20-Something & Living at Home | World of Psychology

20-Something & Living at HomeIt?s hardly breaking news that young adults are living at home longer.

Of course there are exceptions, but it appears that the idea of leaving the nest immediately following college graduation is long gone.

The current economy makes establishing financial independence a difficult feat. From a sociological perspective, extended mooching off Mom and Dad seems to be trending. Many young adults either are saving the money they do have, basking in domestic convenience, or simply waiting for the right living opportunity.

Overall, it seems they?re just not ready to take the next step.

A 2010 article in the New York Times Magazine features insight from Jeffrey Jensent Arnett, a psychology professor at Clark University. Arnett deems the 20s as a stage called ?emerging adulthood.? He points to cultural shifts that led to the creation of this new phase of life: young people feeling less rushed to marry because of the acceptance of premarital sex; young women delaying pregnancy due to more career options and reproductive technology; the need for additional education in our information-based economy; and fewer entry-level jobs available after all those years of schooling.

?Approximately 51 million Americans live in multigenerational households,? stated a May 2012 article in Forbes.

?Twenty-nine percent of 25-34 year-olds have taken shelter Chez Mom and Dad during the Great Recession and with almost 80% satisfied with this arrangement, the impetus to get their own pad ASAP just isn?t there.?

According to the Forbes piece, moving out has become a phenomenon that needs to be approached with caution. Alice Karekezi, a writer for Salon, asserts that living at home longer is now viewed as a practical choice.

?Now to become a qualified professional, many middle-class American kids are going to have to spend many years in completely unpaid internships,? Karekezi said. ?So they finish college, or in the course of going to college, they spend years upon years working in jobs that used to pay money and don?t anymore because this market is so crowded. You?ve got to live some place. So in households that can afford it, parents are making it possible for their kids to gather credentials that will allow them someday ? they hope ? to launch at the level they?re expecting.?

However, since 50 percent of college grads are unemployed or underemployed, a change may not be on the horizon in the near future.

A June 2012 article in the New York Post cites 20-somethings who are still living at home, even if they?re capable of striking out on their own. Jason Siegel graduated from LaFayette College a couple of years ago and was able to secure a job in Manhattan starting at $50,000. Although he?s well employed (and has a serious girlfriend, who could be a potential roommate), he still chooses to stay where he is. ?I didn?t want to start a new job and move at the same time,? he said. ?It was too much transition, two huge changes at once.?

Convenience appears to be an additional rationale for not running out the door as readily. Another ?gainfully employed? 23-year-old told the Post that living at home simply spawned a higher quality of life. ?I can travel without worrying about money. I can go out to not the cheapest dinners often. I don?t have to think, ?Is this dinner next week?s rent???

Living at home longer seems to be a sociological trend within ?emerging adulthood,? as well as a byproduct of our times and how the Gen Y?s are coping with its unpredictability. To put a positive spin on the pattern, I?ll even say this 20-something generation is patient. It takes patience to achieve financial independence and patience to create a well-thought-out plan before leaving.

In ?Occupy Mom and Dad?s House,? personal trainer Amanda Shugar stated that she?s been mentally preparing herself for moving out. ?It?s a scary thing,? she said.

It is indeed, especially when all the pieces haven?t fallen into place just yet.

Why Apple Needs to Refocus Its Energy

Friday, January 11th, 2013
By George Leong, B.Comm. for Profit Confidential

Needs to Refocus Its EnergyThe share price of Apple Inc. (NASDAQ/AAPL) has been on a steady decline since trading at $705.07 on September 21, 2012. There are questions swirling around regarding the ability of Apple CEO Timothy Cook to deliver the superlative revenue growth traders have been accustomed to in the past. But with the rise of Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and ?Android?-based phones and tablets, the competitive environment has tightened; Apple will need a ?Plan B,? according to my stock analysis.

The declining revenue growth is an indication that Apple may be in trouble. According to analysts polled by Thomson Financial, Apple is estimated to grow its revenues by 22.2% in fiscal 2013 and fall to a mere 15.1% in fiscal 2014. My stock analysis shows that these are not growth metrics investors are paying for; rather, they pale in comparison to the 70.0% and 80.0% growth seen in 2011. The same goes for the chipmakers that need to shift their focus to the mobile market. (Read ?Why Chipmakers Need to Focus on the Mobile Market.?)

My stock analysis suggests that Apple needs to do something other than just launching new ?iPhones? and ?iPads? to drive revenue growth. CEO Cook has visited China on numerous occasions?and trust me; he is not there to visit the Great Wall or Tiananmen Square. With about a billion mobile phones in the country, my stock analysis suggests that Apple wants a piece of the action, and the company realizes that selling $600.00 iPhones won?t cut it. Heck, even a $300.00 iPhone would likely be too high for the masses, based on my stock analysis. Of course, this is if Cook wants to dominate the Chinese market, which I believe he does, based on my stock analysis.

Now there is speculation that Apple is developing a cheaper iPhone to be launched later in the year, according to the Wall Street Journal. (Source: ?Apple Said to Develop Cheaper IPhone Model for Late 2013,? Bloomberg Businessweek,January 9, 2013.) If true, my stock analysis says that this strategy would make sense, as Apple needs to sell much cheaper phones in the emerging economies, and then hope that these buyers eventually upgrade to the company?s more expensive products.

Samsung and Nokia Corporation are already selling cheaper smartphones in China, so my stock analysis shows that it?s not rocket science to surmise that Apple would follow suit. The problem I see is the price point for the cheaper iPhones. According to my stock analysis, the cheaper iPhone would need to have a major haircut in price. Of course, Apple also needs to consider the margins for the selling price. Too low and margin erosion occurs; too high, and no one buys it.

What I sense is that Apple will likely do venture deals with China?s major mobile operators and try to sell the phones in a way similar to what we see in the U.S. If a customer opts in for a two- or three-year plan, the price of the phone falls, and Apple makes money on recurring revenues.

The bottom line is: Apple needs to do something new to drive new streams of revenues and help foster growth towards what it used to be.

Huawei Blames 'Lack of Innovation' on Loss of Steve Jobs

Firm's consumer CEO also criticizes Samsung's material.

During the Consumer Electronics Show, Huawei consumer CEO Richard Yu blamed the supposed "lack of innovation" in the technology market due to the death of late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs.

"Steve Jobs is gone. Now there is a lack of innovation," he said. Jobs was seen by many as one of the few worthy of being a visionary, with the late Apple co-founder helping the firm become the most valuable company on the planet via the launches of the iPod, iPhone and iPad.

Yu also criticized South Korean technology giant Samsung, stating that it doesn't utilize high-end materials: "their plastic is cheap".

He then referred to why Chinese smartphone manufacturer Huawei is the best company in terms of design for two reasons. One being it mixes Asian and European design and the other being it has spirit. "We're a globalized company, so that's why we can do better. And behind all that, we have our spirit. It's very important."

"In the past people understood that the best products came from Apple or Samsung. We want to change this so that people understand that the best products come from Huawei. That's my target."

Due to the firm's history of building lower-end handsets, Yu acknowledged that it'll take time for U.S. carriers to accept its high-end devices. Huawei announced the 6.1-inch Ascend Mate phablet during CES, which it claims to have the world's largest phone screen, as well as the world's most powerful smartphone in the form of the Ascend D2. It also announced its first Windows Phone with the W1.

Responding to comments regarding the sheer size of the Ascend Mate smartphone, as echoed in our hands-on CES 2013 preview, Yu stressed that the device was "more comfortable than the Galaxy Note" due to its design, as well as one-handed mode available for the device's keyboard.

Bombings kill 115 people in Pakistan

(AP) ? A series of bombings in different parts of Pakistan killed 115 people on Thursday, including 81 who died in a sectarian attack on a bustling billiard hall in the southwest city of Quetta, officials said.

The blasts punctuated one of the deadliest days in recent years in Pakistan, where the government faces a bloody insurgency by Taliban militants in the northwest and Baluch militants in the southwest.

The country is also home to many enemies of the U.S. that Washington has frequently targeted with drone attacks. A U.S. missile strike Thursday killed five suspected militants in the seventh such attack in two weeks, Pakistani intelligence officials said.

The billiard hall in Quetta, the capital of Baluchistan province, was hit by twin blasts about 5 minutes apart on Thursday night, killing 81 people and wounding more than 120 others, said senior police officer Zubair Mehmood.

The billiard hall was located in an area dominated by Shiite Muslims, and most of the dead and wounded were from the minority sect, said another police officer, Mohammed Murtaza. Many of the people who rushed to the scene after the first blast and were hit by the second bomb, which caused the roof of the building to collapse, he said.

Police officers, journalists and rescue workers who responded to the initial explosion were also among the dead, police said.

The sectarian militant group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi claimed responsibility for the attack to local journalists. One of the group's spokesmen, Bakar Saddiq, said the first blast was carried out by a suicide bomber and the second was a bomb planted in a car and detonated by remote control.

Radical Sunnis groups often target Pakistan's Shiite minority, whom they believe hold heretical views and are not true Muslims.

Earlier in the day, a bomb targeting paramilitary soldiers in a commercial area in Quetta killed 12 people and wounded more than 40 others, said Shakeel, the senior police officer.

The United Baluch Army, a separatist group, claimed responsibility for the attack on the soldiers in calls to local journalists.

Elsewhere in Pakistan, a bomb in a crowded Sunni mosque in the northwest city of Mingora killed 22 people and wounded more than 70, said senior police officer Akhtar Hayyat.

No group claimed responsibility for the attack.

On Narcissism | Man Repeller

I?ll be honest, when I read Gawker?s ?Journalism is not Narcissism? last week, I tellingly thought it was a direct attack at me. The piece addressed an apparent flaw in how the American collegiate system teaches journalism. I am American, I went to college, and I was effectively taught how to become a journalist. But am I one? No. And why? Because I?d rather talk about me.

I?d originally seen the article because a former college professor of mine (he taught Criticism at The New School) posted it to his Facebook wall, teased with a line that read, ?if you?ve been a student of mine, tattoo this to your ass.? Was that, too, a personal attack at me? Irony smacked me with a frying pan when I began reading and noticed another former college professor of mine (she taught Writing for Publication at The New School) was quoted in the article (for the sake of contention) waxing such controversial poetic as: ?You have to grab the reader by the throat immediately, which is why I launched my second memoir with the line ?In December my husband stopped screwing me.?? I had gotten an A in her class and now I had to wonder if that?s where I?d began fucking up.

Gawker isn?t wrong. The ability to anchor a good story and simultaneously possess the gift to share that story with tender, beautiful words is almost as true a rarity as a live seal reading The New Yorker over coffee at The Bowery Hotel. This is where the journalist, with his/her literary skill comes in: to season and finish preparing that already-cooked-but-not-quite-there-yet, meat.

The quoted professor isn?t wrong either?proven by a statistic offered in this week?s New York Magazine clocking in the number of Self Help books available for purchase at over 35,000. Where there?s that much supply, there?s obviously hearty demand, and when the demand in question all but speaks to the nature of our unanimously unilateral narcissistic demeanor (the writer is writing about him/herself, the reader is hoping to learn something about him/herself), we?ve got to wonder where we?re heading.

Subsisting in a world that is macroscopically catered to appease our independent selves is getting tiring. In reflecting on the epic re-branding of Apple Inc., it?s obvious that iPods, iMacs, iPhones, and iPads have changed the way in which we interact with technology, and due to the oneness factor, ourselves. With the growing popularity of consumption by way of tailored-to-self subscription, it is near impossible to step away from our newly-forged communi-me?s. At WWD?s CEO Summit earlier this week, Karl Lagerfeld noted that he has more couture clients now than he did 20 years ago. Isn?t that telling? Who needs ready-to-wear when we can have ready-for-me? Finally, with the inevitability that we have all become our own brands because of social media, have also become obsessed with preserving ourselves. In 2013, we?re not really Generation Y anymore; we?ve become Generation I.

And if I know one thing about the collective us, it is that we?re obsessed with achieving happiness. I blame self-help. Reading true, naked tales of combat, defeat and a sweeping lesson learned from the devil?s mouth is honest, raw, and touching. It also incites feelings of inadequacy though. How can the writer arrive at this this wildly fulfilling life, while, we, the reader, recoil at the thought of it?

Yesterday, I asked my younger brother if he thinks true, euphoric happiness is a real place. Admittedly, I?d began thinking that there are fleeting moments of happiness on a journey, yes, but that there?s no real destination. (I think I?m getting my period). He had a different idea. ?Of course happiness is a real place, and the key to it is being happy.? Eureka! It?s a simple sentiment that when unpacked explains what we all know: state of mind is state of self, and what we feel, how we feel it, what we do with it is wholly in our control. This in turn really makes me wonder: if we?ve become so narcissistic, so obsessed with maintaining, bettering, becoming ourselves, why are we trying to achieve happiness instead of just be it? Conclusively, I want to say that we?ve got the power but that just might be the narcissism talking.

Salaried worker on FMLA: How to pay half days? ? Business ...

Q. We have a salaried employee who needs to take FMLA leave. Some days off will be full days, so they would be unpaid (unless she has vacation or personal time). But how do we pay for the intermittent days on which she only takes a half day off?? ? Mary, Nebraska

A. Salaried employees are generally entitled to a full day?s pay for any work they perform that day, pursuant to the Fair Labor Standards Act?s salary pay requirement. How??ever, the FMLA provides an exception to that rule. If your em??ployee works half a day, the other half-day taken for FMLA leave can be unpaid, assuming she chooses not to use any vacation or personal time to make up the shortfall in pay.
