Rock legends take to New York stage for storm Sandy victims

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band opened an all-star benefit concert for victims of Superstorm Sandy on Wednesday, in what producers promised was "the greatest line-up of legends ever assembled on a stage."

The "12-12-12" concert at New York's Madison Square Garden features a who's who of rock and pop, including The Rolling Stones, Alicia Keys, Chris Martin, Billy Joel, Eric Clapton, Kanye West and Bon Jovi.

"How do I begin again? My city's in ruins?" Springsteen sang. He was joined by Jon Bon Jovi for "Born to Run," ushering in what was to be a night of musical duets.

Next up, Roger Waters performed alongside Eddie Vedder, and later in the evening Paul McCartney was due to jam with Dave Grohl.

Comedian Adam Sandler took the stage for a Sandy-themed spoof on Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah," rhyming the title with "Sandy, Screw Ya!"

Backstage, actress Susan Sarandon recounted losing power in her New York home but said that was a small hardship compared to the real victims who lost their homes.

Steven Van Zandt, guitarist of the E Street Band, scolded "the oil companies" and "Wall Street guys" for not doing more to help.

"Even with the music business not what it used to be... we are proud to be here," he said.

Producer John Sykes said Waters, McCartney and Chris Martin of Coldplay had reached out to "other legends to join them on stage and create once-in-a-lifetime moments."

Before the concert, Sykes said $32 million had already been raised from ticket sales and sponsorships. With the concert's potential to reach 2 billion people through broadcast and digital platforms, organizers are hoping to raise tens of millions more.

To help with the fundraising, celebrities such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Kristen Stewart, Jake Gyllenhaal, Chelsea Clinton and Billy Crystal are taking part in a telethon during the concert, which is expected to last between four and five hours.

It is being broadcast live on television, radio, movie theaters, on Facebook and iHeartRadio, and streamed on digital billboards in New York's Times Square, London and Paris.

More than 130 people were killed when Sandy pummeled the East Coast of the United States in October. Thousands more were left homeless as the storm tore through areas of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, causing billions of dollars in damage.

Sykes said personal stories of neighborhoods and people severely affected by Sandy will be showcased during the concert.

Sykes was also involved with "The Concert for New York City" after the September 11, 2001, attacks, which raised more than $30 million for charity.

He said technological advances over the past decade have exponentially changed the reach of fundraising.

"We have both traditional and new media behind us in a way that we've never had before, and that is really going to be the 'x-factor' on how much money we can raise for the victims."

Donations raised from the one-night concert produced by Clear Channel Entertainment and The Weinstein Company, will go to the Robin Hood Relief Fund, which will provide money and materials to groups helping people hardest hit by the storm.

Should Engineers Pay Less for College Than English Majors ...

Should students majoring in engineering, science, health care or technology ? all fields in demand in the job market ? have to pay less for college than those majoring in history, philosophy, anthropology or English? The governor of Florida says he thinks so, at least at Florida?s 12 state universities.

Read an article about this proposal, then tell us how you feel about this idea. What do you plan to major in? Why?

In ?Florida May Reduce Tuition for Select Majors,? Lizette Alvarez writes:

Rick Scott, businessman turned politician, campaigned for governor in 2010 with promises to run Florida like a successful business ? more efficiency, lower costs, less hand-wringing and measurable results.

Now, looking for more value on the remaining dollars, Governor Scott and Republican lawmakers are prodding Florida?s 12 state universities to find ways to steer students toward majors that are in demand in the job market.

The message from Tallahassee could not be blunter: Give us engineers, scientists, health care specialists and technology experts. Do not worry so much about historians, philosophers, anthropologists and English majors.

To nudge students toward job-friendly degrees, the governor?s task force on higher education suggested recently that university tuition rates be frozen for three years for majors in ?strategic areas,? which would vary depending on supply and demand. An undergraduate student would pay less for a degree in engineering or biotechnology ? whose classes are among the most expensive for universities ? than for a degree in history or psychology. State financing, which has dropped drastically in the past five years, would be expected to make up the tuition gap.

Students: Tell us ?

  • Do you think a system like this would nudge students toward ?job-friendly? degrees in high-need areas like technology and science?
  • Do you think this system is fair? Do you think it is a good idea?
  • Do you think studying the humanities? the arts, English and history ? is worthwhile, even if those majors are not as in demand for jobs? Why or why not?
  • Do you agree with the governor that, during a time when generous state financing for higher education is no longer an option and jobs are scarce, universities need to be practical about the value of their degrees and evolve with the economy?
  • What do you plan to major in? Why? How ?job friendly? do you think that major is? What do you plan to do with it after college?

West Virginia Natural Gas Explosion - Business Insider

Reports are coming in of a big explosion in Sissonville, West Virginia (scroll down for photos and video).

Via local news outlet WSAZ:

The northbound lanes of Interstate 77 are closed in the Sissonville area, from Tuppers Creek to Pocatalico due to what's being called a major gas line explosion.

Kanawha County Commission President Kent Carper tells WSAZ.com crews were called to what was described as a major gas line explosion in Sissonville.

WSAZ says that right now, no injuries or fatalities have been reported. A "Shelter in Place" has been issued for buildings in the area, though.

The AP reports that according to state police, several structures are on fire.

West Virginia Metro News cites?Kanahwa County Commissioner Kent Carper:

"The flames are shooting 50, 75 to 100 feet. There's fire everywhere," said Carper reporting from the scene on 58-WCHS. "Gas company is on the scene working with emergency officials to get the gas shut off, then we'll assess if we have injuries or casualties. At this time it's a fairly chaotic scene."

...

"Several structures are involved. The fire is so hot it's like a blevy. It's caused houses to melt and burn way far away," he said. "Many structures are on fire in a large fire area stretching hundreds and hundreds of feet."

Now, WSAZ reports that the well has been capped.

The Charleston Gazette is reporting that the fire has been put out, and the search for casualties is underway:

Crews apparently extinguished the fire just before 2 p.m. but a large amount of fumes remain in the air, said Kanawha County Commission President Kent Carper.

Carper said paramedics and emergency responders are going into homes and apartments now to assess injuries or fatalities.

Bloomberg News (via the Bloomberg terminal) cites West Virginia officials confirming earlier reports, saying the gas line has been shut off, there are still no confirmed injuries or deaths, and a search is underway for victims.

Readers can also?follow along via a live audio feed?of Kanawha County's emergency services scanners.

Local news outlet WOWK posted this sobering video of the flames towering into the air:

Wreaths for graves of veterans delivered to Suffolk | WTKR.com ...

It was a special delivery in Suffolk on Wednesday afternoon as a tractor-trailer full of fresh wreaths arrived at a storage facility off Dill Road.

The wreaths shipped in from Maine will be placed on every grave the the Albert Horton Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk this Saturday.

?It?s just to show some honor and some respect to the veterans and their spouses,? explained Horton Wreath Society President John Tutunjian.

4,075 were purchased this year at a cost of roughly $36,000.

That?s a significant increase over previous years as more and more veterans are now buried at the Horton Cemetery.

?Probably next year we?ll run about 5,500 wreaths at least. So this is a continual year round project,? explained Horton Wreath Society Treasurer Becca Landick. ?We don?t stop just because this weekend?s event is going to be over. We collect all year long.?

?The number is increasing exponentially every year. We started off 5 years ago with around 1,200 wreaths,? explained Tutunjian.

On Thursday, the wreaths will be fluffed and prepared before being loaded onto a donated tractor-trailer.

That tractor-trailer will then be escorted by the Patriot Guard Riders Saturday morning into the Horton Veterans Cemetery where the wreaths will be placed on every grave site.

?You step back, you take a deep breath, and you thank God. You?re thankful for their service, you remember their service,? Landick said. ?You?ve honored their service and they are not forgotten.?

The Horton Wreath Society relies solely on donations to cover the costs of purchasing the wreaths.

Google60 simulates 'Mad Men' era punch card web searches, BYOB

Google60 shows 'Mad Men' era web searches, complete with punch cards, tape

If you've ever pondered what Google "web" searching would have been like in the 60s, the Google60 art project has got a pretty natty-looking response. Created by designer Norbert Landsteiner of Google BBS fame, it lets you enter your search term via punch cards of the era, then heads off to the tape archives for text, news or image results -- which it furiously outputs on a simulated typewriter-style printer. The project uses actual sounds from an IBM 129 keypunch and Teletype Model ASR 33, while paying homage to the classic IBM system 360 mainframe in the image above. So, hit the source, pour up a scotch and have a gas searching, man.

Deadly Oregon shopping mall shooting appeared to be random rampage

CLACKAMAS, Oregon (Reuters) - A masked gunman who opened fire in the food court of a crowded Oregon shopping mall, killing two people and wounding a third before taking his own life, appears to have acted alone in a blind rampage with no known motive, police said on Wednesday.

Investigators identified the man behind Tuesday afternoon's shooting as Jacob Tyler Roberts, 22, who they said had no significant criminal history and apparently acted without warning.

The weapon he used was described as an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle, which the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office said was stolen the day before the shooting from an unidentified acquaintance of the killer.

Roberts also was believed to be carrying several fully loaded ammunition magazines when he walked into the Clackamas Town Center in the Portland suburb of Happy Valley, and moved swiftly to a food court at the center of the mall to start shooting, authorities said. He was wearing a hockey-style mask at the time.

Two people were killed on the spot - Steven Mathew Forsyth, 45, of suburban West Linn, a father of two who owned a business in the mall, and Cindy Ann Yuille, 54, of Portland, according to Sheriff Craig Roberts.

Kristina Shevchenko, 15, was badly wounded but managed to stagger away from the food court to the lower level of the mall, where she was found. She was hospitalized in serious condition on Wednesday.

But carnage from the shooting likely was limited by the fact that the gun jammed, although the suspect managed to get the weapon working again before he moved downstairs and shot himself, the sheriff told a news conference.

Sheriff Roberts also said the casualty count was curtailed by the fact that the estimated 10,000 shoppers in the mall "kept a level head" for the most part in swiftly leaving the building, and helping each other in the process.

He credited police with rapidly swarming the mall and merchants with following emergency lockdown procedures that allowed many shoppers to quickly find shelter.

'WE DO NOT UNDERSTAND THE MOTIVE'

Authorities said they remained baffled about what led the suspect to open fire in the mall, the latest in a spate of U.S. gun violence incidents this year, most notably the killing of 12 people and wounding of 58 others at a midnight screening of the Batman film "The Dark Knight Rises" in Colorado in July.

"At this time, we do not understand the motive of this attack except to say there is no apparent connection between the suspect and his victims," the sheriff said.

Sergeant Adam Phillips, a spokesman for the sheriff's office, said investigators were not aware of any signs that Roberts was preparing to act as he did.

"Every indicator is that he acted solely alone in carrying out this heinous and tragic crime," he said.

Detectives contacted several members of the suspected gunman's family as they began their investigation but sheriff's officials said they had little if any immediate information about the gunman's personal background, employment history or education.

Phillips said Roberts was known to have once been a victim of a crime, but he did not elaborate, and it was not clear whether investigators believed that may have had any bearing on the shooting.

A photograph of Roberts displayed by police showed a young man with longish, straight black hair, a light mustache and goatee and ring-sized discs in each of his pierced earlobes.

High school student Hannah Baggs, 14, told the Oregonian newspaper that she got a close look at the gunman before he entered the mall and opened fire.

"He was, like, 10 feet away from us, wearing a white mask and carrying something heavy with both hands," Baggs said in a report on the newspaper's website. "He went running into the store."

Honeywell sees slow 2013, to buy Intermec for $600 million

(Reuters) - Diversified U.S. manufacturer Honeywell International Inc forecast a fiscal 2013 profit mostly below Wall Street's estimates on Monday as sales cool in the aerospace and transportation sectors.

The company, whose many industrial products include cockpit electronics and automotive turbochargers, also said it would buy mobile computing device maker Intermec for $600 million, or $10 per share.

The subdued forecast was not unexpected on Wall Street, where shares of Honeywell were down 0.2 percent to $61.86 in midday trading on Monday.

Chief Executive Officer Dave Cote, known for his strong views on the perils of the U.S. "fiscal cliff" of automatic tax increases and government spending cuts, did not mention it as a reason for the weaker-than-expected forecast in a statement on Monday morning.

Cote did not participate in a conference call with investors on Monday to discuss the deal and forecast.

The new forecast was released a week earlier than expected due to the Intermec deal, which gives Intermec shareholders a 25 percent premium from Friday's closing stock price.

Honeywell expects the deal to dent its 2013 earnings by 3 cents to 4 cents per share.

The company forecast a 2013 profit of $4.75 to $4.95 per share, excluding items, while analysts on average expect $4.95, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Honeywell said it expected revenue of $39.0 billion to $39.5 billion for 2013, which compares with analysts' expectations of $39.42 billion.

Intermec's scanning and mobile computer technology will help Honeywell offer products involving RFID (radio frequency identification), voice-directed applications, barcode and receipt printing.

The deal "really enables Honeywell to be a leader of rugged mobile computers and scanners in the AIDC (automatic identification and data capture) space," Honeywell Chief Financial Officer David Anderson said on the conference call with investors.

AIDC is a method to automatically collect and record data. A common example is a barcode.

Shares of Intermec rose 23 percent to $9.80.

Michigan passes anti-union measure amid protests

Alex Wagner and the NOW panel discuss the Michigan House's 58-51 passage of a "right to work bill," which is expected to be signed by Republican Gov. Rick Snyder.

By M. Alex Johnson, NBC News

Updated at 2:05 p.m. ET:?Michigan lawmakers gave final approval Tuesday to legislation that?would sharply limit labor rights, passing the first of two measures over the objections of thousands of people packing the Capitol in protest, some of whom chanted "Shame on you!" at lawmakers from the House gallery.

By a 58-51 vote, the Republican-led House passed a bill that would ban workplace rules that make union membership a condition of employment for government workers. It then approved a second bill, covering private-sector workers, by a vote of 58-52. After final parliamentary maneuvering, the bills will head to Gov. Rick Snyder, who said Tuesday that he would sign them.

The legislation would make Michigan ? one of the most union-friendly states in the country ? the 24th "right to work" state, making payment of union dues voluntary even though the union negotiates on a worker's behalf.

Snyder told NBC News' Andrea Mitchell that he was "pro-collective bargaining," but he said right-to-work laws denied workers freedom of choice.

"I think it's a good thing," he said of the legislation. "I think it's pro-worker."

As the vote was taking place, as many as 10,000 people descended on the Capitol, State Police estimated, prompting authorities to restrict access to the building because it was at its capacity of 2,000. The overflow filled the lawn and stretched down East Michigan Avenue to the Lansing Center across the river several blocks away.

About 200 onlookers filled the gallery overlooking the House floor Tuesday. As debate resumed on one of the bills, the session was interrupted with protesters yelling, "Shame on you," NBC News' Nadine Comerford reported.

Live developments on breakingnews.com

Law enforcement officials said they wouldn't let Michigan become another Wisconsin, where demonstrators occupied the state Capitol around the clock for nearly three weeks last year to protest similar legislation.

Armed with tear gas canisters, pepper spray and batons, State Police officers guarded the Capitol as protesters shouted "No justice, no peace!" and "Shut it down!" NBC station WILX of Lansing reported.?

State Police officials confirmed that one of their troopers used pepper spray on one protester. Police spokesmen said the man was sprayed when he grabbed a trooper and tried to pull her into the crowd.

The man wasn't arrested, but two other people were arrested after they tried to force their way into another building on the grounds where Snyder has offices, police said.?

On the lawn, four large inflatable rats were set up to mock Snyder, House Speaker Jase Bolger, Senate Republican leader Randy Richardville, and Dick DeVos, a prominent conservative businessman who union leaders say is behind the bills.

Obama decries right-to-work proposal during trip to Michigan

Schools in at least three districts were closed because so many teachers and other staff were at the rally.

"The long-term effect is this is union-busting at its best," Robyn Price, a union representative with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal employees, told NBC station WDIV of Detroit.

Valerie Constance, a developmental reading instructor for the Wayne County Community College District and a member of the American Federation of Teachers, sat on the Capitol steps with a sign shaped like a tombstone. It read: "Here lies democracy."

But Mark Mix, president of the National Right to Work Committee, hailed the votes, saying the made for "a great day for Michigan's workers and taxpayers,"

"I would like to congratulate Michigan's workers for their newly protected freedom to work without union affiliation as a condition of their employment," Mix said.
