10 Simple Suggestions to Improve Your Ezine

Creating and publishing an ezine is a very important part of your online company so you want to make it the very best possible ezine you can. I have produced errors and changed and re-altered my ezine many occasions to make mbt kisumu it the very best it can be. I am nonetheless usually looking for methods to enhance MOE. Over the many years I have discovered a couple of simple methods to improve my ezine. You can easily implement these tips into your ezine.1. Always, Always have your email, alongside with your name and url correct at the leading of your ezine. Incredibly, I have read ezines where I could NOT discover the e-mail or even the name of the publisher!!! Also at the finish of your ezine have name, deal with, phone quantity, and email and url once more for easy access. Nothing is worse than attempting to discover get in touch with information that for some reason is invisible!two. Make sure you also always provide your subscribe and unsubscribe information as well. I would recommend putting this information at the bottom of the ezine. If you post your unsubscribe url right at the leading of your ezine it is like you are ????????????????? inviting your subscribers to unsubscribe.three. Provide a discussion board for your readers to interact with you ?????? ??? and your other visitors. A area entitled, Reader?s Corner or Reader?s Comments, where they can send in their comments, questions, suggestions or what ever. This gives them a opportunity to become a component of the ezine. This also helps construct the reader- publisher connection that is very essential!4. Keep your ezine clear and sharp searching. Don?t include too many of the squiggles and decorations. They might look *cute* but they occasionally make it difficult to read your ezine, therefore prompting the ole? delete finger to become activated! 5. Always provide some original content. ?????? ?????? Creating articles is a great way of performing this. If you are not yet comfortable writing articles, (Yes, you can), write an editorial in every problem. Speak a bit about yourself, the newest happenings in the company, what is going on about the internet, and so on., things of that mother nature. This is a opportunity to deliver out your character, the main thing that tends to make your ezine distinctive!!six. Having too numerous advertisements in every problem is a great way of bringing down the value of your ezine. I ?????? ?? would recommend no much more than four or 5 per problem. Reading an ezine that has twenty or thirty ads (oh yeah, I have noticed them) is not extremely interesting or practical. Most people would not even go through the entire factor. Here comes that delete finger again!! You want your advertisers to get more worth for their ??? mbt cash and having a restricted number of advertisements is 1 of the best ways of doing this.seven. I believe including a small area for this ?n that is a good idea also. Some humor, a small enjoyable, fascinating tidbits, jokes, stories, and so on. We are company men and ladies, but we do not have to be 100% business, 100% of the time!!8. Privateness Coverage ? Place a privateness coverage towards the ?????? ??? leading of ???????? the ezine. Allow your visitors know their privateness is secure with you and your ezine.9. Proofread ? Always proofread and double-examine your text. You do not want your ezine to appear like it was written by a 10 yr outdated. Right all spelling and grammatical errors.ten. Give your ezine an fascinating and pulling title. I marc by marc jacobs have subscribed to most ezines just by the title on your own. If the title gets my focus, I subscribe.Names like: Power Promotion EzineMarketing Mania EzineWeb Success Ezine are short and to the point. They also make me want to read more.Names like:Web Marketing NewsJohn Doe?s EzineHome Business News are much more generic and do not get my attention! They lack the ?oomf? that make me want to subscribe.I hope some of these tips give you an concept of how you can improve your ezine and make it the very best it can be. Remember that ezine publishing is one of the most important aspects of your online achievement. If you are in this business, you should be in a position to say, ?I have My Own Ezine! ? -) Good luck and success to you all!!

One Very, Very Happy Thanksgiving 92 Years Ago | Sears Modern ...

Thanksgiving Day - 1918 - must have been a day of great rejoicing for millions of Americans.

World War One, known then as ?The Great War? was over, officially ending on November 11, 1918. Many soldiers made it back home in time for Thanksgiving.

Yesterday, I saw the movie ?The Red Dawn? (2012 version). The best line in the movie was this: ?We inherited our freedom. Now it?s time for us to fight for it.?

The soldiers who served in The Great War fought for our freedom. And the price they paid was horrendous. It?s considered by some historians to be the bloodiest war in our nation?s history. Death tolls were staggering.

In a single battle, ?The Battle of the Somme,? more than 1.2 million soldiers died. One battle: 1,200,000 dead. Can you imagine picking up the morning paper and seeing the headline, ?1.2 million dead in fierce fighting overseas??

Britain?s Prime Minister Lloyd George described The Battle of the Somme as, ?The most gigantic, tenacious, grim, futile and bloody fight ever waged in the history of war.?

When the war ended, more than eight million soldiers were dead and 20 million were wounded.

Only four percent of the war deaths were attributed to poison gas, but the suffering inflicted by chemical warfare was unspeakable. Perhaps the most famous description of these horrors was spoken by Vera Brittain, a volunteer nurse who sat at the bedside of the sick and dying soldiers.

She wrote, ?I wish those people who write so glibly about this being a holy War, and the orators who talk so much about going on no matter how long the War lasts and what it may mean, could see a case?to say nothing of 10 cases?of mustard gas in its early stages?could see the poor things burnt and blistered all over with great mustard-coloured suppurating blisters?always fighting for breath?saying that their throats are closing?? (from her book, Testament of Youth).

The term ?basket case? came from The Great War. Due to the increased proficiency of bomb-making, soldiers sometimes became quadruple amputees. These poor souls were carried off the battlefield in a wicker basket, and their mental state was often worse than their physical state. Ever since learning that fact, I?ve never again used the term ?basket case.?

And yet the #1 cause of death was the Spanish Influenza. More than half of the American soldiers who died in The Great War died of influenza.

President Wilson promised us that it was ?The War to End All Wars.? He was wrong.

General ?Black Jack? Pershing was the commander of the American Expeditionary Force. Neither he, nor Ferdinand Foch of France (Allied Supreme Commander) were satisfied with the armistice agreement, which allowed Germany to just lay down their weapons.

Foch said this?about the?treaty: ??This isn?t peace; it is a cease-fire for 20 years.?

He was right. Twenty years later, Germany rose again and waged war against France and England.

But on Thanksgiving Day in 1918, it must have seemed like happy days had returned to the world. American dough-boys returned to their families and it was a chance for a fresh start. Due to all resources having been devoted to the war effort, housing analysts estimated that 1-2 million new housing units were needed immediately for returning soldiers.

And Sears Roebuck had just the house for them. It was after World War One that sales of kit homes skyrocketed.

And it was one year before World War Two that Sears closed their Modern Homes department once and for all.

Last year, I was systematically reading through "The Daily Press" (Newport News, VA) when I happened upon this editorial drawing. It was dated November 29, 1918. The picture above is rife with meaning. Father welcomes home two of his three sons, while Mother thinks about the boy who will not be coming home. In the window, a shaded figure is marching heavenward, perhaps pausing at the old home-place to see his earthly family one more time. On the wall, a banner is displayed with three stars, presumably two are blue (for the two boys that have just returned home) and a gold star for the young man who died in the war. The table is piled high with post-war treats, such as sugar (in short supply during the war) and milk (also hard to find in the urban areas) and bread (flour was in very short supply). The war is over and the hard times are now in the past. It's a powerful image, and one that was an accurate representation of life in that first post-war Thanksgiving. The title overhead reads, "Glory, glory, hallelujah."

Soldier

A close-up of Mother as she gazes longingly out the window. Perhaps she was striving to be grateful for the two boys that returned home. Pre-Sullivan, it was not unusual for all the sons in the family to go off to war. The five Sullivan brothers served on the USS Juneau during World War II and all five boys died when the ship was torpedoed by a Japanese sub.

*

test

It was this type of overcrowding that enabled the Spanish Influenza to spread so fast among the soldiers. It's estimated that - worldwide - about 50 million died from this highly contagious flu. The USS Lincoln was a passenger ship that was seized by the United States Government and turned into a Navy transport during World War One.

Syria rebels capture army base in eastern oil region

AMMAN (Reuters) - Syrian rebels captured an army base in an eastern oil province on Thursday, further weakening President Bashar al-Assad's control in the strategic region bordering Iraq.

The capture of the artillery base on the outskirts of Mayadeen, a town on the Euphrates river near some of Syria's main oilfields, followed rebel takeovers of military installations in the north and centre of the country this week.

Recent rebel momentum shows the increasing potency of the mainly Sunni Muslim fighters trying to topple Assad, who belongs to the Alawite minority linked to Shi'ite Islam. But insurgents have often had to retreat quickly after making advances to avoid strikes by the president's air force.

"The Mayadeen military base fell at 8.30 a.m. (0630 GMT)," Abu Laila, an official in the Military Revolutionary Council in the province, told Reuters. He said 44 rebel fighters had been killed in the operation to capture the base.

"The whole countryside, from the Iraqi border and along the Euphrates to the city of Deir al-Zor, is now under rebel control," he said.

Another opposition source in contact with rebels confirmed the base, 42 km (26 miles) south-east of Deir al-Zor, had fallen.

Video posted online showed rebels on motorcycles and trucks apparently inside the base waving victory signs as smoke rose from two buildings. Artillery pieces could be seen on the ground and a tank transporter stood abandoned.

Severe restrictions on non-state media make it impossible to verify opposition reports independently.

Activists say 38,000 people have been killed in the 20-month uprising which threatens to draw in regional Sunni and Shi'ite Muslim powers. Hundreds of thousands have fled the country and 2.5 million are displaced, aid groups say.

Western states, anxious to avoid another costly Middle East conflict and wary of backing rebels who include Islamist militants, have stayed on the sidelines, although France and Britain formally recognized a newly formed opposition coalition as the sole representative of the Syrians this month.

Russia, which along with China has blocked three resolutions which could have led to U.N. sanctions against Assad, criticized on Thursday proposals for NATO to deploy Patriot missiles in Turkey near the Syrian border.

"This would not foster stability in the region," Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said.

REBEL GAINS

The capture of the Mayadeen base leaves Assad in control of just three major army bases in Deir al-Zor province, said Sheikh Nawaf al-Bashir, a local tribal leader. He said rebels now held the main road to Iraq, from the outskirts of Deir al-Zor city to the border crossing of Albu Kamal.

The rebel move follows the capture last week of a military airport on the Iraqi border southeast of Mayadeen. In the last five days rebels have also stormed a special forces base near Aleppo, Syria's commercial hub, and an air defense position in the southern suburbs of Damascus.

In another setback for Assad, his forces pulled back on Thursday from three positions south of the town of Maarat al-Numan, on the highway linking Damascus to Aleppo, according to the opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The area has seen heavy fighting between rebel forces, which have held the town for several weeks, and soldiers camped in a nearby military base, just 500 meters from the highway.

Near Damascus, opposition campaigners said fighting continued around the south-western suburb of Daraya and the army kept up heavy bombardment of the town, where Free Syrian Army fighters appeared to be entrenched.

To the east, clashes were also reported in the Damascus neighborhood of Jobar, which is adjacent to the main Abbasid Square. A mother, her daughter and her sister's husband were killed in shelling aimed at pushing back rebels, activists said.

Rebels in the south Damascus district of Hajar al-Aswad showed video of a captured air defense officer they identified as Colonel Bashir al-Saleh, flanked by two masked rebels carrying AK47s.

So far Assad's core military units, composed mainly of members of his Alawite minority sect, have prevented a sustained rebel push into the heart of the capital itself. The rebels have yet to hold a major Syrian city.

But activists say the rebels are gaining strength in Damascus, partly because they are being joined by fighters from outlying regions. While Assad's forces control main road junctions there have been guerrilla attacks in the last few days near Damascus Airport and rebels have expanded control of the mixed urban and farmland regions around the capital.

The Observatory said army shells struck a building next to Aleppo's Dar al-Shifaa hospital on Wednesday, one of the main rebel medical centers, killing 15 people. Most of the dead were fighters but a doctor and three children also died, it said.

MEMORANDUM : Sikkim Chamber of Commerce | The Voice of Sikkim

Press Release of SCC
Ref. No.SCC/2012-13/
November 22, 2012

The Commissioner of Income Tax,
Income Tax Department,
Government of India,
Gangtok-Sikkim

M E M O R A N D U M

Sir,
The Sikkim Chamber of Commerce welcomes you to the small peaceful and beautiful state of Sikkim. As understood by us the very reason for your visit is to understand the reasons of non compliance of Indian Income tax extended in Sikkim in the year 2008. The Sikkim Chamber of commerce on behalf of all communities in Sikkim submits the under mentioned for your kind information and necessary action please.

History of Old Settlors in Sikkim.

The various communities comprising mostly of people who migrated from different parts of India have been settled in Sikkim from centuries when Sikkim was a country under the regime of Chogyal Dynasty. The then erstwhile kingdom treated all the communities equally in all aspects of life. In the year 1961, the Government of Sikkim enacted Sikkim Subject regulations Act 1961 and issued Sikkim Subject certificates to the citizens of Sikkim. The Indian citizens residing in Sikkim until April 26, 1975 chose not to obtain Sikkim Subject Certificates under the provisions of the Sikkim Subjects Regulation, 1961 as they were already citizens of India. Sikkim was a protectorate of India under the Indo-
Sikkim Treaty of 1950 under which all Indian citizens residing in Sikkim were treated at par with the Sikkimese people. There was no discrimination during the regime of the Chogyal and the Sikkim Income Tax Manual, 1948 was applicable equally to all persons residing in Sikkim until 16/06/2008 as per Circular No.2/Fin/Adm. dated 16/06/2008 issued by the Finance Department, Government of Sikkim. On 26th April 1975, Sikkim merged with India as per Article 371 (f) of the Indian constitution. The Sikkim Subject was repealed and Certificate of Identifications were issued to Sikkimese citizens and it was issued by Govt. of Sikkim. There were large number of people who were left out from becoming Indian citizen who were neither Indian nor Sikkimese, the Sikkimese Citizen having Sikkim Subject automatically became citizen of Indian, so the government through the MHA Order No.26030/36/90-IC-I dated 7/8/1990 and April 8, 1991 on the basis of MHA Order No.26030/69/88-IC-I dated 20th March 1989 with Guidelines thereto made them citizen of India and issued them Certificate of Identification. Indians were not required apply for COI as they were already Indians.

Extention of Indian Income Tax Act 1961 in Sikkim

The Indian Union extended the Income tax Act 1961 in Sikkim as per sec 10 of 26 AAA on 16/06/2008 as per Circular No.2/Fin/Adm. dated 16/06/2008 issued by the Finance Department, Govt. of India. The definition of ?Sikkimese? as explained by the act deprived us of our identity and is discriminatory towards original Indians residing in Sikkim before its merger with Indian Union. As per the definition of ?Sikkimese?, people who were neither Sikkimese nor Indian but made Indian vide MHA Order No.26030/36/90-IC-I dated 7/8/1990 and April 8, 1991 were exempted but at the same time the original Indians were denied of their legitimate rights.

Representations made by the communities so far and the outcomes

The various communities residing in Sikkim since pre merger era i.e. before 26th April 1975 have made several representations to different forums for inclusion of 400 families who are left out from the purview of Income tax exemption, the details are as under :

1. Petition in Rajya Sabha Petition Committee

A petition to seek equal rights and exemption of Income Tax and to safeguard the rights of bonafide Indian National Citizens residing in Sikkim before the merger is filed and accepted by the Rajya Sabha Petition Committee. The Committee was to visit Sikkim and conduct the hearing of affected citizens on 21st September 2011 but because of a massive earthquake in Sikkim on 18th September 2011 their visit was cancelled. The committee again was supposed to visit Sikkim on 16th of September 2012 for final hearing to reach upon conclusion but the visit was again cancelled due to imposition of code of conduct due to panchayat elections. The decision of the committee is still pending which is due any time from now.

2. Representation to Hon?ble Finance Minister, Govt. of India

A representation from the affected citizens were submitted to the then Honb?le Finance Minister vide letter on 14.12.2011 ( Annexure 1 ) and on hearing upon our grievances we were assured by him to look into the matter for consideration of Indian Income Tax exemption to the left out old settlers of Sikkim. The Honb?le Minister made a statement on record and assured in the Parliament on 12/12/2011 that ?So far as Sikkim is concerned, I am receiving representations and some representations I have already received. I am looking into it.? ( Annex-2) when the issue was raised by the Shri. S. S. Ahluwalia, Member Rajya Sabha. As informed to us the matter is under active consideration and results awaited.

3. Representation to Hon?ble Chief Minister of Sikkim, Shri Pawan Kumar Chamling

We have submitted a memorandum to the Honb?le Chief Minister of Sikkim to grant exemption of Income tax to bonafide Indian national residing in Sikkim before 26th April 1975. The State Government acting on the memorandum took following actions
a) Acknowledging our genuine demand the state government formed a committee to study the issue and make recommendations to the government. (Please see Annex-3)
b) Passed a private memo in Assembly (Please see Annex-4).
c) Passed resolution in assembly on 26/03/2011 (Please see Annex-5)
d) Made recommendations to Govt. of India and raised the issue with Honorable Prime Minister of India and the then Hon?ble Finance Minister Shri Pranab Mukherjee. (Please see Annex-6)
e) The Chief Secretary wrote a letter on 21.01.2012 to Sri Mukesh C. Joshi, Chairman Central Board of Direct Taxes, Ministry of Finance, and Govt. of India. (Please see Annex-7)
The matter is still under consideration and no parties till date has denied to grant exemption and the deliberation on the issue is at its peak.

4. Representation to Income Tax Department, Sikkim and in Siliguri
There were memorandums submitted to various IT officials but no action or even reply has been received from their end.
5. Situation of Business Communities settled in Sikkim after post merger

The extension of Indian Income Tax has not only created havoc amongst the old Settlors but it has been very difficult for the post merger business communities to adopt the act. The Income tax manual 1948 was followed until 16/06/2008 and the post merger settlers were following it for almost 33 years. The calculations were very simple. The complexity of the taxation rules as per Income Tax Act 1961 has to be well taught to all for successful implementation of same. Moreover large numbers of businessman have already paid their taxes upto the financial year ending March, 2008 under Sikkim Income Tax manual to the Government of Sikkim. Since decades the business communities have been running their businesses in Sikkim as Hindu Undivided Family (HUF), everything is in the name of Head of the family. The assets and income actually belong to all members of the family. No tax planning has been done as it is done in other parts of the country.

Sir, in view of above facts and considering the complexities of the issues involved we request and suggest you that :

a) All matters pertaining to Central Income Tax for pre merger business communities i.e. a person residing in Sikkim prior to 26th April 1975 be kept in abeyance until the matter and demands from the affected citizens to the various
forums as stated above is resolved. The community at large is waiting for its long pending demands made to the concerned authorities and final conclusion from there end is still awaited. It is also submitted that the issue here is not related to Income Tax but is demand for their legitimate rights and to safeguard their identity.

b) For successful implementation and acceptance of Indian Income tax amongst the post merger residents of Sikkim, the Sikkim Chamber of Commerce suggests that the same should be implemented from a prospective date i.e. 01/04/2013. In the meantime proper training and guidance be provided to them by creating a conducive atmosphere and by conducting seminars and camps to educate them.

We heartily appreciate the gesture of your esteemed department for conducting such a meeting with the public to identify their problems and grievances and we expect the same gesture in future as well.

Thanking you,
With warm regards,

(Ashok Sarda)
President
Sikkim Chamber of Commerce

Illinois may give driver's licenses to illegal immigrants

By Mary Wisniewski, Reuters

Illinois may soon become the most populous U.S. state to grant a form of driver's licenses to illegal immigrants, after the nation's growing Hispanic population boosted the power of Democrats in national and state elections on November 6.

A bipartisan group of Illinois politicians announced on Tuesday they would propose such a law when the legislature convenes on November 27.?

Washington state and New Mexico are the only states that currently allow illegal immigrants to get licenses. Utah allows driving permits. As the fifth most populous state, Illinois would be the biggest state to adopt such a law.?

A California law that allows immigrants with federal work permits to receive driver's licenses will take effect January 1, 2013.?
Supporters said the law would be good for public safety, allowing Illinois immigrant motorists to get tested on their driving skills and buy insurance.?

"When you have a quarter of a million undocumented drivers on the road, it's definitely a safety concern," said Ron Holmes, spokesman for Illinois Senate President John Cullerton, who is backing the measure along with fellow Democrats Illinois Governor Pat Quinn and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel.?

Former Illinois Governor Jim Edgar, a popular Republican, joined Democrats at a news conference in Chicago Tuesday to support the idea, as did Republican State Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka. It also has the support of the powerful House Speaker, Chicago Democrat Michael Madigan, giving it a good chance of passage.?

The drive to pass the law follows the re-election of Democratic President Barack Obama, Democratic gains in the U.S. Senate and in the Illinois legislature with strong Hispanic support.?

Since 2010, a handful of Republican-led states, notably border state Arizona, passed laws cracking down on illegal immigrants. But after this year's election, which saw an estimated 66 percent of Hispanics vote for Obama, Democrats and Republicans have said they want to work on an overhaul of federal immigration law.?

Illinois, like California, elected a veto-proof Democratic supermajority in the legislature this month, with Democrats now controlling all branches of government.?

Unlicensed, uninsured drivers are involved in almost 80,000 accidents in Illinois each year, resulting in $660 million in damage, according to the Illinois Highway Safety Coalition. Unlicensed immigrant drivers cost $64 million in damage claims alone.?

The Safety Coalition said on its website that since New Mexico made the change in 2003, the rate of uninsured motorists fell from 33 percent to under 9 percent.?

New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez, a Republican, has fought to outlaw such licenses since she took office in January 2011. She has argued that the state's law encouraged people to come to New Mexico from other states just to obtain driver's licenses.?
Holmes said supporters of the Illinois measure are talking with law enforcement officials to make sure a license for undocumented immigrants would not be used for fraud.?

The measure would expand to undocumented immigrants Illinois' existing temporary visitor driver's license, used by legal immigrants. The licenses are "visually distinct" from ordinary licenses, with a purple background and the words "not valid for identification" on the front, explained Lawrence Benito, chief executive of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights.?

"This is a practical, commonsense approach," said Benito. He said supporters have been talking with Republicans in the legislature to try to get their support.?

According to the 2010 U.S. Census, the number of Latinos in Illinois was over 2 million, or nearly 16 percent of the population.?
Republicans in Illinois who have objected to the proposed law in the past could not be reached for comment.

Weather, airport strikes loom as 43 million hit the road

As more than 43 million Americans gear up this morning for the busiest travel day of the year, inclement weather and airport strikes may put a damper on Thanksgiving travels for some.

Approximately 39 million of today's travelers are hitting the road by car and the weather may be kind for those on highways around most of the country.

Those in the Pacific Northwest will have to brace for a soggy ride, as up to 10 inches of rain fell in parts of Oregon, up to 9 inches in Washington, and 6.5 inches in Northern California. In Oregon, this was in some parts one of the top rainiest storms ever. A third storm system is moving through the West today producing more rain, but it will not be as heavy as Monday's rainfall.

Motorists along the East Coast can look forward to a smooth ride, as most of the weather looks calm from New York to Atlanta, with mild with temperatures in the 50s in the Northeast and near 70 in Georgia.

Traffic, unsurprisingly, will not be quite as breezy, with family-filled cars expected to clog roads from coast to coast.

Dense fog that rolled into the Chicago last night, combined with a light wind, clearing skies and a moist air mass is now causing traffic delays across the area.

The top five cities bracing for the worst traffic today are: New York, Washington D.C, Chicago, San Francisco, and the most tangled roads will be in Los Angeles, with holiday road trips predicted to take 33 percent longer than usual.

And that's not the only headache in Los Angeles. Airport union workers are preparing to strike this morning at LAX. The workers, who are angry over terminated union contracts and eliminated health insurance, admit they could not have picked a worse day or a busier airport.

"It's a national day about being with your family and taking care of your family, and these workers are not able to do that," Andrew Gross Gaitan of the Seiu United Service Workers West said.

Job actions are not just in California ? angry workers are picketing coast-to-coast: from Chicago's O'Hare airport... to New York's JFK to Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

For those hitting the highway today, AAA recommends leaving as early as possible, and at the latest 2 .p.m., because by 5 p.m. the roads will be jam packed. Rush hour is expected to peak two hours earlier than normal.

"With today expected to be the busiest day, and many people also working, we're expecting this evening there will be a lot of congestion," AAA spokeswoman Heather Hunter said.

There is, however a silver lining for motorists, as gas prices are down 5 cents in the last two weeks, with the national average for a gallon of regular fuel topping off at $3.41.

Iran's president welcomes Hamas-Israel ceasefire: report

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Iran's president welcomed the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel but expressed reservations about its effectiveness, a Pakistani television station, which interviewed him on Thursday, reported.

"President (Mahmoud) Ahmadinejad said the cruelty in Gaza should unite Muslims. He said he welcomes the ceasefire between Hamas and Israel, but he seems to not be very optimistic about the ceasefire," a TV anchor for the station said.

A ceasefire between Israel and Gaza's Hamas rulers took hold on Thursday after eight days of conflict, although deep mistrust on both sides cast doubt on how long the Egyptian-sponsored deal can last.

Iran, which has an alliance with Hamas, has regarded Israeli strikes as "organized terrorism". The exiled leader of Hamas, Khaled Meshaal, on Wednesday thanked Shi'ite Iran for what he described as arms and funding.

"(Israel) has been occupying Palestine for decades under false pretensions. Today, the oppressed people of Gaza have become the victims of these expansionist policies and atrocities," Ahmadinejad said at a summit of developing countries in Islamabad.

Can Nanoparticles Kill Colorectal Cancer Cells?

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.?Researchers at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center have modified electrically-conductive polymers, commonly used in solar energy applications, to develop revolutionary polymer nanoparticles (PNs) for a medical application. When the nanoparticles are exposed to infrared light, they generate heat that can be used to kill colorectal cancer cells.

The study was directed by assistant professor of plastic and reconstructive surgery, Nicole Levi-Polyachenko, PhD, and done in collaboration with colleagues at the Center for Nanotechnology and Molecular Materials at Wake Forest University. This study was recently published online, ahead of print, in the journal, Macromolecular Bioscience (DOI: 10.1002/mabi.201200241).

Levi-Polyachenko and her team discovered a novel formulation that gives the polymers two important capabilities for medical applications: the polymers can be made into nanoparticles that are easily dispersed in water and generate a lot of heat when exposed to infrared light.

Results of this study showed that when colorectal cancer cells incubated with the PNs were exposed to five minutes of infrared light, the treatment killed up to 95 percent of cells. ?The results of this study demonstrate how new medical advancements are being developed from materials science research," said Levi-Polyachenko.

The team made polymer nanoparticles and showed that they could undergo repeated cycles of heating and cooling without affecting their heating ability. This offers advantages over metal nanoparticles, which can melt during photothermal treatments, leading to a loss of heating efficiency. This also allows for subsequent treatments to target cells that are resistant to heat-induced killing.

What Is the Human T-Cell Lymphotropic Virus? - Lymphoma ...

The Human T-Cell Lymphotropic Virus (HTLV) was the very first retrovirus ever discovered by scientists (a retrovirus is only composed of RNA but it uses a special enzyme to produce DNA before inserting itself into the host's broader genome). Previously it was believed that human retroviruses didn't exist.

Today there are four known Human T-Cell Lymphotropic Viruses, labeled chronologically by discovery simply as HTLV-1, HTLV-2, HTLV-3, and HTLV-4.

HTLV-1 was discovered in a patient who had been diagnosed with a cutaneous T-cell lymphoma in 1979. In 1981 HTLV-2 was discovered in a patient diagnosed with hairy cell leukemia.

In 1983, scientists believed they had discovered HTLV-3?but that discovery turned out to be a retrovirus from a different taxonomic genus and today is well-known as HIV.

HTLV-3 and HTLV-4 were only discovered recently, in 2005. Little is known or understood about either virus.

Human T-Cell Lymphotropic Virus-1

Thus far, the most important of the four HTL viruses remains the first one discovered, HTLV-1. This virus is highly concentrated among populations in parts of Japan, Africa, the Caribbean islands and South America.

The HTLV-1 virus is transmitted via three major routes:

  • Breast milk from mother to child
  • Sexual intercourse
  • Blood transfusions

The virus has been proven via epidemiology to be the primary causative agent in at least four diseases: adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL), HTLV-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP), HTLV-associated uveitis, and infective dermatitis.

Adult T-cell Leukemia/lymphoma (ATL)

Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) is a very rare and highly aggressive lymphoid cancer that has been strongly linked to infection by the HTLV-1 virus. However, of the millions believed to be carriers of the virus, only a very small minority will develop this cancer. It is not currently known who among the carriers will develop the disease or why. While some therapeutic regimens have been tested against the disease, they have been met with limited success; rather, many researchers are focused on preventing viral transmission as a matter of public health policy among high-risk populations.

(Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma has also been classified into four subtypes, but that is beyond the scope of this entry. For more information on these subtypes, see Tsukasaki K. Adult T-cell leukemia-lymphoma. Hematology. 2012 Apr;17 Suppl 1:S32-5.)
