Ducks rebound with 48-24 win over Beavers

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) ? After Oregon's loss to Stanford last weekend, running back Kenjon Barner figured there were three ways for the Ducks to respond in the Civil War against Oregon State.

"You can let it define you, destroy you or strengthen you," Barner said. "With this team, every loss we've taken in the past, it's strengthened us, made us stronger. Looking back on Stanford, it was a loss. We knew what we had to do to get back on the winning track, and we did it."

Barner ran for 198 yards and two touchdowns ? despite leaving the game for a time with what he called a minor injury ? and No. 5 Oregon defeated No. 16 Oregon State 48-24 in the Civil War.

The victory initially kept the Ducks (11-1, 8-1) alive for a spot in the Pac-12 title game, but Stanford defeated UCLA 35-17 later Saturday night to clinch the league's northern division.

Stanford's 17-14 overtime victory over the Ducks last Saturday meant that both teams finished the regular season with just one conference loss, but the Cardinal (10-2, 8-1) claimed the head-to-head matchup to advance to the championship game ? a rematch with the Bruins ? next Friday.

The Civil War ended shortly before the game between Stanford and UCLA started. Barner wasn't planning to watch it.

"I'm going to enjoy this win, have fun with my family that's here and find out tomorrow what the situation is," he said. "I'd rather not watch."

It was Oregon's fifth straight victory in the 116-game rivalry series with the Beavers.

While the Civil War is normally the season finale for both teams, Oregon State (8-3, 6-3) will host Nicholls State next Saturday in a matchup that was supposed to open the season but was put off when Hurricane Isaac bore down on the Colonels' Thibodaux, La., campus.

The Beavers will have to wait to find out where they're headed for a bowl game, but already their season can be counted a success after they went just 3-9 last year.

Barner appeared to hurt either his abdomen or ribs late in the first half and headed to the locker room. He returned after the break, but much of the work went to De'Anthony Thomas until he returned on a scoring drive that made it 41-17 early in the fourth quarter.

Barner would only describe the injury as minor.

Thomas finished with 122 yards rushing and three scores. Oregon redshirt freshman Marcus Mariota threw for 140 yards and a score, and also ran for 85 yards and a touchdown.

Sean Mannion threw for 311 yards and a late touchdown for the Beavers but was intercepted four times. Storm Woods rushed for 70 yards and two scores.

Mannion started the first four games of the season, throwing seven touchdowns and averaging 339 yards, but injured his left knee and required surgery. Vaz, who hadn't started since high school, took over and helped the Beavers to win in the next two games, and later became the team's starter.

But Vaz sprained his left ankle in the final moments of a loss to Stanford two weeks ago, and sat out last Saturday during Oregon State's 64-14 victory at home over California. Mannion got the nod for the Civil War.

"We have another opponent and we don't have time to pout and feel sorry for ourselves," Mannion said. "Nicholls State is going to come in here and try to beat us, and we have to prepare accordingly. I think it will be a good thing because I know everyone is hurting about this one, especially the seniors.

Attendance was 47,249 fans, a Reser Stadium record.

Oregon put the Stanford loss behind them by striking quickly on their first possession with Mariota's 42-yard keeper. The touchdown drive took just 1:46, but the Ducks' 2-point try to cap it off failed.

The Beavers took a 7-6 lead on Woods' 7-yard touchdown run, but the Ducks answered on the next series with Thomas' 2-yard TD dash. Barner added a 1-yard scoring run before he was hurt.

Stanford held Barner to 66 yards the week before, but he had 141 yards before halftime against the Beavers. With his first 15 yards rushing Saturday, he moved past Derek Loville (1986-89) for second on Oregon's career rushing list.

Trevor Romaine kicked a 36-yard field goal to narrow it to 20-10 at halftime and the Beavers pulled closer with Woods' 2-yard scoring run on their first series of the second half.

It was all Ducks the rest of the way. Thomas scored on a 6-yard run to extend Oregon's lead to 27-17, before the Ducks capitalized on a Beaver fumble that led to Thomas' 29-yard touchdown run. Barner returned with his 1-yard run and Mariota found B.J. Kelley with a 2-yard touchdown pass.

Mannion hit Micah Hatfield with a 6-yard touchdown pass with 20 seconds left for the final margin.

While Barner was spending time with his family, Oregon coach Chip Kelly was going to be watching Saturday night to see what happened elsewhere in the Pac-12 and beyond.

"You got to pay attention," Kelly said. "You got to know if you're practicing tomorrow."

Even though the Ducks are missing out on the Pac-12 championship game, there is a good chance that at 11-1 they will be an at-large bid for a BCS bowl game.

The Ducks hold a 60-46-10 advantage in the Civil War which began in 1894 and is the seventh-most contested rivalry in the nation.

It was the fourth time that both teams were ranked for the Civil War. The last was in 2009, when Oregon was No. 7 and Oregon State was No. 13. That game was dubbed the "War of the Roses" because the winner was guaranteed a Rose Bowl berth. Oregon won 37-33.

Kettleman City activists seek to block expansion of toxic dump

KETTLEMAN CITY, Calif. ? Environmental activists and leaders of this impoverished community, outraged by unreported spills of cancer-causing chemicals, are trying to block expansion of a toxic waste dump that is the largest of its kind west of the Mississippi River.

Activists say the history of the troubled Chemical Waste Management dump and new citations alleging failure to report 72 hazardous materials spills over the last four years show the company cannot be trusted to protect public health. The state Department of Toxic Substances Control issued the citations earlier this month ? and is the agency that must rule on the proposed expansion.

"If this new case is not enough to demonstrate a pattern and practice of violations, I don't know what else the agency would need to see," said Ingrid Brostrom, an attorney with the Center on Race, Poverty and the Environment. The 1,600-acre dump is just off Interstate 5 in Central California.

PHOTOS: Kettleman City's toxic spills

Company officials say the 30-year-old landfill is among the most heavily regulated and monitored facilities of its kind, overseen by nearly a dozen state and federal agencies. During a recent tour of the facility, Bob Henry, Chemical Waste senior district manager, said the spills in question were small, caused by third parties and cleaned up on the site.

State regulators "are simply saying we were supposed to report the spills verbally and with a written report," Henry said. "Is this a major issue? No."

Brian Johnson, the state agency's deputy director of enforcement, disagreed. "It is very serious," he said. "We view these violations as consistent with a troubling pattern and emblematic of a system failure on Chemical Waste's part."

Residents of this close-knit community of 1,500, most of them low-income farmworkers, have long distrusted the facility 3.2 miles from the city. They believe the dump, the only one in California licensed to accept carcinogenic polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, is responsible for serious illnesses, birth defects and deaths among children.

A survey by state health investigators ruled out the dump as the reason 11 babies were born with illnesses including cleft palates and other physical deformities in Kettleman City between September 2007 and March 2010. Three of the babies died.

Despite those findings, many residents blame the landfill. This month, the city has rallied around Ivonne Rangel, whose 2-year-old son Daniel died of leukemia Nov. 12.

Standing last week beside a living-room shrine composed of cheery portraits of her son, fresh roses, toys, rosary beads and candles, Rangel said, "The first thing that came to my mind after my son was diagnosed with aggressive leukemia was that toxic waste dump.

"They say there is no connection between our sick children and the dump, but that is a big lie," Rangel said, her eyes filled with tears.

Family and friends held a memorial service and funeral for the boy several days ago.

Maria Saucedo, whose daughter, Ashley, was born with a cleft palate and other ailments and died at 11 months, said she felt "offended and let down by a system that would even consider expanding the dump after all the legal problems and children born with defects."

Chemical Waste officials say the facility is running out of room. With less available space, the company has reduced the amount of hazardous materials it receives from throughout the state to roughly 120,000 tons a year. About 1% of that is PCBs, which are found in electrical transformers, voltage regulators and additives to lubricating and cutting oils.

In 1985, the Environmental Protection Agency fined the company $2.1 million for violations that included operating additional landfills and waste ponds without authorization.

In 2003, the waste dump was among 22 such facilities that California EPA officials determined emitted unusually high levels of radiation.

In 2005, the company was fined $10,000 for violating federal PCB monitoring requirements. It was cited again in 2007 for failing to properly analyze incoming wastes, storm water runoff and leachate for PCBs, and for failing to properly calibrate analytical equipment.

In 2010, the EPA levied a $302,100 fine against the facility for failing to properly manage PCBs. A year later, the facility agreed to pay $400,000 in fines and spend $600,000 on laboratory upgrades needed to properly manage hazardous materials.

Maricela Mares-Alatorre, an activist with Greenaction for Health and Environmental Justice and a Kettleman City mother of two, said activists hope the latest citations will be "an eye-opener for state regulators."

WooCommerce ? excelling eCommerce 1.6.5.2

The Lowdown:
Well I started a new on line business for my kid and decided that I would use this e commerce plugin for it due to all I had heard and seen. Wile it is pretty straight forward to setup and easy to use. I did find it missing some of the great features in WP ecommerce, I needed a couple of different options for shipping and payment that are not available without adding a plugin that cost a bit extra.

In fact as good as this plugin is most of the features that make it good are additional priced plugins

The Lowdown:
This plugin was to offer an interesting way for getting people to share you in their social networks, you set it to offer them a discount say 10% if they tweet or facebook their shopping cart. The discount was to be applied right as soon as the tweet of facebook post was made..
While this plugins was a great idea in theory, I found it to be a pain for my use, it would not layout correctly and it would not work correctly seems they have a ways to go. I will revisit it after they do an upgrade

Trust Is The Key in Building Business Relationships | Sphinx Web ...

Trust is a key element in building business relationships with potential customers. The Internet is a great way to begin to build that trust. The days when your business could depend on finding new customers simply by placing an ad in the Yellow Pages are long gone. Today?s customers are more particular than ever about the brands they buy and the only way to really market to them is through trust.

The Internet provides many tools that can help you in building business relationships based on trust with potential customers.

1. Let?s Get Social!

Social media is a key communication platform in building relationships in business. Let?s think about it ? social media allows people to have conversations with friends, family and even brands. If used correctly, you can build trust in your business using tools like Twitter and Facebook.

A few suggestions I must include: Try jumping into existing conversations to re-direct the dialogue. Everyone always has something to say. That?s what social media is for. Intercept. Jump in and say a word or two. Ask and answer questions in building business relationships. Don?t stick to business! Please don?t or they will be running the other way. Be personable to show the human side of you and your company. Respond in a timely manner to any comments on your profile. I know we get tied up in our busy lives, but try to respond and engage.

2. Building Business Relationships

Blog your butt off. Let?s say that you are in the business of selling purses, as are a number of competitors. Let?s say you sell your purses for the same price as your competitors. Let?s think, how can a customer choose your brand if all are virtually the same? All things being equal, if a customer finds your blog on fashion and accessories and enjoys reading it, she will choose your purses over a competitor who does not blog.

Why? You have established a degree of trust, simply by providing content your customer finds informative. Sometimes a blog is the only differentiator between you and the competition, so use it wisely.

A few more suggestions: try to blog on topics that your target audience cares about. Address their questions and concerns and solve their problems.

Always share your blog content through social media, e-mail and your website. Also, always respond to comments on your blog posts while keeping content fresh a couple of times a week with photos and videos to make posts more appealing.

3. Connect with Bloggers

Partnering with bloggers who already love your product and/or fit your target demographic is a great way to build trust. Blogger outreach helps your business connect with an influential member of the online community and the blogger, in turn, will tell readers about your products.

Typically, blogger outreach involves giving your products to a blogger in exchange for a review on their blog.

Sometimes the blogger may only want the product in compensation. More suggestions? Try to multiply your efforts by reaching out to several bloggers in your target audience. Quickly find bloggers already talking about your brand through social media. Next, partner with them by advertising on the blog as well as writing a few blog posts.

4. Stay on Top of People?s Minds with Email Correspondence

Another effective online trust-building business relationships tool is e-mail. By sending out a monthly e-mail, your business will be easy to remember. Then, when subscribers are ready to buy, your brand is the first that they think of.

Provide value in your newsletter. Try to include informative articles that can make the difference between a subscriber opening your e-mail and deleting it.

5. Suggestions, Suggestions

Create a compelling subject line for your newsletter to ensure subscribers open your e-mails.

Try including a subscription widget on your website and blog so people can sign up for your newsletter.

Offer a freebie ? something to offer as a reward for signing up for the newsletter.

Track which e-mails get the best response, then duplicate them. You always want to keep a tally. I usually keep an Excel sheet handy to document the successful topics.

Remember trust in building business relationships takes time, similar to building trust in personal relationships. Don?t worry about pushing for a sale; with trust marketing, the sale will come if you if you work at developing a relationship with potential customers.

The Importance of Editing Film and TV Production - Bobby Bose ...

To the uninitiated, editing may look like a monotonous task that is both mentally as well as physically taxing.

In fact, the film editor has the job identical to a cook.

The importance of editing dates back ages, chronicled in the book "The Technique Of Film And Video Editing" by Ken Dancyger. It upholds some of the finest examples of editing imparting the narrative of the film through silent shots, music and jump shots involving ordinary objects. Alfred Hitchcock's filmmaking (in films like 'Vertigo' and 'The Man Who Knew Too Much') is considered to have some of the finest editing work by the erstwhile standards, and can easily exemplify why editing is considered so integral to the success of a film or TV production.

In the earlier ages, editing was physically done, with the help of mechanical equipment that sliced, spliced and appropriately put together 'linearly' edited reels. The digital revolution and technological advances like the Firewire have magically simplified the post-production process. With software applications like Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro and Windows Movie Maker, editing is not restricted to professionally trained editors and apprentices. The ease of use and interactive applications has made it possible for film students, amateurs and one-time users to edit their own film or video productions.

The advent of computers has also allowed editors to enhance the creativity of their work. Unlike the mechanical equipment which was used on the original reel and did not warrant a liberal creative license or room for error to the editor, digital editing offers a huge scope for improvisation. The latter has opened up avenues for experimentation, much better treatment and quick editing procedures. Off late, films have been centered on editing and the whole post-production process, rather than the filming of the same. Recent examples can include 'The Lord of the Rings Trilogy' and 'Avatar', the latter incidentally being the highest revenue-grossing films of all time!

With technology advancing in the speed of light-years, editing in film and TV production has gained a pivotal role. And every filmmaking unit, irrespective of size, style, location or budget, has already acknowledged the same!

New York triple-murder suspect posed as retired cop: neighbors

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Neighbors of the man charged with murdering three New York shopkeepers of Middle Eastern descent described him on Friday as a self-styled "tough guy" who affected a fake Italian accent and claimed to be retired detective.

"He was the kind of guy who you could tell had watched 'The Godfather' too many times,'' said Ben Elchonen, who lives in the same Queens apartment building where murder suspect Salvatore Perrone, 64, often stayed with a girlfriend.

Police say Perrone, an independent clothing salesman who is divorced and owns a home in the city's Staten Island borough, began his killing spree on July 6 when he shot Mohamed Gebeli, 65, in his Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, clothing store.

On August 2, Isaac Kadare, 59, was killed in his Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, budget items store. On November 16, Rahmatollah Vahidipour, 78, was gunned down in a women's clothing boutique in Brooklyn.

Perrone was identified after police circulated a picture taken from a security camera near the scene of the third attack.

A rifle and .22 caliber ammunition consistent with shell casings found at the crime scenes were discovered in a duffel bag Perrone was seen carrying in the surveillance video, police said.

An attorney who represented Perrone at his arraignment could not immediately be reached for comment.

Perrone was charged with three counts of murder and three counts of criminal possession of a weapon. He pleaded not guilty to the charges on Thursday.

Perrone told police he was affiliated with the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency, according to the New York Post. A New York police spokesman could not be reached for comment on Friday.

Elchonen, 26, said Perrone gave the impression of playing the role of a cop, once questioning him as to why he was on the building's roof and telling him "we've gotten reports of someone throwing eggs."

"He acted like a tough guy, but he wasn't at all,'' Elchonen said. "He spoke with this heavy Italian accent, but you could tell he was playing a part, playing a role."

Bryan Gibbs, 33, who grew up near Perrone's Staten Island home, said Perrone "speaks 100 percent fluent, northeastern English.

"He has no accent whatsoever."

Gibbs said Perrone told him he was a retired detective, and for years patrolled the neighborhood, taking notes on neighbors' homes and calling in minor violations to the city buildings department.

"He is completely unhinged,'' Gibbs said. "When I was in high school I'd come home at one and two in the morning and (Perrone) would be sitting on a lawn chair in the middle of the street - not on his property, in the middle of the street - wearing a beret and drinking a bottle of wine or a six pack of beer, and just staring up at his house. It was insane."

Investigators said they have yet to determine a clear motive for why Perrone would have carried out the attacks, which occurred near closing time when the victims were alone in their shops.

6 Conditions that Contribute to Hospitalization | Elder Care Blog

While a number of factors can contribute to a senior?s readmission to a hospital after being transitioned home, there are six common conditions that are the most prevalent causes:

  1. Arthritis
  2. Congestive Heart Failure
  3. Diabetes
  4. Myocardial Infarction (Heart Attack)
  5. Pneumonia
  6. Comorbidity

Arthritis

home care servicesArthritis is a chronic disease, which is characterized by more than 100 conditions that primarily affect a body?s joints. Some of the most common forms are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia and gout. The chances of getting arthritis, especially osteoarthritis, which is caused by the deterioration of a joint?s cartilage, increases with age, making it likely that a senior may suffer from the disease?s effects.

Some with osteoarthritis have knee or hip replacement surgery to help relieve the pain in their joints. Others use medication and lifestyle changes such as exercise and a proper diet to ease their symptoms.

But seniors with arthritis who have just completed a hospital stay and who live alone may have difficulty caring for themselves, particularly in areas of?medication?and?nutrition management, as well as getting the exercise they need to ease their symptoms. If a senior misses needed doses of medications and becomes weak from poor nutrition, he could end up with setbacks and be readmitted to the hospital.

Congestive Heart Failure

Congestive heart failure occurs when the heart is no longer able to pump blood throughout the body. It can be caused by narrowed arteries, high blood pressure, problems stemming from a heart attack, stroke, infection of the heart, and other factors. The symptoms of congestive heart failure generally include fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, swollen legs and ankles, reduced appetite, nausea and weight gain. Congestive heart failure is a progressive disorder that affects the heart, lungs and kidneys.

Aging plays a large role in the risk of congestive heart failure, and the prevalence of heart failure approximately doubles with each decade of life. Congestive heart failure is one of the most common reasons for hospital readmissions. If you notice any of the symptoms mentioned above, you should contact your loved one?s doctor right away.

Diabetes

Diabetes is a group of diseases characterized by high blood glucose levels due to a lack of insulin. Diabetes is present in over one quarter of seniors age 65 and older, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention?s National Diabetes Fact Sheet. People who are over age 45, overweight or obese and physically inactive also increase their chances of getting diabetes. Diabetes can cause sight and hearing loss, nerve damage, and high blood pressure.

According to the article ?Diabetic Foot Ulcers: Prevention, Diagnosis and Classification? in?American Family Physician, foot complications are the most frequent reason for hospitalization in people with diabetes, accounting for up to 25 percent of all diabetic admissions in the United States and Great Britain.

Making sure that your senior loved one leads a lifestyle that includes a healthy diet, exercise and strength training, and proper medication and insulin routines may help to limit complications from diabetes. Research presented in the?Lower Extremity Review?article ?Exercise and Neuropathy: Not mutually exclusive? also shows that weight-bearing exercise does not increase the risk for foot ulcers, and that those people who were the most active actually reduced their risk for ulceration.

If you need some help, senior care agencies can provide assistance with making sure you senior gets exercise and proper nutrition. Many also provide transportation to activities and can help with grocery shopping.

Myocardial Infarction (Heart Attack)

If your senior loved one suffered a myocardial infarction ? also called a heart attack ? she has much to consider when returning home from the hospital including: keeping and getting to follow-up doctors? appointments and medical tests; properly taking medications; eating a healthy diet; getting to a rehabilitation program and more. Sadly, according to the US National Library of Medicine, having one heart attack increases one?s likelihood of having another episode.

The US National Library of Medicine suggests to prevent another heart attack, and thus readmission to the hospital, a senior needs to do the following:

  • Keep blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol under control
  • Don?t smoke
  • Eat a heart-healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and low in animal fat
  • Get plenty of exercise, at least 30 minutes a day, at least 5 days a week (talk to the doctor first)
  • Get checked and treated for depression
  • Limit alcohol intake to no more than one drink a day for women, and no more than two drinks a day for men
  • Stay at a healthy weight

All of this might seem like a lot of work, but it is vital to maintaining a senior?s good health and staying out of the hospital. As a caregiver you can help in many ways, but be sure to inquire with the senior?s doctors or discharge coordinators if you have questions about getting some outside assistance.

Pneumonia

Pneumonia is a serious condition that occurs when fluids accumulate in the air sacs causing irritation and inflammation in the lungs. As this occurs, blood and cells do not receive the oxygen required for proper function. Pneumonia can affect one or both lungs and can be caused by exposure to bacteria, viruses, irritants or exposure to chemicals. Since the elderly can often have chronic lung problems, the condition may be harder to detect, especially if a senior is already weakened from a previous hospital stay.

Seniors don?t always exhibit classic pneumonia symptoms such as chills, shortness of breath and chest pain. In fact, many elderly sufferers, particularly those just released from the hospital, often show no symptoms because their immune response may already be in a somewhat weakened state. Seniors may also have a lower than normal temperature versus a high temperature. Other signs of pneumonia in seniors include confusion, disorientation, severe weakness and bleeding or discoloration of the lips and nail beds.

According to the National Institutes of Health, pneumonia is one of the ten leading causes of death for persons over the age of 65. It is vital that you monitor your loved one for pneumonia symptoms and call the doctor if you suspect a senior?s health is off. Doing so can keep a senior healthy and risk free.

Comorbidity

Comorbidity is the simultaneous presence of two or more conditions or diseases in the same person, which may complicate her situation. For example, if a senior has congestive heart failure she is particularly vulnerable to infection, especially pneumonia and influenza. An infection can aggravate the underlying heart disease and could lead to rapid, frequent recurrences of the congestive heart failure, which could then result in readmission back to the hospital.

Discharge from the hospital is a critical transition point in your loved one?s care especially if he has multiple comorbidities. Be sure to ask several questions of the senior?s discharge coordinator so that you can make sure to be watch forwarning signs?and be ready to help manage them.

It may seem a daunting task to have to watch for all of these conditions and their various warning signs but doing so can mean the difference between a senior?s full recovery, a setback or worse. And always remember to take good care of yourself. Be sure to eat right, rest and engage in activities that you enjoy.?Being a healthy caregiver?is good for you and an even greater gift to your loved one.
