permission to return to the airport, according to a news release from the Jackson Municipal Airport Authority. The plane was unable to return and crashed.

Vivian Payne, who lives about six blocks from the crash site, said she heard a loud bang that sounded different from an electrical transformer blowing.

"It shook the walls of my house," Payne said as she stood among ambulances, police cars and fire trucks, their lights flashing in the chilly night air.

The weather in Jackson is partly cloudy in the 40s.

The National Transportation Safety Board along with the FAA will be investigating the cause of the crash.
