McCoy Wins Rhodes Scholarship - Yale Bulldogs

November 20, 2012

Hurdler and Thrower to Continue Her Studies at Oxford

New Haven, Conn. ? Senior Dakota McCoy, a hurdler and thrower on the women's track and field team, has been awarded a Rhodes Scholarship for her outstanding academic and personal achievements. At Yale, she is a leader both on and off the track: she has conducted research in the fields of ecology, primate cognition, and evolutionary biology, resulting in several peer-reviewed publications, in addition to her commitment as a freshman counselor in Branford College. McCoy is also a member of Whim 'n Rhythm and won the Francis Gordon Brown Prize for the class of 2013, awarded to the member of the class who best upholds the standards of intellectual ability, high personhood, capacity for leadership and service to the University set by Francis Gordon Brown of the class of 1901. Her previous academic honors include a Goldwater Scholarship and membership in Phi Beta Kappa.

McCoy credits her time on the track and field team as key to her success at Yale: "I have always been proud and honored to represent Yale on the track, and track and field has been the integral part of my time at Yale and my development as a person," she said.

"Track and field has unquestionably taught me discipline and commitment, two necessary aspects of scientific research," she commented.

She lists head coach David Shoehalter, the Mark T. Young '68 Director of Cross Country and Track and Field, as a great mentor and supporter of her myriad pursuits: "There is no way I could have accomplished anything close to what I have without the unwavering support and help of Coach Shoehalter?he is a great track coach, a great person and a great friend! He is even an excellent birdwatcher. Often at practice, we would discuss killdeer who nested on our fields, ospreys in nearby swamps, or northern harriers soaring over our heads! He always helped me balance track, classes, and other commitments," said McCoy, adding that "when some aspects of academics or research came into conflict with track, Coach Shoehalter always trusted me to balance my various commitments and 100% supported excellence in these other activities. This is a really wonderful and unique opportunity afforded to me by Coach Shoe and the Yale track team."

McCoy also acknowledges her teammates as influential: "Of course, our path through life is largely defined by our community of friends, and I have to thank my teammates- especially Allison Rue, Jenna Poggi, Nina Renker, and Adele Jackson-Gibson- for being great people and wonderful friends."

"The Rhodes Scholarship is an amazing opportunity to represent Yale track and field?an organization I feel so proud and honored to be associated with?on the national stage. I could not be more excited and humbled by this opportunity, and I know it would not have been possible without Coach Shoe and Yale track," she said.

McCoy will pursue a M.Sc. by research in zoology at Oxford University beginning in fall 2013.

Animals & Slot Machines Cause Legal Trouble For The Hobbit | The ...

Not all that glitters is gold

Peter Jackson is probably hoping the old saying, ?there?s no such thing as bad publicity? applies to his current predicament. The Hobbit is currently swirling in midst of two very different controversies. The first is allegations of animals dying on production of the films, the other involves unauthorized merchandising not limited to, but including Lord of the Rings slot machines. Jackson has issued a statement on the former.

Probably the more volatile of the two is the animal deaths and that?s mostly because PETA is getting involved. They?re planning to protest the premiere after hearing 27 animals housed at a farm over 100 miles from the set died. The animals in question weren?t being used in the film at the time but the ranch itself was said to be unsafe with sinkholes and steep bluffs.?The American Humane Association has also gotten involved and went outside their usual jurisdiction, usually only the set, to check on the conditions and try to improve them.

Meanwhile, Jackson and the producers took to Facebook to make a statement:

The Hobbit production has always instituted swift and immediate?investigations?in to any concerns of any kind over the treatment of animals under its care. A?prompt and thorough investigation into the recent unsubstantiated allegations by?the American organisation, PETA, in to the ?hobbling? of a horse during the?making of?The Hobbit was undertaken. No evidence of such a practice was found?to have occurred at any time. Further, the production contacted the owner of?the horse concerned who provided the following statement: ?I am 100% happy with?the return of Shanghai and his condition. In the term that he was leased he was?picked up and returned to me two times. On both occasions there was not a mark?on him and he was healthy and happy. He has shown no signs of ill-treatment. I?would not hesitate in leasing him to the movie again.?

To date, the only horse wranglers whose treatment of animals fell below the?production?s standard of care seem to be the two wranglers who have chosen to?level this new accusation on the eve of the premiere of the first Hobbit film?and who were dismissed by the production over a year ago. Reports of their?actions are documented in several written statements dating back to October?2011.

The production regrets that PETA has chosen to make such a serious accusation,?which has distressed many of the dedicated Kiwis who worked with animals on the?films ? including trainers, wranglers, care-givers, farm workers and animal?health care professionals ? without properly vetting the source from which they received this information.

They also included several statements from others supporting them, which you can read here.

The other issue right now is with?the estate of author?J.R.R. Tolkien. They are suing the producers for overstepping their merchandising rights. The Hollywood Reporter writes, ?The Tolkien estate and its book publisher HarperCollins claim that Warner Bros., its New Line subsidiary and?Rings/Hobbit rightsholder Saul Zaentz Co. have infringed the copyright in the famous books and breached a contract. The crux of the suit is the estate?s contention that a decades-old rights agreement entitles the studio to create only ?tangible? merchandise based on the books, not an ?online slot machine? or other digital exploitations that the estate calls highly offensive.?

The problem here seems to be, no one predicted the digital age would come so fast and never bothered to update the contract. So?the Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring: Online Slot Game and other similar products that already exist or are in planning stages are a big no-no. This includes downloadable video games and other apps.

Warner Bros. has yet to comment.

PFT: Steelers not the same without?Big Ben?

129256-650-366AP

You had a hunch coming in the Ravens? playmakers might have a bit of an edge.

You just didn?t know they were going to be Jacoby Jones and Corey Graham.

The return man?s touchdown and the backup corner?s interception, respectively, were the difference in the Ravens? 13-10 win over the Steelers.

The road win moves the Ravens to 8-2 this year, in firm control for the division title, two up with six to play.?That they did it against a Steelers team without quarterback Ben Roethlisberger matters not at all to them, as they stayed perfect in non-Ben games.

The Steelers were sloppier than you?d expect, even with a backup quarterback on the field. From wasted timeouts to ill-timed penalties, they weren?t sharp. The games are always close, with seven of the last nine decided by a field goal. They?re generally better-played than this, however.

Here are five more things we learned on Sunday Night Football:

1. He is a veteran. And the touchdown run was cute.

But Byron Leftwich isn?t going to take the Steelers far, such that he?ll be able to.

He was clearly hurting coming down the stretch, and if he wasn?t, you?d worry more.

He was a dreadful 7-of-17 passing (41.2 percent) for 85 yards in the first half, a 57.2 rating.

The interception in the third quarter was exactly the kind of play you can?t make in that situation, and he was a sitting duck a few times, unable to get out of the pocket.

Close-ups showed him in discomfort, and if he turns up with broken ribs or something, we?ll apologize for the portion of his game in which he was hurt and not just inefficient.

2. It is not fair to compare the current Ravens defense to previous incarnations.

As in, the ones that were good at playing defense.

Without Ray Lewis, they look fairly rudderless at times. Terrell Suggs is back, sort of, but not explosive enough to take up the slack. Ed Reed is still better than most, but he?s not Ed Reed anymore. And Haloti Ngata must be hurting more than he?s letting on (after taking last week off), because he?s not making an impact at the moment.

That the numbers Sunday night were good remains a function of the Steelers? offense as much as their own superiority. They were more timely than stout, and got the win. But they?ll struggle against teams with better offenses.

3. The Steelers do have the league?s best defense, so it shouldn?t be a surprise.

But the job they did on Ravens wide receiver Torrey Smith was impressive.

The main deep threat was held in check, with just one catch for 7 yards.

And without him, it threw their whole plan out of whack, and it kept the Steelers in the game longer than they ordinarily would have been.

4. Not much was working in the first half for the Ravens offense.

But give coordinator Cam Cameron credit for consistency.

Even though they ran 13 times for just 20 yards in the first half, they kept running. For any team, much less a team with a quarterback the caliber of Joe Flacco, the temptation would be to stop bothering to run.

But keeping tempo can be as important as yards gained, as running the ball often has cumulative effects. It kept the Steelers honest as much as anything, and Ray Rice getting 20 rush attempts is generally a good thing, even if he gained just 40 yards.

5.?Winning coin tosses and choosing directions is more important in Pittsburgh than other places.

Because trying to kick a field goal into the open end of Heinz Field is treacherous, as Justin Tucker showed in the first half, missing a 41-yarder.

He had only missed one other field goal this year, but there are? no sure things if you?re kicking toward the Monongahela. Or Allegheny. Or Ohio. I can never remember which.

Congratulations, Sec-Gen Jinping, and President Rajapaksa!

Xi Jinping`s elevation to the role of the Secretary General of the Communist Party of China at the 18th National Congress makes him effectively the leader of one-fifth of the world`s humanity. This is a one-fifth that has fond, longstanding and fraternal relations with this country -- which have been cemented with such great exuberance during the seven year tenure of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, whose ascension to office after his election victory in 2005 took place exactly seven years ago on this day.

China is at the cusp of world leadership, and if the country is not the number one world power, she is definitely the nation that ranks near number one if not number one in fact -- in being great friends with Sri Lanka.

China has wholeheartedly supported this country in international forums, and this has been at variance with the regressive polices of some other powerful countries which have not fully understood the difficulties of coming out of a long-running period of armed conflict. China on the other hand stood by us through thick and thin, and that`s due to the Chinese sense of pragmatism which is imbued in the Chinese Communist Party`s current day ruling credo.

Xi Jinping the new Chinese leader, a `princeling` who is the son of a Chinese revolutionary who fought shoulder to shoulder with the late chairman Mao, showed the world a glimpse of this hard-headed Chinese sense of `can-do`, when in a short but power-packed speech on assuming office, he talked about improving the quality of lives of the Chinese people. Not for him, the theatrical flourishes that were in the past almost a trademark quantity for any perorations by Chinese statesmen ...

Instead, he spoke of cleansing the Chinese Communist party of bribery and corruption, and therefore instantly established his credentials as a man with his feet firmly rooted in the realities of his time.

Sri Lankans will to a man and a woman, no doubt wish the Chinese citizens greater prosperity and even better lives than now, under the guidance of the new Communist party chief and his seven member politburo. China is the next global superpower, definitely, if she is not already one ...

The Chinese governance ethos is closer to our hearts, and close to the imagination of President Rajapaksa whose seven year tenure was infused with the same pragmatic vision envisioned by the Chinese leader in crisp and friendly tones at the Communist Party National Congress just the other day.

Therefore China is extremely kindred to us -- and this bond of fraternal kingship between the people and leaders of these two countries is preceded by excellent bi-lateral relations that go back for what seems to be millennia ...

But the Chinese today are a powerhouse. The economy is the second strongest in the world, having overtaken that of Japan not so very long ago, and China is on a world-changing trajectory, a journey triumphed by the fact that this country`s citizens comprise one fifth of the globe`s people.

These sheer numbers enhance China`s potential economic clout almost exponentially. But what`s heartening is that with this gathering economic heft, China has not lost her way.

The Chinese have by and large not tried to police the globe, and have on the contrary identified with the practical difficulties that a country such as ours faces. There were no grand flourishes that alluded to global dominance, when Xi Jinping spoke on his ascension to office, though the new Chinese leadership can well afford to speak with a swagger.

This tendency of humility also points to China`s instinctive sense of pragmatism as the country assumes a position of near unprecedented global responsibility. In all, the new politburo and the new leader`s words about getting down to the job, are a happy augur to the Chinese people -- all 7 billion of them - and by extension to the people of China-friendly Sri Lanka, and the people of the world. We wish the Chinese people a prosperous future on this occasion of the inauguration of a brand new leadership, as we also warmly wish China`s dear friend President Rajapaksa on the seventh anniversary of his own ascension to office. Subha Anagathayak!

Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) is out with a new report claiming that the Pentagon routinely spends billions each year on programs that have nothing to do with military readiness, arguing that at a time of budget troubles, there's no reason not to cut out what isn't needed.

As I detailed on my Twitter feed (@jamiedupree), the Coburn report details a host of items that may make the average American pound the dashboard in frustration, wondering whether the spending of the federal government can ever be reined in:

    * Money from the military went to fund studies about slang used on Twitter and how it could be used to determine where that Twitter user was from is.gd/MaqkOV

    * Twelve grants worth $6 million over two years went to research on the science of story telling http://t.co/clvdChIe

    * The Navy spent $450,000 to observe the social interactions between a military robot and babies

    * The Air Force spent $681,387 on a grant for research that showed a man brandishing a gun looked more powerful than a man without a weapon http://t.co/0JXYqYuJ

You can read Coburn's report - titled, the "Department of Everything" at http://is.gd/9CEiDB

Sources: Apple Paid $7 Million For Color Labs

Screen shot 2012-11-19 at 3.51.58 PMIn a lawsuit filed today by a former founding employee of Color Labs, one moment of clarity emerged amidst some seriously salacious allegations: Color's approximately 20 person technology team and some of its key intellectual property assets were indeed acquired by Apple last month. This deal was buzzed about a lot in the press, but to date neither company has provided on the record confirmation -- the deal was a central point in the suit, since former Color employee Adam Witherspoon claims he was intentionally left out from the move to Apple. TechCrunch has confirmed with sources involved that the Apple deal did indeed go through, and the price paid in all was $7 million.

(AP) ? Peyton Manning isn't the only player the Denver Broncos brought in to make things happen.

Von Miller got the call from Denver, too, and the second-year linebacker is becoming as big of a headache for Broncos opponents as Manning is.

On a day Manning threw three more touchdown passes, Miller added three sacks and two forced fumbles to his tally to make it a miserable afternoon for Philip Rivers and the San Diego Chargers in a 30-23 win on Sunday.

The Broncos (7-3) stretched their lead in the AFC West to three games, and Rivers was all but conceding the division.

"They're not losing four of six, I can guarantee you that," said the quarterback, whose team fell to 4-6.

Not if the Denver defense keeps playing this way.

And especially not if Manning stays on the pace he's enjoying in his first season in the Mile High City. He won his 148th regular-season game to tie Hall of Famer John Elway for second on the all-time list for starting quarterbacks. He's 38 behind Brett Favre.

Manning was far from his best, too. The numbers looked decent ? 25 of 42 for 270 yards ? but he threw an interception that safety Eric Weddle returned for a 23-yard touchdown and was sacked for a safety.

"I guess I have to point out the obvious: That's a good NFL football team," Manning said. "We'll take the win and run with it."

But they may be running with it without Willis McGahee, who hurt his right knee early in the second quarter when he was tackled by defensive back Quentin Jammer and didn't return.

"It kind of swelled up so we're just going to be precautionary," Broncos coach John Fox explained. "We'll evaluate him moving forward."

With McGahee out, running responsibilities fell to Lance Ball and rookie Ronnie Hillman.

Ball's biggest contribution may have been on a block, when he slid over to pick up a blitzing linebacker to give Manning time to step up in the pocket and hit Eric Decker in stride for a 20-yard touchdown.

Hillman broke off a couple of solid runs, including a 21-yarder in the first quarter.

Still, the offense just wasn't clicking the same way as it does when McGahee's lining up in the backfield.

"We hope he's OK," Manning said.

Playing way better than 'OK' was Miller, who made things quite uncomfortable for Rivers. The speedy linebacker took over the league lead from Houston defensive lineman J.J. Watt with his three-sack performance. Miller has seven of his 13 sacks in the last three games.

"He's just getting started," said defensive end Elvis Dumervil, who brought down Rivers on the final play of the game. "He's crazy. Crazy day for him."

Miller used some nifty moves to get to Rivers over and over and over again.

Then, the real show began as he showed off his choreographed dance steps.

Miller, the second-overall pick out of Texas A&M last season, joined Reggie White, Jevon Kearse and Dwight Freeney as only the fourth player to record 11 or more sacks in his first two seasons.

His role model, though, is the late Derrick Thomas. Miller wears No. 58 as a tribute to the late Chiefs Hall of Famer and can take over a game just like Thomas used to as well.

"To be even in the same breath with that guy is humbling," Miller said. "It's about wearing '58' and playing in a way he would play."

Miller was constantly in the Chargers backfield, beating anyone they assigned to stop him. Even when Miller wasn't getting to Rivers, the quarterback was still hearing his footsteps.

Take this for instance: Late in the fourth quarter, Miller was chipped by tight end Antonio Gates and completely out of the play. Only, he quickly regained his balance enough to disrupt Rivers, who overthrew his target and into the hands of Broncos safety Jim Leonhard.

Such was the day for Rivers.

Such has been the season for the Chargers, whose postseason chances have grown even bleaker.

"We can't worry about that. We just have to go try and win a game," said Rivers, who threw two TD passes along and two interceptions. "We have to hang our hat on controlling what we can control."

The Chargers jumped out to a 7-0 lead when Manning's pass was batted up in the air and picked off by Weddle, who raced 23 yards for the score. San Diego also intercepted Manning for a score on Oct. 15 as the Chargers raced out to a 24-0 halftime lead.

But Denver scored 35 unanswered points in the second half for a 35-24 win.

This time, there were no big comebacks necessary.

Denver led 30-16 after a field goal by Matt Prater with 4:14 remaining. Danario Alexander hauled in a late 21-yard TD pass but the Chargers couldn't recover the onside kick.

"We aren't the type of team that gives up," receiver Malcom Floyd said. "All we can do is just keep chipping."

The Broncos feel the same way.

In their eyes, they've secured nothing even after winning five straight.

"Having a nice (division) lead, it's comfortable, but we need to get back at it and get better every week," Decker said. "We've got bigger goals ahead of us."

NOTES: Broncos special teams stalwart Omar Bolden suffered a concussion in the first quarter and didn't return. ... LB Nate Irving's block of Mike Scifres' punt was the first for the Broncos since Oct. 7, 2007, against the Chargers. ... Playing in his first game after missing the start of the season due to suspension, Broncos LB D.J. Williams finished with four tackles and one for a loss. "It's been so long since I've been in a live football game, be out there and be able to hit somebody," he said. ... Rex Hadnot replaced LG Tyronne Green (hamstring) in the second quarter and David Molk replaced RG Louis Vasquez, who was shaken up but returned after halftime. ... LB Larry English (leg), Jammer (calf) also got hurt.

UCLA football team wants to finally pull rank over rival 'Southern Cal'

This is UCLA's biggest game of the season.

It doesn't matter how much the team denies it, how tightly they bind themselves to football clich s. Jim Mora's coaching, as transformative as it has been, cannot erase history. And when the No. 17 Bruins step into the Rose Bowl at noon today, they face not only the Trojans, but their own recent stumbles.

UCLA (8-2, 5-2 Pacific-12 Conference) is leading the Pac-12 South right now, bearing the sort of positional strength it has not held in the conference for years. It is ranked above No. 21 USC (7-3, 5-3) heading into the Los Angeles rivalry game, something that hasn't occurred in a decade.

The Bruins will seek their first victory against their rivals since a 13-9 upset in 2006, and just their second since a win in 1998.

These are the scores from the past five years, all in the Trojans' favor: 24-7, 28-7, 28-7, 28-14 and, of course, 50-0 - a blowout so complete that USC safety T.J. McDonald no longer bothers rubbing it in the face of his brother, UCLA safety Tevin.

With a win, all that goes away.

"It means everything," Bruins senior tailback Johnathan Franklin said. "It's my last shot at it. I haven't beaten them since I've been here. It's a big rivalry. One of the biggest in college football."

There have been small changes in the week leading up to the actual game.

The USC drum major will no longer stab the midfield UCLA logo before the band's pregame show - an

image that was also scratched from a Pac-12 promotional clip a year ago.

Head coach Jim Mora has convinced the entire team to say "Southern Cal" exclusively, a minor tweak at their crosstown rivals Franklin - who grew up down the road from USC - forgot to employ earlier this week. He caught himself a second later, of course.

The Bruins even hired a team of security guards to patrol their practice fields, lest the spies who braved morning rush hour glimpse any secrets.

But the major changes don't come until UCLA proves itself on the field. The Bruins have been a different team under Mora, with an up-tempo offense keyed by redshirt freshman Brett Hundley - on his way to becoming one of the country's most exciting quarterbacks.

Nevertheless, Los Angeles belongs to USC until the Bruins wrest it back, until their fans can tweet pictures of the scoreboard as they bask and gloat.

Not an easy task, even if the Trojans aren't the indomitable powerhouse they were expected to be. A preseason No. 1 in the AP poll, USC's three blemishes include a three-point loss to Arizona - a team the Bruins rolled over 66-10.

The talent is still there, even if the results haven't been. Matt Barkley leads the conference with 13 interceptions, but is arguably still the top quarterback prospect in next spring's NFL draft. He also has two dangerous weapons at his disposal, receiving talents that Mora has come close to calling all-world.

Marqise Lee, a Heisman candidate who Mora compares to the Houston Texans' All-Pro Andre Johnson. With Robert Woods, Mora picks Chicago Bears' wideout Brandon Marshall.

Last year, the duo combined for 337 yards and four touchdowns against UCLA.

"What happened last year happened last year," Hundley said. "We're in the present. We're in the now."
